Lighthouse 64 5.12 Beta 1

#1 Post by tazoc »

Image

[Edit:] Newer release available, please see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 386#591386

ImagePlease read the updated release Notes and downloads for Lighthouse64-5.12 B1.
  • Booting with puppy pfix=vesa, ram nomodeset (or vesa from LiveCD boot menu) is required with some recent display cards, otherwise KMS may give a blank screen or problems with shutdown/reboot. Once you have saved your session, boot with puppy pfix=vesa nomodeset and use xorgwizard-puppy (CL - when X is not running) or the Update icon on the desktop to install a suitable display driver and reboot. To get the NVIDIA-260 Pet working you may need to delete the nouveau kernel module like this

    Code: Select all

    rm /lib/modules/2.6.35.7/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nouveau.ko
install the Pet and reboot. For ATI cards, the ATI 10.10 Pet is a more straightforward installation.
Lighthouse Update (Update icon on the desktop) has these software upgrades to Lighthouse 64...
  • ATI Catalyst 10.10, NVIDIA 260 proprietary display drivers (thanks to Kirk and JamesBond) The Devx SFS includes kernel source for compiling the latest drivers direct from ATI or NVIDIA.
  • Full Samba Server 3.60 Image includes support for SMB2 protocol sharing to Windows clients (thanks to gcmartin and Kirk)
  • Chromium, JavaRE, Opera, Thunderbird email, VLC media player and Kompozer HTML editor
A big shout out goes to Rcrsn51 for solving the CUPS printing bug in the Alpha. :D Thanks also to Jim1911, gcmartin, Q5sys, Kirk and JamesBond for pre-release development and everyone who tested 5.11 Alpha.

Lighthouse 64 5.12 includes Shinobar's sfs_load on-the-fly. It works well for me, except for the new KDE-4.6.5 SFS, which needs a reboot for proper layering. I've eliminated the Mariner SFS used previously, so that the KDE SFS add-on only depends on the base Lighthouse 64-5.12--however Gvfs is recommended for KDE's file managers and K3b.

A growing collection of extra SFS, most for 5.12 only: http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/512-x86_64

This release does not include the latest kernel 3.0.3 or Xorg 1.9.5 from Fatdog 64 520, but is loosely based on Fatdog 64 511, with glibc updated from 2.11 to 2.13.

Hi Jim,

Not sure whether it will be Alpha or Beta quality but yes should be soon. The new KDE-4.6.5 SFS has quite a few games. Don't know yet if gnome-games will be an option--will keep that in mind.

Great! One more request, Thunderbird mail client, I've tried to get Fatdog's to work but haven't been successful.

01micko's Slacko, has a gnome-games lite spup. pet that works fine, I've also installed it in your 503, of course it's 32-bit.

Is there any chance that it will be updated to the linux-3.0.3 kernel that fatdog's latest will have at release?

Thanks,
Jim

I'll try to get Tbird 6.0 working. I'd prefer not to change the kernel just yet, that and Xorg are on my future list.

Einar and Ray MK,

Thank you for your inquiries and interest. :) The new release should be ready this week.

We have applied a fix for the CUPS printing bug, (thanks to Rcrsn51 for the solution)

...found more bugs with the Update Manager,
firstrun wizard, (thanks to gcmartin)
screensaver app and task manager, (thanks to gcmartin)

and I'm testing the fixes and updating the ISOs...

then I'll upload 5.12 B1!

Stay tuned,

Lighthouse 64 5.12 B1 is here

#11 Post by tazoc »

I've updated the first post, release Notes and downloads for Lighthouse64-5.12.

Initial boot with pfix=vesa, ram nomodeset is required with some display cards, usually with NVIDIA and the latest ATI models.

Hi TazOC,

You've produced another winner. It's working great on my hardware, including KDE, it is fast, stable, and has a wealth of fine applications. It includes your great innovations such as a 4fs save file, an update feature, a fine selection of alternative window managers and much more. Thank you for sharing the results of much hard work and innovation with us. A special thanks for including the latest Thunderbird.

I discovered the hard way that not only at Initial boot with

Code: Select all

pfix=vesa nomodeset
is required with my Nvidia display card, but it must stay in the menu.lst file until the proper driver (located in update) is loaded. Without that code in the menu.lst, upon initial reboot the screen is blank and there is no opportunity to create a save file. I put the code in the menu.lst did some basic setup, created a save file, then removed the code. On next reboot, it would not boot, just showed some weird horizontal colors so I replaced the code and it rebooted as it should. Then I installed the Nvidia driver and removed the code and it boots properly.

I do have reservations about the new 64/32 bit Wine that's used because it fails to run some of my favorite programs such as e-Sword and it isn't compatible with other Wine programs, therefore it cannot be set up with a shared Wine link. Wine takes up a lot of space and it's great to be able to share it with other pups. I prefer the Fatdog64 Wine setup.

You've made use of a number of radky's fine little applications, he also has a version of Pupsnap that runs great on this LH64, screenshot below was made with it. Also, there is an updated version of PupControl that has some fine features such as PupSysInfo update.

Lots of fun in store checking out all these great features.

Cheers,
Jim

I am having a problem with this pup.
I boot off my usb, (with all the .sfs files copied to my hdd)
if i just boot normally, i get a desktop, but then i just get a blank screen when i try to reboot (the issue mentioned a few posts up from here)
when i try typing in puppy pfix=vesa, ram, it tells me lh512_64 not found (or something similiar) and halts the boot process
if i type in "puppy pfix=vesa" at the boot screen, it boots to desktop, but when i restart i have no option to create a savefile when i reboot.

should i create the savefile from within lhpup somehow?
in the time it took me to boot windows, edit this signature, save it, and shutdown, an identical spec pc was able to boot puppy, start songbird, and reboot 3 times.

lol

First i would like to thank you for all the hard work Tazoc. It`s higly appreciated :) Many thanks from me. It will be used permanently on many of my systems.

I gave it a go yesterday on my main test laptop and my new test laptop. They are equaly speced. only differense is ATi and Nvidia gpu. On my Ati laptop everything worked, KDE with Compiz and the Ati drivers working great. On the Nvidia laptop i got the black screen when i loged off. I use Shinobars "pupsaveconfig" to fix the savefile problem. Installed the Nvidia pet and rebooted. Itstarts KDE, Compiz. but windows are borderless and i cant move them around. I have had the same problem on my ATi laptop in Lucid puppy. No idea how to solve the problem.

And a little tip :) If your computer reboots under copying to memory, it could be your cdrom, lotz of curse words and memory test before i tossed the cdrom;)

Best Regards

Einar

Thanks Crshbndct ill check it out :)

Pupsave config is a tool that allow you to modify a savefile that will be created when you shutdown. So it does not matter that the screen is black on shutdown since the savefile process is now automated

url : http://shino.pos.to/linux/pupsave.html

its an awesome tool

Hi TazOC,

Weird problem with changing backgrounds with KDE WM. Most backgrounds are showing size 0x0 except stripes and a few others. I tried to switch backgrounds and got a black background. Other than black, only stripes and a few others can be applied. All backgrounds show up properly in /usr/share/backgrounds directory. Ideas?

Incidentally, even though LH 64 5.12 is a beta, it's already moved to the top of my menu.lst file so that it's the only OS to be automatically booted.

Regards,
Jim

I have a question simply for some understanding. @Einar help me with these, please,
  1. Was this a desktop or laptop with the bad drive?
  2. Was the media used a CDR or CDRW or DVD-R or DVD+R or DVDRW?
  3. When you created the Live media from ISO did you create a Multi-session media?
  4. Was the device an IDE or a SATA device?
  5. Was it a CD or a DVD reader or writer or combo?
Again, this is just for my personal use as I ONLY run Live media based systems and this information is extremely helpful to me.

Thansk in advance
