Slacko B5

#1 Post by 01micko »

it's time...

Slacko

Slacko B5 124M

checksum <-- 8072c1a5e3c40c5b058b9b8bc90496b0 slacko-4.99.7.iso

NO devx.. use the B4 one, it's almost identical.. I have to update the boost libs for abiword.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

News...

Slacko B5++ (111M) is released.. k2.6.39.4-PAE (HiMem.. don't bother on older kit please, say 6-7yrs+), xz compression, hence smaller, same woof build as Slacko B5, so has the same features(bugs)...also extra scsi, boot enabled, broadcom, firmware.

Devx 105M

kernel sources (95M).. needed (+devx) for 3rd part drivers.. (nvidia, ati, prop wireless etc)

checksums

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Changes this issue:
docx and opendocument plugins working in abiword
changes and updates to slickpet 1.3.3
added psip32r to front page, removed Pwidgets
new flow for first boot, gettext'd, feeble Spanish (me), Russian, rodin.s
update Pmusic-2.1.4 -zigbert
update Pburn-3.4.0 " "
update ffmpeg-8.4
add ffmpeg-8.4-i486 to repo
nouveau is near nvidia drivers in repo, note in drivers tab, slickpet
mesa grabbed directly, removed xorg_high references
removed broadcom firmware
latest shutdownconfig with locales, rodin.s, L18l
update sfs_load-1.2 -shinobar
shutdown bug, cause is now known, reported to Barry.
-unmount ALL drives/filesystems before shutting down.
new rockstar gtk theme and DGmod jwm theme (me)
Tulliana icons (battleshooter)
added standalone smplayer and umplayer to PPM
added abiword deps rasqal,raptor,redmond ( )
updated cups_shell -rcrsn51
revised small screen fixes (me).. more to do
added growl (network menu) Lobster<-- the primo developer (new tin hat icon)
updated DeskSetup-0.6
updated gtkdialog-0.8.0 stable release, this will be in final (no gtkdialog3 in slacko)

other stuff I forget
Notes

I thought I had the shutdown bug.. slipped through.. it seems unmounting isn't finished before poweroff.. please, if you had the bug check drives for integrity. (fsck /dev/whatever-drive be sure it's UNMOUNTED before check. For Windows drives, boot Windows and use chkdsk or whatever it is). As a work around for now unmount drives before poweroff.

Pmusic is looking real nice! Works well for me. Pburn crashes no more. Abiword is actually useful! (Who'd've thought?) I'm still not sold on it though, but if you desperately need to see that docx or odt buried in your crashed windows then it should suffice.

The theme.. you'll either love it or hate it! I think it's co-ordinted, semi-professional and above all fun. :) . A few clicks and it can be anything you want anyway. There are plently of alternate gtk themes in the common and slacko repos and other jwm themes, and icon themes. We all know we can get wallpapers from anywhere and install with a right click don't we?

OK, have fun :)

(I'll be away for some days as of tomorrow.. recharge the batteries before the final assault  )

B5 on Athlon64

#7 Post by Volhout »

Frugal install Slacko B5 on USB stick (with Universal Installer).

- audio and video work Xorg (1368x768 on setting 1366x768)
- flash player installed correct
- still have the problem with the doc file on abiword. They are text boxes. The font used is Ariel. That could be the problem.

Observation:

When universal (pendrive) installer select "Lucid" to make USB stick with Slacko B5, then shutdown Slacko = reboot.
When usinversal installer select "Wary" to make USB stick with Slacko B5 then shutdown works correct.

Unmounting of drives doe not show on desktop icons at shutdown.

Enjoy your time off Micko01. You desrve the rest after this marathon. And it will give us time to throughly test Slacko.

Great, mick!
Here's a curious one:
Some while ago, updating a FULL would leave the old GRUB intact, generally only requiring the title line to be edited. Recently the MBR & GRUB seems to be completely stripped during an update (upgrade? whatever) which tends to conflict with the verbiage along the lines of "..if no GRUB exists...etc, etc...." suggesting that it is the intention to leave any old GRUB untouched? Not necessarily a disaster, but requires extra effort(!) and if one forgets to re-install after upgrading, leaves an un-bootable HD. Will duplicate this comment on BK's blog.

PS. Would be helpful if 'woof woof' could be re-run after an initial install, an upgrade, and, for HW testing especially, whenever HD is swapped into a different chassis ie booting invokes changed HW. The latter may be more difficult to code?

re. browser comments in B4 - finally got Midori running in B5 and it's g-o-o-d. Had long list of deps. to install - loaded the lot, and some, in blind ignorance. No idea which ones were crucial/critical. Recommend more enlightened guru inspect this one and offer more considered procedure.

PS. One of the retrovol sound options got left unticked in default settings leaving it muted - at least that happened after update.

Link problem resolved in NoteCase Pro version 3.4.8; Ubuntu 11.04 build deb downloaded from http://www.notecasepro.com/. Libs are now all included, as is the correct menu files. Just click on the deb to install. All the features appear to be working without registering.

Micko,

relaxing is not very efficient if you keep posting on the forum ....

Take a beer, sit on the veranda, view a movie, anything but linux....

Manual frugal install of B5 on Dell Inspiron 1100. Booted to desktop, no issues
What worked OTB:
  • Brookdale mod
    Flynclient mod (synaptics touchpad here)
    Sound
    Volume setter icon in tray
    Frisbee
    Mplayer with mp4 file
    Shutdown highlighting
What didn't:
  • time setter, seem to GMT-5 regardless of choice - tried a selection;however,
/etc/localtime points to the selcted zone, but the arithmetic does't happen
occasional black screen on reboot, especially, it seems, when hot...
another brooky problem on all??? newer kernels, xorgs, ... not to worry
Liked rockstar more than I expected! ... I'm no longer close to being young

Enjoy the time off, start soon :D

The shutdown problem was that only affecting full installs?

Is B5 then better than B4 or should one go back to B3 or B2 or what.

Sorry I fail to follow all the things happening.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though
