For example, if you log in with kdm as a user without permissions set, you won't get sound, but I don't know how you're logging in so I'm not sure where to start. :)

1) Desktop->desktop settings->WM switcher ... don't worked,KDE crashed at start
2) console start ... crashed

There is no way to enter the KDE4.

Problem is that Linux see onboard card and my Soundblaster card. Puppy Lucid is able to solve this problem, but KDE4 is solving this problem through disabling onboard sound through "mixer". I don't see that option in your Lucid KDE4,in other KDE4 distros it was in taskbar.
KDE have it's own engine for sound cards, that is the problem.
Every time I started KDE,it asks me to disable my SB card.

That's strange, did it crash only after installing the plasmaaddons?

There is another way of getting in, if you exit to prompt (menu->shutdown->exit to prompt) then type "kdm", you'll get the official KDE login screen. To log in as root though, you'll need to enable it in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. Look for the line "AllowRootLogin=false" and change it to "AllowRootLogin=true".

Ahh ok I see. I'm still new to KDE so there's still a lot of things I need learn. Could you try to get into KDE the kdm way and see how the soundblaster responds to that? I think that should get mixer into the taskbar. Another thing you might want to do is to install the kdemultimedia addon, it might enable more functionality. Thanks for sticking to this.

It seems that this KDE is in early alpha stage.
Tried,no use. Login and pass works, but when KDE started, suddenly I had to enter (again) login and pass...

Ahhh ok, I was wondering if that would happen. It seems to be KDE doesn't like your graphics card or drivers :\ Seems it's having difficulty drawing up the plasma desktop. Have you tried getting in on a clean pup save with no drivers installed? I know it's more work, so I guess it's up to you if you'd like to keep trying to figure out what's wrong. I'm still happy of course to help you try and work it out.

battleshooter wrote:Hey Diamond,

Glad you like it and thanks for the feedback. For desktop effects, I'm pretty sure you'll need the kdeplasma-addons package, (download it here) and have DRI running on your system. Try typing "glxinfo" in a console and look for "direct rendering:yes" near the top. If you haven't got DRI going, use "Quickpet->Drivers->Test Graphics Card" to figure out which driver you'll need to get DRI going.
Hello,it is me again. I installed again KDE,and sound is working, except that ATI driver is working but no desktop effects. I installed plasma addons. What should I do ?
Thanx!

2. My shortcuts don't work any more,I tried to add them again, but no use.

3. Bug - can't download and install plasma addon... When I try,KDE is showing an error.

Hey Diamond,

Very glad to hear you've got the desktop going again. Unfortunately though, I haven't got the desktop effects running myself, still need to do a bit of googling, it's still a work in progress. I'll let you know as soon as I figure it out.

In a matter of fact,I like KDE very much. And there is a bug in JWM,there is no keyboard layot...
So I am again with your KDE + Lucid 5.28 :D
Sometimes I have no sound, but everything is fine
I installed ATI drivers first,and then I entered in KDE,and so far,so good ... :)
KDE seems pretty fast especially when I am entering KDE.
And finally,my Photo card is showing pictures really fast... Just like in WI$dow$$
Great work,KDE buddies :D
And great work to you too my friend!
I have one question, how to install downloaded .pet packages without entering JWM ? Through Delphin is not working. Thank you very much for your patience.

battleshooter wrote: By uncommenting

Code: Select all

HaltCmd=
and

Code: Select all

RebootCmd=
and setting their values to /sbin/poweroff and /sbin/reboot respectively, this seems to sort out the shutdown issue.

I was initially looking there, but I didn't realize they required the whole path to work out. I just need to do a bit more testing to see if it's dependent on any of the other tweaks I tried before this one, but I doubt it.
Am I wrong ? My kdm file looks like this

The command (subject to word splitting) to run to halt the system.
# Default is "/sbin/poweroff"
HaltCmd=
# The command (subject to word splitting) to run to reboot the system.
# Default is "/sbin/reboot"
RebootCmd=
# Whether it is allowed to shut down the system via the global command socket.
# Default is false
#AllowFifo=true

Not restarting... still

Close, but it should look like this:

The command (subject to word splitting) to run to halt the system.
# Default is "/sbin/poweroff"
HaltCmd=/sbin/poweroff
# The command (subject to word splitting) to run to reboot the system.
# Default is "/sbin/reboot"
RebootCmd=/sbin/poweroff

The part to change is highlighted in red.

To get Dolphin to install pets, click on a pet and when the "Open with" dialog pops up, type "petget" into it, and tick the "Remember application association for this type of file" box.

That should get it to go :)
Thank you very much for your patience.
I'm glad to help :)

Hey Adagio,

I just discovered the kdmrc shutdown tweak only works if you log into KDE4 with kdm. :\ Sorry about that. Were you getting on to KDE4 with kdm?

It seems that KDE is falling apart. First, shortcut icons don't work.. There is no chance for new shortcut to put to desktop...
Second, there is few errors that I get on startup

"Ah yeah, the permissions, hope that works out for you, that's where things got messy for me. K3B would install, but I couldn't actually get it to burn. "

you should run it from terminal and see what error messages there

Hi,

I'm not starting with KDM.
I'm also not spending much time on this atm, as other things have priority.

Have installed kdemultimedia hoping to get konq addons going, but not yet.

k3b permissions are on hold till I get my new drive in a couple of days,
The old one is buggered. :)

Little-by-little. :)

Having fun with this. Installed it on retro lucid 5.25 v4. Works. I played with it for a while then decided to install the xfce4 desktop available in the package manager. So far it seems to be a good combination.
