Sub_title: "Wary on steroids", feedback invited

See my blog post:

http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02481

Apart from the comments that I made in the blog post, if anyone would like to do general testing of Racy, I welcome the feedback.

Racy is 95% Wary packages, except for Xorg 7.6, Mesa, and more recent kernel (2.6.39.4). I would like to know if any of the PETs out of the wary repo don't work with Racy.

Note, there will also be a Wary 5.1.99 upload, announced soon. You will be able to install the Xorg 7.6 Mega Package in Wary.

The difference with Racy is that it goes one extra step with recent kernel.

UPDATE: Racy 5.1.101 (5.2 beta1) released

This is the hardware I tested on
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=563541#563541

Booted, configured and web enabled without incident.
Did a graphic card update but could not play an avi vid in double size or full screen.
Liked Stark interface - 50's retro look . . . Smile

This upgraded PSIP Puppy Phone should work OK
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=562383#562383

The PPM locked up on me.

- I got a BSOD when rebooting - I had changed the boot DVD
and it may have need to call something - should not though . . .

Hi Barry,

this is great - thanks for Racy Puppy!

Got today a used DELL Optiplex GX620, booting and running now Racy.
Used GParted for 50/30/1GB partitions (ext3/swap). Tried installing
and got always SANITY CHECK that wants to unmount partitions.

No one is mounted. Uuups (?)

Wary with Xorg 7.6... yeah!

Racy Wary automatically detects the internet (eth0 interface) and the Radeon (radeon) video driver.

If I try to exit to a prompt, the computer freezes up completely and have to do a hard reset. I then can't get a chance to create a pup_save file, because the same thing happens on trying to reboot.

The xorg.conf file confirms that the radeon driver is in use, but there is also a second 'Device' section where the vesa driver is listed. That seems a bit strange.

I'll have a go with the due-to-arrive Wary with the earlier kernel and the earlier Xorg version. I suspect that video would be OK with this. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the hard work. It's running very fast on this hardware.

I had to use the kernel code "radeon.modeset=0" to allow me to get the save file created.

Running Wary 5.1.99 now

As I thought, the X problem causing the machine to freeze now doesn't happen on shutdown. The xorg.conf now has the radeon driver correctly listed in the Device section and no second Device section showing the vesa driver.

So this then seems like an problem with the 7.6 version in Racy.

Will explore further

PostPosted: Sat 17 Sep 2011, 14:36    Post_subject: keyboard/mouse issues +

This may not be a typical setup but I had a couple of issues with racy 5.1.99

First I tried to install it a virtual machine on the same virtual disk along Slacko-4.99.1 and Lupu-258, but the universal installer failed (sorry, I didn't look for possible causes), so I had to install it manually.

Then I modified Racy to work on OLPC laptops according to the automated process we published here

The XO-1 (Geode) worked fine. Very Happy

The XO-1.5 (VIA7) failed to detect keyboard and mouse/touchpad in X, but keyboard is fine in console.
For the XO-1.5, I compiled the chrome driver in Racy without problems and does not appear to be the source of the mouse/keyboard issue.

Xorg.log reports no issues other than that Synaptics can not be used and thus unloaded. However, this is also the case with the other puppies modified for the XO-1.5 and is not giving any problems.
Also there is nothing in Xorg.log or /tmp logs to suggest any problem with the keyboard but still it fails to be detected.
All the kernel modules needed appear to be loaded and there is nothing suspicious in /var/log/messages. It actually shows that keyboard and touchpad were detected OK.

So I really can not see where this is coming from Question
If you have any suggestions I would be happy to try them.

One thing that might be needed is the full udev. However, the only one in the wary repo is udev-136 and does not make any difference if included. But it is quite old and outdated. Would it be possible to compile a more recent full udev version for wary/racy? I believe 167 is the one used in T2.

Reboot creating save file and loading devx and kernel source sfs.
Reboot again increasing save file size.
Exit to prompt to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-280.13.run which compiles
without error but when finished x won't start.
The only way back to the desktop is to choose the vesa driver.

The menu item "Mplayer media player wouldn't execute from openbox. The mplayer.desktop file had this line: Exec=exec mplayershell. So i changed it to Exec=mplayershell, then it worked from menu.

I think it worked anyway out of the box in jwm.

Otherwise, performance of everything else is fine on a very old system.

Boots directly to X with profile #PuppyHardwareProfile=AMD_ATOMBIOSAUO
(this has been identified in Fatdog64-520 and Slacko discussions as a Vesa driver profile)

Resolution 1366x768 is working, but CTRL-ALT-BKSP or "Exit to Prompt" does not work (just gets blank screen).

Now about the mysterious crash in this machine, soon after successful boot to X (observed in other new Puppies): it looks like a network probing crash, as Racy works until the network wizard starts its probe (The other new Puppies automatically launch network detection after booting to X.) I have observed this consistent crash only in this laptop and only when using the new Xorg (ie, newer than Wary's Xorg).

ISpup (based on Quirky 120) as well as Wary do not crash in this machine, but they have no usable wifi drivers (ISpup based on Quirky 120 used Broadcom driver compiled by pemasu).

I did a simple test just to see if it booted okay.

Now with new kernel. Is the nosmp already included or does it need such in the boot code?

Everything just worked even flash was there from scratch.
It connected to internet by itself and gphics worked

But like some Dpup and Spup puppies it has the annoying thing
If one need big screen so one use an external screen then it
keep 1024 x 600 despite it is 1024 x 768 a the hard info list it.
So all pictures leave a big chunk under that is unused. 168 lines unused? So that is annoying.

Hm what pet could I test then

will read what the others have tested and edit here again if something special needs to be tested. PPM stuff you asked for.

I am using an Acer D250 10" screen Intel 945 chips. Atom N270

I tested Inkscape but had not used it before so I drown in all the details to learn but the prgram seems to work and no crashes or anything.

To lazy to test more random things. Tell me what to test?

What do you mean by "Did a graphic card update"?

I think you have nVidia card, so do you mean that you installed the commercial nVidia driver?

When PPM locked up, can you provide any details, at what point of the operation of it that happened?

By "locked up", you mean it just hanged? But everything else, apart from PPM still working?
