4.3.1 without sound - but perfect otherwise

#1 Post by spongedaddy »

Hello all,

I have 4.3.1 installed (full HD, 643MB mem) on a Dell Dimension 4500 and am loving every second of it (this old machine is now the fastest one I own).

However, I still do not get any sound after running ALSA sound wizard. I've also made sure the AlsaMixer levels are unmuted and maxed, and yes, the speakers are plugged in.

Card is Intel 82801DB-ICH4.
Chip is Analog Devices AD1981A.

Here is some more info:

I've glanced at Patriot's thread on drivers and that looks promising. (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=51745)

Any suggestions for getting the sound going would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

sd

Thanks, Chris!

So installing Retrovol and then performing the steps in the referenced thread should help? All I have for a sound icon is the the basic one that normally comes with Puppy.

Regards,

Tom

Hi Chris,

I didn't have Retrovol in Multimedia so I went ahead and installed it.

I did what was explained in the thread you provided - still no joy.

Should have said >> zmixer.

Sometimes just by clicking on that in multimedia >>

it then activates the sound in Puppy 4.3.1

I have just booted this up to check it out.

And I had issues with Dell laptops next door..no sound.
So I've been there.

So try again.
Boot Puppy >> puppy pfix=ram >>>

for a clean test from cd.

Sorry 4 previous dumb dumb answer.

Chris.

Hello again all,

Just an update for anyone interested: :)

I've battled this sound issue for a while and am ready to give up. Fiddling with Alsa has provided no joy.

I've burned a copy of the retro 4.3.1 because (judging from another thread) that seems to provide sound for the ancient hardware I have and I may give that a try.

Any comments or last-ditch suggestions are appreciated.

Same Here

Hi, I have the same sound card chip, did you give up on this? I am about ready to, getting really frustrated with Puppy. I had same problem with Wary NOP 511, loses sound every reboot. Those were both on same computer. I have similar problem on a laptop, totally different sound card.
I am just about ready to give up on Puppy completely, as much as I love it, due to these types of issues. They don't seem to occur on other Linux distros, just Puppy. Thanks, Rob

Just for the heck of it, can you open menu-multimedia-alsamixer and then use menu-graphics-MPaint- snapshot-screen-capture to take a snapshot of your alsamixer window?
Use the mouse to make a box around the alsamixer window and then select Image - Crop to get the selection. Save it and attach it to a post here so we can see your settings for maybe making a further suggestion.
Some sound cards do not have built in amplification and need to have PCM turned up and also if you have a vertical bar labeled Speaker, make sure it is cranked up also.

If you run Hardinfo, and select PCI or Modules, does it show anything sound related?

I will try this either tonight or tomorrow. Problem is that alsa mixer just shows rocketfish webcam after reboot. Then you run alsa wizard again, and it shows actual sound card. It just seems to lose the save file for alsa. I have tried suggestions I have found, but I will post screenshots of what is going on. Thanks again, Rob

oligin10, 8-bit, spongedaddy,
I am working on some ALSA problems with lucid pup 5.2.8. Any ALSA fixes to it eventually get propagated back to 4.3.1 (as "4.3.1.1"). Are you using either of those puppies? I am addressing issues with the alsawizard primarily but cannot help with the mixers. Does wary 5.1.4.1 work for you with the sound card?

If any of you care to work with me to see how far we can get with the old sound card, I would be pleased to have you join us.

I have Puppy 431 SCSI that was a test release by Barry and got pulled never to be seen again. It was called "pup-431-scsi-intel_modems.iso".
I do not have any problems with my sound card, I was just chiming in to see if I could help out.
I have a Toshiba Satellite though that I had sound problems with until I realized it had a Speaker bar in alsamixer that was set to zero.
I cranked up the value on it and I then could hear sound from my laptop.

*SOLVED*

#14 Post by oligin10 »

Just figured it out today, after you posted reply. I got thinking, why have I had so many problems with installations on sound when I haven't had problems in past, except with Puppy. This is not a fix for my laptop, which I haven't solved, but for a desktop, which I now have. Problem is Rocketfish Webcam. Alsa seems to only see it on reboot. I disconnected webcam and rebooted, sound persistent. Not sure why this solves it, but it does. Webcam is not going with this desktop, which I am building to give to someone less fortunate. But that fixes problem for this desktop. Now if I can get rest of software to install without any more glitches. Thanks for your reply, got me thinking what else am I missing. After checking alsa mixer output, that's when I realized it was seeing webcam instead of soundcard. Thanks again for your help, Rob
P.S. Thanks Rerwin, I have done full install of NOP 431 on this desktop, which was having the problem. Other computer is a Sony Vaio laptop running TEENpup Mini 2010. It has a similar problem, not exactly the same. It may last for a while, then just stops working. After running alsa wizard, sound is back fine. Problem may be related to improper shutdown. Tried John Biles fix for Legacy OS, but it did not help. TEENpup is based on 4.20. Thanks, Rob

That release is still available, just under "special puppies":
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pup ... modems.isoI recommend it for anyone making a "complete" puppy with my packages in my "4.3.1.1" project. It includes a special version of remasterpup2 so that a user can collect all desired update packages and the remaster immediately.

I tend to differ with you as the kernel used in the version I have is 2.6.30.5.
The version you show was made about the same time and was for "older?" PCs.
Also, it was made with the intention of trying to make Puppy able to boot from a SCSI device.
One of the testers at that time reported he was unable to boot it from a SCSI drive and that version was dropped.

This is as I remember it. Barry would know more and after the theft a while back of some of his data, I am unsure if he still has it.

I didn't notice the old kernel in the name. I'll be darned. I have been using the 2.6.30.5 version since the beginning and assumed it was still available. I used it because it had all of the modem drivers. That's disappointing. I will need to update my 4.3.1.1 thread to account for that. I have it on several CDs that I call "puppy Linux 4.3.1 Complete", but am unsure whether I still have the iso file somewhere.

EDIT: I just now checked "special puppies" and see that it still contains the "complete" iso:
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pup ... modems.iso

Is that the one you have?

I will do some more checking.
Also, Mine in highly modified with every fix I could find and also updated browser.
