Which Wary support ATI Rage 128 pro and openGL? [SOLVED]

#1 Post by Insomniacno1 »

Hi to all, if you read my other threads then you would see that I'm trying to set up a pc with puppy full install and with CAD/CNC. For this I need a puppy version that will support my 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro card with openGL.

Now someone suggested to try wary but not what version to try, Barry states that Wary5 includes OpenGL support but I can't find anywhere if it would support my ATI card.

The CNC programs I need to install through wine has to have openGL or they will not run.

I tried the Retro version of Lucid 525 with 4.3.1 kernel but i'm having some trouble, so I'm considering Wary.

So if Barry K see this I hope he can answer my question or someone else who knows the specifics of Wary.

and if there is something that needs to be done to make it work, i hope you can help:)

with kind regards

Jan

Do a little research on your own and find the post on opengl with the puppysearch link in my sig.

Hmmm, you seem to be boldly going where few may have gone hitherto. And if nobody has been there, the answers to your questions may be unknown. So you may well just have to test and see if you get a result.

There seem to be some potential problems. What version of OpenGL do your Windows problems require for example? The video card you mention is out of the ark and probably only supports an early OpenGL. And you are aware that with all due respect to Wine, results are not guaranteed, and the chicken sacrifices may not work? I expect there is a Wine forum somewhere out there, have you checked there?

In essence you should trial your setup and perhaps come back with specific problems. Good luck.

Info on the ATI card from wiki:

Rage 128 was compliant to Direct3D 6 and OpenGL 1.2. It supported many features from the previous RAGE chips, such as triangle setup, DVD acceleration, and a capable VGA/GUI accelerator core. RAGE 128 added inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) acceleration to the DVD repertoire. It was ATI's first dual texturing renderer, in that it could output two pixels per clock (two pixel pipelines). The processor was known for its well-performing 32-bit color mode, but also its poorly dithered 16-bit mode; strangely, the RAGE 128 was not much faster in 16-bit color despite the lower bandwidth requirements. In 32-bit mode, RAGE 128 was more than a match for the RIVA TNT, and the Voodoo 3 did not support 32-bit at all. The chip was meant to compete with the NVIDIA RIVA TNT, Matrox G200 and G400, and 3dfx Voodoo 3.

ATI implemented a caching technique it called Twin Cache Architecture with Rage 128. The Rage 128 used an 8 kB buffer to store texels that were used by the 3D engine. In order to improve performance even more, ATI engineers also incorporated an 8 KB pixel cache used to write pixels back to the frame buffer.

8 million transistors, 0.25 micrometer fabrication
3D Feature Set
Hardware support for vertex arrays, fog and fog table support
Alpha blending, vertex and Z-based fog, video textures, texture lighting
Single clock bilinear and trilinear texture filtering and texture compositing
Perspective-correct mip-mapped texturing with chroma-key support
Vertex and Z-based reflections, shadows, spotlights, 1.00 biasing
Hidden surface removal using 16, 24, or 32-bit Z-buffering
Gouraud and specular shaded polygons
Line and edge anti-aliasing, bump mapping, 8-bit stencil buffer
250 MHz RAMDAC, AGP 2×

[edit] Rage 128 Pro

Later, ATI developed a successor to the original Rage 128, called the Rage 128 Pro. This chip carried several enhancements, including an enhanced triangle setup engine that doubled geometry throughput to eight million triangles/s, better texture filtering, DirectX 6.0 texture compression, AGP 4×, DVI support, and a Rage Theater chip for composite and S-Video TV-in. This chip was used on the gamer-oriented Rage Fury Pro boards and the business-oriented Xpert 2000 PRO. Rage 128 Pro was generally an even match for Voodoo 3 3500, RIVA TNT2 Ultra, and Matrox G400 MAX.

In Windows XP, OpenGLviewer claims that its openGL 2.0 compliant, and so do Puppy's version of HardiNfo.

I don't think it matter to those programs what version of OpenGL it has, just that it has OpenGL.

Ok here we go:) If your looking for a replacement for Puppy 4.2.1 or really having problems getting your ATI Rage 128 Pro to work then try Wary 5.1.3.

I kept running into missing dependencies in 4.2.1, doesn't happen that often in Wary 5.1.3 and OpenGL works with the ATI Rage 128 Pro AGP 4x 16MB card - after installing the following:

Xorg_xorg_base-7.3.1-p4.pet
Xorg_xorg_servers-7.3-1.pet
Xorg_xorg_full_dri-7.3.pet

You can get them here http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ackages-4/

DO NOT use the ones from the PPM, since they are for the Intel Videocard.

With kind regards

JBJ

Would be nice if this could be made sticky, since there isn't that much in this forum that actually works with the ATI Rage 128 Pro card.[/url]

You should:
1 - edit the subject of the initial post and add at the end of it [SOLVED]
2 - make a recommendation thread in the HOW TO forum.
