How are you booting - off the CD, a flash drive, a frugal install?

I checked the CD and it boots fine. So the problem is with your hardware.

Just now updated my Lupu-526 to Luci-528.
Here's how:

1. Made a bootable Luci-528 CD-RW.

Booted Wary-512, and...
2. Deleted the old SFS file that was sitting beside the old 3fs file in its 04-Lupu folder [renamed it to 04-Luci] on a partition on an internal HDD, and replaced it with the new luci_528.sfs file.

3. Renamed the old lupusave.3fs to lucisave.3fs.

4. Placed the new Luci-528 CD-RW disk in the optical drive and closed the drawer, and rebooted the PC.

5. The 3fs file was found and updated...
The SFS file was loaded.
Got to the desktop OK, and all was just as it should be.
Typing this from there. :D

Did a frugal install on HDD on my Acer Netbook D250 10" screen with intel chips set. Used nosmp just in case it is needed.

The automatic set up chose 800 x 600 but I changed to 1024 x 768 and that worked. Haha why does it work on this one when it always fails or Dpup and Squeeze and Spup versions? What is different?

Tested Firefox 5 and looked at pics and videos and used streaming video from local TV station but did not test of PPM or other such things.

All looks okay as far as I know.

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Yes,frugal install.I placed the 3 files into a test folder as I always do and use grub to boot it.
The only difference is with the lupu/luci sfs
This is the grub line I use:-

title Testing4
root (hd0,6)
kernel /testing4/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd pdev1=sda9 psubdir=testing4 xforcevesa nomodeset
initrd /testing4/initrd.gz

I checked with my own frugal install and it worked fine.

Why are vmlinuz and initrd.gz on sda7 while the sfs file is on sda9?

I should also mention that I did this...
So that a pupsave on an internal HDD is treated as though a pupsave on a Flash drive...
And then...

I always do this [and this to prevent a spurious warning] to my Lupu's, and now Luci.
This so that I'm then able to choose if/when to manually save the session during the session, and...
To choose at shut-down/reboot "to save or not to save".

My apologies rcrsn51.
I must have had a rogue.sfs.Re-downloaded the .iso and all is working now :)

UNRAR ?

#29 Post by nancy reagan »

Read somewhere UNRAR would be included.

Being a low-profile user wonder "HOWTO" run it.

Don't know about 'sh's, pins, symlinking etc etc.

Thanks for the distro heavy job pity for not taking Bigpup's advice "Take a break"

Unrar is part of luci. The easiest way to use it is to run Utilities > Xarchieve and open a .rar file in it. Clicking on a .rar file should also open Xarchieve. If that doesn't work, it is probably easily fixed. Just let me know.

was manual Fresh frugal install .
try again. same error as before. the gui wont start at all to do the configuration. dont get to the re-boot stage.
md5sum was correct and it is written to my internal sda2, not my faulty sdcard reader. have pwidges -2.3.6 installed. stopped pwidgets. stiil wont get to a startmount gui.

THANK YOU Playdaz for this outstanding distro. You have done a outstanding job putting this together and you are to be commended for your dedication and hard work on this project.

Upgrade from LP525 with universal installer went well

#37 Post by openwell2 »

Hi,
I was able to upgrade from full install hdd Puppy 525 using the universal installer, pfix=ram and upgrade choice. Everything looks really nice and graphics seem much clearer in 528.
But I noticed that it uses a lot of ram? I have firefox 6.0 and desktop running with no flashplayer site and it is using about 270MB of 2.5 GB on P4 2.8 Ghz Sony Vaio desktop. I have swap file of 2.0 GB and 120 GB Hdd.
With a flashplayer site open in firefox and this forum I am using about 370MB?
Before with same site combo I was only using aroung 200MB?
Does this seem correct? :?
Is anyone else seeing such a high jump in Ram usage with it?
Thanks

527RC Revert to gnome-mplayer 1.0.3 - cd cache problem in 104
Look forward to spinning this up.. JWM keybindings intrigues me.. I've liked JWM going all the way back in the 2.1x days, but was an immediate convert to ICEwM upon discovering it-- lame as it may sound, the keyboard shortcuts for window manipulation that Windoze uses got engrained in my brain long ago, and can be used to do things quickly and in production quantity way better than any approach I've seen from a Linux. (KDE as a big, sprawling example of new key sequences to learn.. not fun.) For a typist to have to use a mouse all the time to simply close windows or whatever is maddening. Having the 1st letter underlined in each menu pull down is such a relief, meaning you can continue at the keyboard instead of mousing about. So I guess what I'm wondering is, I suppose one still has to separately install the Window Manager Chooser .pet and the IceWm-Lucid519rc{whatever}.pet if one is needing this, such as myself? I'm hoping that the keybindings bit will be enough to go on whereby I can map all the functions to act as IceWm does, so I can be on the same page wares-wise with the mass kennel population in this regard-- I'll post whatever glorious .config file I can forge if this is the case.

Know not of gecko-player, but like I mentioned elsewhere, gnome-mplayer will be the 1st thing I replace -- takes eons to fill a cache & begin play (even when pointed to 127.0.0.1:8000 that's relaying out of streamripper that rips along in the bkgd all the while I'm online (should be instantaneous)) but worse yet it goes looking for artwork on the net (I've yet to figure out where-- guess I need to do ethereal or squid or something) when I'm playing a danged local file. And did I mention you can't change the cache size-- there's one part in the prefs referring to cache but it's unrelated and/or nonfunctional.

But, don't let my whining above deter from my heartfelt thanks for all y'alls work keeping Puppy as solid and functional as it's become!

Delta 5.2.7rc to 5.2.8

#39 Post by Snail »

Thank you Playdayz for an immense amount of effort. I have been really impressed, not only by your individual effort but also by the way you have harnessed the widely disparate viewpoints and abilities of the forum to make a huge amount of progress, with a minimum of friction. Your diplomatic skills are a huge asset to Puppy, as much so as your technical ones. We can be an unreasonably demanding lot at times, alas, but never unappreciative.

Is it possible to have a 527rc to 528 delta please?

My Right click options package is able to use unrar.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67013

It is designed for lupu 525 but it worked on luci 268 fairly
well when I tested it.
