I've read in serveral threads about maybe including some type
of system roll back utility for puppy! now there's something I
could really use I constantly break my poor puppy
(all operator malfunction!) and I foound this page on unionfs
and wondered if this method could be used in puppy for a
system rollback

Puppy itself is based on unionfs, so I would not try to use it for backups.
You simply might zip your pup001 or pup_save.3fs from time to time (or burn it to CD).
This is what I do before doing very risky operations.
You could boot from a live-CD to do it.
In Puppy2, you can start with the comandlineoption pfix=ram to boot without using the save-file.
Or create a second one (pup_save2.3fs), and you will be prompted at boot which one to use.
