Fatdog64-520 beta6

#1 Post by kirk »

I've uploaded beta 6.

Changes since beta 6:

Linux-2.6.38.8

That's the only big change. Some people reported a problem with the screen energy saver hanging, for BillToo this was on a radeon. So I tested beta5 again on my radeon box and noticed that 2d acceleration was not working. That's too big of a bug, so I recompiled 2.6.38.8. It should be a good kernel, Fedora and Ubuntu had releases with it, so it should be well tested. We also get back the big kernel lock which might be useful to someone. So just to review, we had to dump the 3.0 kernel due to a cifs/aufs bug and dump 2.6.39 due to a radeon bug. Maybe if I built xf86-video-ati from git it would work, but then who knows what else that might break.

Changes since beta 4:

Flash Player 11b
Linux 2.6.29.3
e2fprogs-1.41.14
parted-3.0
gparted-0.9.0
acpid-2.0.10

Changes since beta 3:

Firefox-5.0.1
udev-166
Linux-3.0rc7
Sevn configured.

Changes since beta 2:

Firefox-5.0
Thunderbird-5.0
Added Peasyscan.
Fixed encrypted saves
Fixed some mime types for Firefox and Thunderbird integration.
Added folder /usr/share/cups/model.
Other small fixes.

Changes since beta 1:

Upgrade to Mesa-7.10.3
Added Shinobar's SFS-on-the-fly
Added nmblookup
Recompiled kernel with Radeon KMS enabled by default.
Fixed JWM menu.
Fixed Downloads folder drag and drop.
Fixed Cups permissions.

The beta 1 notes and change log are here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=69138
Get it here:

Make sure you delete any old save files before testing.

Tried to compile NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.21, however, I get an error message "unable to find system utility ldconfig". Pfind cannot locate glibc which is also required. DISREGARD, problem was caused by bad download of devx.

Also, beta 6 failed to boot the beta 5 save file and reboot still restarts X on first try and second attempt, it reboots properly. Otherwise with a new save file, everything looks good so far.

Wonder why I get an error message, I'll download the devx again and give it another try.

Bad devx was the problem, no error with new download.

That's pretty nice. Thanks again for testing Bill.

Thanks,

I got my dream machine :)

@Jim

I got the same error that you did when I tried SFS-Load on the fly so I loaded the devx the regular way after I'd created a new save file.

Hi kirk,

Manual frugal install on two computers, on both beta 6 has worked very well.

I am posting from a Dell Dimension E510 using a wireless connection via an USB wireless adapter. Thanks for including the necessary Realtek drivers. As you can see from the attached screenshot, I have loaded some extra software, OOO 64 bit works fine, including printing.

Cheers,
Jim

I did a manual frugal install of beta 6.
Fri 29 Jul 2011 Operating System: Fatdog64-520 Linux 2.6.38.8
0.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Redwood PRO [Radeon HD 5500 Series]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS product: REDWOOD 01.00

X Server: Xorg Driver: radeon
X.Org version: 1.9.5
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (508x285 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD REDWOOD
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.3

AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 Processor
Core 0: 800 1: 800 2: 800 3: 800 MHz
# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
5780 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1155.930 FPS
5793 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1158.508 FPS
5825 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1164.968 FPS

I installed the devx and compiled ati-driver-installer-11-7-x86.x86_64.run
driver and it compiled without error, then did "aticonfig --initial"
and "xwin" but x wouldn't start and kept leaving me at the prompt.
Entering xorgwizard + xwin got me back to the desktop.

Later:
I plugged in a flash drive to access a file and as soon as I did that
it caused a kernel panic and a black screen full of text with info
about interupts and kernel 2.6.38.8, the lights on my keyboard were
flashing also.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is info from a wary that I made in woof with one
of pemasu's kernels and after compiling the ati proprietary driver.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fri 29 Jul 2011 Operating System: Wary Puppy-080 Linux 2.6.38.4

dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (521x293 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: ATI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 5570
OpenGL version string: 4.1.10907 Compatibility Profile Context

AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 Processor
Core 0: 2592 1: 2592 2: 2592 3: 2592 MHz
# glxgears
39082 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7816.334 FPS
40863 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8172.508 FPS
40862 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8172.388 FPS

The open source driver in beta 6 (and earlier) works pretty well but I don't
understand why the proprietary driver can't work too, anyhow,I hope this info is
useful.

Calibre Install Fails

#10 Post by Fishy »

Calibre install works fine in 5.2.6 now but I would like to get it running on Fatdog. Attached is a screen capture of the failure. I have added python-2.6.4-amd64 python library, dbus-1.2.16, qt4-4.6.1. :?

On another note I am having a heck of a time with sound. Lots of it but to control levels I have to use alsamixer. Both xine and pmusic have no control over volume.

Working well otherwise, good work. :D

@Fishy, could you share a hardinfo summary or attach a hardinfo report?

Hope this helps
Fishy, to get control over the sound, please open "/etc/group" with text editor, and change the line that says

Code: Select all

audio::17:
to

Code: Select all

audio::17:spot
This will be fixed in the next beta.

cheers!

The open source driver in beta 6 (and earlier) works pretty well but I don't
understand why the proprietary driver can't work too, anyhow,I hope this info is
useful.
The ATI installer doesn't know what to do with /usr/X11R7. Nvidia knows where to install things. I'll make a ATI pet package once we're sure about the kernel.
Later:
I plugged in a flash drive to access a file and as soon as I did that
it caused a kernel panic and a black screen full of text with info
about interupts and kernel 2.6.38.8, the lights on my keyboard were
flashing also.
Can you reproduce this without the ATI stuff in there? If so can you take a picture of the kernel panic?

I deleted my save file and rebooted the computer and loaded beta6,
then rebooted again creating a new save file.
I plugged in one flash drive and it was okay so I plugged in a second
flash drive and it produced a kernel panic.
The pictures aren't great but maybe you can see enough.

Wow that's bad :( Does this also happen with beta5?
I just tried with beta5, with save file in harddisk, I plug in 2 flash drives (one FAT32 partition and the other NTFS) - it doesn't crash on me.

No that didn't happen in beta 5 but it had an issue with the screen saver.

Bill,

Are you sure about that? Would you mind testing beta5 again? We're trying to decide which kernel to use, they all have problems:

3.0 -- Crash with cifs mounts. This is a CIFS/AUFS bug. So 3.0 is out.

2.6.39.3 --- Intel ironlake graphics have problems. I had reported that radeon graphics had problems, but that was my mistake. Screen energy saver problem.

2.6.38.8 --- I've had a kernel oops at shutdown, but have not been able to reproduce. The USB related oops you had, Which seems to affect several kernels: http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2 ... 00489.html Maybe even 2.6.39.3.
