other stuff I forget
Notes

jpeps reports a serious issue with RAM usage and cache (OP, follow from there). This needs to be isolated, addressed or a kernel recompile will be needed. Anyone with a similar problem please report.[SOLVED]

Pburn is seeming ok to me. There are reports of X crashes at the end of burning. Reports please.[still intermittent X crashing]

Frisbee is no longer a pain! It's better than ever, even connects fine in my shed on my Brooky 'r' us (20M from router through several external walls).

Heaps of stuff has been updated and is testing stable.. maybe a bit of polish and next we are RC??? Maybe one more woof.. [ ]

First boot should flow fairly smoothly as does shutdown, all in gui, all brand new, please report your experience.

Translators

Please consider updating Slickpet translations, there will only be one more change, Seamonkey will be out, yet to be decided the replacement.. opinions? TOR or dillo? (I'm with dillo, but my vote is null){OPINIONS PLEASE :) }

Also, the 2 new gui, /usr/sbin/firstrun.sh and /usr/sbin/flsynclient-wrapper need some simple translations. No DOTpot files as yet, but as said, they are extremely simple.

We need lang packs for the repo that can be auto accessed by first-run (shino).. anyone interested???

Compilers/Developers

More stuff is needed/wanted. Feel free to offer any proggy you want. If you don't have upload space go to datafilehost or PM smokey01, russoodle, Saturn or MU. Must be compiled in Slacko B4 or later.

Testers

I read every single character you type. Your time is important to me as I hope mine is to you. Try to keep reports as accurate as possible, include reproducible conditions, report anything unusual.

-

The business end is here.

Well, I've already got Slacko, so I know what time it is... Beer O'clock!

Cheers :)

You should be able to build an EXACT copy of this version from woof with these instructions and files

Download Packages-puppy-slacko-official.gz and gunzip in your woof tree

Download DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS-slackware-13.37.gz and gunzip in your woof tree

Download woof_base_hack.gz and gunzip in your woof tree support/slacko and ensure it's set executable

Run woof, at the second last tab, set erase scsi, erase big modems, in the last tab do not check simple file names.

Run 3builddistro and accept all the defaults (enter)

The rest is automatic until you get to the themes popup, choose 23oz gtk, haiku icons, apuppyfloydian wallpaper, puppeee-blue jwm theme.

Then let woof run til you get to the modesetting questions, accept the defaults, then reject thunar, y to patch video-upgrade, z for ziggy ppm gui, y for slacko custom themes.

build your sfs, iso burn if you want.. building the devx is broken..it builds but the devx is broke, we have a frankenstein devx

All packages should be up at ibiblio.

Have fun!

Many thanks
New shutdown (from desktop) e x c e l l e n t :)
New 4GB save file option [Lobster faints] 8)

Tried to install later xorg with mesa but b4 did not find it on server
- this was a 'setup extra video drivers' option whose location seems to have misplaced me

New theme - nice (I changed it and the background but . . . have to tinker)

Very impressed. This really is a major advance for Puppy. 8)

Just enjoying a beverage in my shed on the "brookys 'r' us" box (inadvertantly left running for 4 days on a USB install with B4 pre release  ), listening to some music (Pmusic-2.1.1 is awesome :D ) , uptime now about 3 hrs, Frisbee is fine.. ha!

EDIT: Time flies when you're having fun..

Code: Select all

USB printing works fine. And now that libusb-1.0 is in play, Canon scanners finally work OOTB without a separate driver install.

Testing Slacko 996.
bad news :
1) Sound : same problem as B3 tray slider is bad (GnomePlayer with Alsa is good and tray slidder also)
2) no power off => reboot only in spite of 'sleep 2'

Bata-4

#7 Post by sszindian »

Bata-4:

First run... Select PROBE from menu for screen resolution... select 1440x900... screen comes up with 1024x1024 size, Hmmm... try to change it but 1440x900 isn't listed as available after the welcome-message so try 1024x7xx (forgot what the xx is) it now offers and that makes bigger icons and text on the screen but... everything is still slightly 'oval-shaped' as it was in Bata-2 and, the text while online is still very 'fuzzy' I posted back your request for my graphic card, model, etc., back in bata-2, (page 3 or 4) as you requested, but it appears (if there is a driver available for my card in Bata-4) it isn't working??? Anyway, no other version of a Puppy gives me this problem (Latest-Wary, Luci-529), Squeeze-4.99-2, any other Dpup's)

Pretty hard to test anything here with the fuzzy-text and bad resolution, sorry about that !!!!

Hello :)!

Brookdale rev3 is behaving nicely with B4 :) :).

Manual frugal installation:
Just noting a new feature; the partition from which slacko was booted stays mounted (while still in pupmode 5). No ill-effects seen from manually un-mounting it, though. I only mention this because it's a new phenomenon - could indicate a script-bug has crept in somwhere, or could very well be a perfectly benign woof-script change.

More testing tonight ... :)/ MHHP

I guess Mick knows what you talk about. How can I and others see if we have same problem.

When is sound a problem for you?
What exactly are you doing when you shut down and it fails?
I install it now and will be able to write here again within 30 minutes
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Very Impressive on an old comcrap presario p3 i use for testing pups.
Frugal install 1 gb save file & i really liked the gui for save file running on desktop instead of usual way.

Was wondering would it be possible to tweak that to offer no save at every shutdown? I have seen some scripts on the forum for such things but ive only failed at tryin lol. Just an idea as it seems it works well with making the initial save file :)

jpeps reports a serious issue with RAM usage and cache (OP, follow from there)

okay I take a look at ram usage then.
Having not rebooted so no pupsave going which maybe have less cache then??? only on tab in SM this one I write on now.

100MB out of 1000MB RAM CPU usage change from 8% to at most 30% going round the different progs that want to test things.

Where does he looks for this one
I'm currious about how slacko uses cache. There seems to be a wide variation, even on a fresh boot. Here's two consecutive boots:
Code:

Mem: 1014724K used, 19788K free, 0K shrd, 19496K buff, 908328K cached
Mem: 222108K used, 812404K free, 0K shrd, 28940K buff, 132512K cached
Ah now I see it.
Mem 466MB 558MB free 58MB Buff 303MB Cached

Mem 255MB 769MB free 99MB Buff 113 Cached
I guess it was the music that I've tested on youtube that made up that extra in the chache? Mem usage in htop
now 80 out of 1000 after a reboot with a pupsave file.

Frugal install of B4. Ran into some Brookdale effects, but found out why; the word “Brookdale" does not appear in my tmp/ddcprobe.txt (first few lines shown below) to trigger the fix. It does appear in the output of lspci, only place I know of.

Code: Select all

# cat /tmp/ddcprobe.txt
vbe: VESA 3.0 detected.
oem: Intel(r)845G/845GL/845GE/845GV Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS
vendor: Intel Corporation
product: Intel(r)845G/845GL/845GE/845GV Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0
memory: 8000kb
So, I ran BROOKDALE manually; no more kaleidoscopes and X does restart. :D Good move, MHHP and 01micko. Have yet to determine if black screens appear sometimes on reboot; that’s a tough nut to crack.

Frisbee is working flawlessly and reconnects on reboot. It even reconnected automatically on a rare-for-me drop out.

flsynclient-wrapper also works! The action might be clearer if the “Is your touchpad Ok?

no. Alt+left mouse moves it but still cant see the last lines of text. Doesnt scroll. Doesnt resize.
