No that didn't happen in beta 5 but it had an issue with the screen saver.
Bill,

Are you sure about that? Would you mind testing beta5 again? We're trying to decide which kernel to use, they all have problems:

3.0 -- Crash with cifs mounts. This is a CIFS/AUFS bug. So 3.0 is out.

2.6.39.3 --- Intel ironlake graphics have problems. I had reported that radeon graphics had problems, but that was my mistake. Screen energy saver problem.

2.6.38.8 --- I've had a kernel oops at shutdown, but have not been able to reproduce. The USB related oops you had, Which seems to affect several kernels: http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2 ... 00489.html Maybe even 2.6.39.3.

I deleted my old beta 5 save file and created a new one.

Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.002 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.006 FPS

I plugged in 6 flash drives and nothing bad happened (sdh1 is a
sandisk cruz that somehow comes up with sr1 optical too).

I'll use this for a day or two and report back if anything bad does
happen.

EDIT: I let it sit idle until the screen saver kicked in and then moved the mouse and the screen came back on, I think the problem I had with it before may have been on my nvidia pc but not sure about that.

Thanks for that bill. 2.6.39.4 will be out in the next couple days We'll give that a go. Hopfully that will be the last kernel I compile for a while.

Also I uploaded the BlueGriffon html editor to the repo. This was built from git/svn, so it's a verion 1.2 preview.

Hi

I have briefly booted beta6 twice now.

The first time, it booted to desktop no probs, 1920 x 1080 res, perfect for monitor (but too small for my eyes!). I checked out a flash game that has never worked too well in 64 bit. It worked. Checked out some flash / web based videos, opened 3 tabs, kernel panic...

The second time, booted same, no probs. Played hi def video beautifully in gxine. Screen refresh is perfect, no flicker. It flickers for me in every puppy and ubuntu I've tried on this PC, so a good win there. Clicked mp3, doesn't play, gxine opens and immediately closes, flac does the same. Both play if opened with pmusic. After closing pmusic, no other sound works though.

So far, end of testing. More time tomorrow

Thanks p310don. It would be good if you can compare beta6 and beta5 - which one is more stable for you?

As said by kirk above - he has been testing 3 kernels, basically:
beta4 - kernel 3.0
beta5 - kernel 2.6.39.3
beta6 - kernel 2.6.38.8 (also used in beta3 I think, but beta6 has all the fixes found in beta4 & beta5)

kernel 3.0 is definitely no-go at this point (not until the cifs/aufs bug is fixed), so the choice is between beta5 & beta6.

I haven't used beta6 a lot myself, but beta5 is rock stable for me.

For sound, please see my earlier notes on page 1. You need to edit /etc/group and add "spot" the the "audio" group.

cheers!

SFSs versus PETS

Enjoy.
James thanks for this.

As you know some of us are exclusive live media users. Is there going to be a 64bit PET available to make this a part of the PC's system at save-session time? Maybe via PPM.

Another PET

Found Here and announced here.

Yet Another PET
Would you also promote SAMBA 3.5.6 to the PPM, too.

Hope this helps. and thanks again.

OK, booted beta5 as requested.

Booted to 1920 x 1080 resolution, can't change it via xorgwizard, so squinting it is! Screen refresh is beautiful.

Fiddled around a bit, got hardinfo going, reports correct hardware. Keyboard media keys work. Mouse forward and back buttons work in firefox, unlike in 5.25 which I usually run on this machine.

Mp3 and flac opens gxine briefly, but no actual music. Same as beta6

Opened flash game, plus 3 tabs of flash videos

kernel panic

Surely this must be my hardware, as others are reporting good stability with fatdog. But, hardware does work fine with other puppies, and 64 ubuntu, which I used to use on it.

Hardinfo from 5.25

Here are some wallpapers for Fatdog64 by Futwerk.
He will work with you if there is something specific you would like.

I have been trying without much luck to find a Puppy that works on my latest Dell Inspiron 15R Sandy Bridge i5-2430 laptop with Intel HD3000 integrated graphics 1366x768. I am so glad I came across fatdog64 520b6. Everything just works out-of-the box except for WiFi. For WiFi, I just had to drop the latest Intel iwl firmware for N-1030 in /lib/firmware and reboot. The firmware is here http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/d ... 68.5.2.tgz. I replaced xine with vlc as default media player. I really love my fatdog64 520b6! It becomes my main OS, now. I Virtualbox into my Windows XP whenever I need to run Windows. VBox XP on fatdog64 is amazingly fast on my new Sandy Bridge laptop, stuffed with 8G of RAM.
Grabbed all the iwlwifi firmware, it will be in beta7.

p310don,

Without seeing the oops output I can only guess. Give beta7 a try when I get it uploaded. Lots of changes, more than I would like at this point, but I think they're all for the better. Jamesbond has been busy, got xorg-server going with udev, so we've rebuilt the xorg stuff. Running without a xorg.conf by default now. You can plug in a Wacom tablet and it will work right away. Fixed some bugs in the rc.sysint.. Compiled 2.6.39.4, alsa now has an equalizer, other stuff too. I'll upload beta7 tonight or tomorrow.

bigpup,

Thanks I'll check it out.

I took the photo when it happened, but didn't upload it. Silly! This is from beta5. I think its basically the same oops as beta 6

Thanks Kirk,
I look forward to trying beta 7. Sorry I posted my previous post under the wrong area, beta 2 instead of beta 6.
One thing I forgot to mention: sound works but the volume is not as strong as under Windows. Wonder why.

downloaded beta7, wifi works out-of-the box, but cannot install virtualbox with existing devx.sfs because of wrong kernel 2.6.39 (bet6 uses 2.6.38 I think). WIll there be a new devx.sfs for beta7?
