A problem is the audio icon when there is grey
background. (See the screenshots ) There
is a noticeable fringing effect around the audio.png icon
when grey is the background.
Jemimah solved this problem with a different icon.


I suggest a replacement for
/usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/ROX/MIME/audio.png
with Jemimah's
/usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/ROX/MIME/audio.png

... My first idea for a fix is to include XineDVD which I wanted to do anyway, *except* the iso would then be too big to fit into 256MB ram. ....

• Your XineDVD should be the direction, for, as I understand it, it covers the CD and the DVD media.
• The 2006 PC Intel spec does NOT include 256MB PC. This spec was to be compatible with Microsoft's XP SP2 and it was P4 Celeron + with 512MB. There seems to be some minor confusion in the community on this.
• And an added note, all of my reports have shown that a Live media load (steady-state) is less that 128MB. Hardinfo currently is showing 1545MB (122MB used)
• And, as I remember from years ago, seems that pfix=copy did yield acceptable performance for me on the smallest PC I had then. I have not done this in over 3 years, though.

P.S. I just looked and found a PC which was NOT discarded. This machine is circa 2003 eMonster 500. It has a P3 (slot CPU) and 384MB. If you want me to test your XineDVD iso, "for grins" ask. I will setup, test and post a Hardinfo report.

Yes gcmatrin does explain the hostname dilemma well. rerwin has tweaked firstrun--maybe he sees a quick fix.

To set the record straight, for 527 I have not touched the script that handles the PS window, countrywizard.qs. I did get into it to simplify the numlock logic, but that is not going into 527.

When it comes to the business of logging in and out, I am not sure what that is all about, since one does not normally log into puppy. With those disclaimers out of the way, I have an idea where to start, but would need assistance in instructing a user in what to do.

The first place to change is in the processing of the change to the hostname field in the dialog window. Currently, the change goes directly to the HOSTNAME environment variable, without the script even knowing that a change was made. Making that logic detect that a change was made, is something I could do. Then the user would need to be told about the logout and login and be given the option to either be sent to the prompt or to undo the hostname change.

That is about as far as I could reasonably go, as I am very unsure about somehow automating the logout/in process.

Those are my thoughts. But I believe that shinobar should weigh in on this, assuming he is more competent in the area logging in/out and dealing with the command-prompt level. I could provide the hook point in the dialog to initiate a process, but others would be needed to advise on the appropriate actions once the hostname is changed by the user. But shinobar should know about this before I start.

I want to know is it safe to upgrade via the normal way
with this version without blowing away all my other loaded
progs.

Frugal + save on USB flash drive

After several reboots the speaker icon for Retrovol is not showing in the tray.
Worked OK on initial boot and frugal install.
Only after several reboots does this happen.

Run Retrovol from console get this:

Copied .retrovorc file from the 527.sfs of the 527rc2 ISO to /root/ of the frugal install.
Booted frugal install.
Still no Retrovol speaker icon on tray.
Looked in: /root/.retrovolrc was there.

I would not do it because 527rc2 is still in testing and not the final version.

If you want to do it to test upgrading a full install it should work, but I would not do it to your main full install. Only to a full install you do not need.

Retrovol is not showing in the tray

Already flagged up issues with Rv on previous page, except in my case the tray icon was the only access - didn't show in Menu and had been muted. We've travelled this road before!

Edited: For those who may not have thought about it, the Puppy main console, Ctrl-Alt-F1 is an "ever present login" of the root user. If you issue, either, the logout or the exit command on that terminal, Puppy will "redrive" a login; automaitcally,, "silently"..

This is new knowledge for me. But I may be getting the idea. Does the following make sense?

Could the "restart-X" shutdown option include the logout and login commands (or whatever the correct commands are) before restarting xwin? Does xwin run in the "main console"?

My thinking is that a new option in /tmp/wmexitmode.txt -- say, "relogin" -- could trigger the re-login logic in xwin. The Personal Settings function would detect that a hostname change was made and, in a manner similar to the dialogue resulting from a time zone change, have the user click on either a button to do the relogin-restart or a button to cancel the change of hostname. The relogin option would execute a new "wm..." script, wmrelogin, that would be similar to the wmrestart script. Or maybe wmrestart could be modified to accept an argument to have it set the relogin option for xwin to read.

That would seem do-able relatively quickly -- if it has a chance of actually working. The question, then, is: What is the environment situation when xwin runs for a restart of X?

Over the years I have seen a number of discussions regarding official versions and version numbering. For many this is very confusing, even to an old dog like me.

It does make some sense to have Official releases separate from many other derivatives.

My main point is, as long as it has a unique title and version identifier it can be recognised as being different.

I never really liked the idea of Lucid versus Lupu versus Luci. It just compounded the confusion. I think Alpha, Beta and RC was enough to let people know it was in development.

My thoughts on numbering has always been as simple as this:

Name-5.2.8

The first digit (5) represents major upgrades/versions
The second digit (2) represents minor upgrades
The third digit (8) represents bug fixes

An example of Name-5.2.0 with a bug fix and some additional changes/apps would be Name-5.3.1

I suppose it is possible to have something like Name-5.87.764 if there were many changes and bugfixes, at least you would know what has affected the change.

Alpha, Beta and RC would not normally be added to a bugfix release.

I didn't post this to create a lot of discussion, simply to provide my point of view and what I believe would be a simpler method.
