Fatdog64-520 beta 5

#1 Post by kirk »

I've uploaded beta 5.

Changes since beta 4:

Flash Player 11b
Linux 2.6.29.3
e2fprogs-1.41.14
parted-3.0
gparted-0.9.0
acpid-2.0.10

We had to dump the 3.0 kernel. It crashes on cifs mounts, so now we're at 2.6.39.3. To bad, I really liked 3.0. The CPU frequency scaling governor now defaults to on demand. Acpid is hopefully fixed now, we just support suspend, hibernation doesn't make sense with our boot speed. Other small fixes in there too. I'm out of town for a couple days, don't know how often I can check in.

Changes since beta 3:

Firefox-5.0.1
udev-166
Linux-3.0rc7
Sevn configured.

Changes since beta 2:

Firefox-5.0
Thunderbird-5.0
Added Peasyscan.
Fixed encrypted saves
Fixed some mime types for Firefox and Thunderbird integration.
Added folder /usr/share/cups/model.
Other small fixes.

Changes since beta 1:

Upgrade to Mesa-7.10.3
Added Shinobar's SFS-on-the-fly
Added nmblookup
Recompiled kernel with Radeon KMS enabled by default.
Fixed JWM menu.
Fixed Downloads folder drag and drop.
Fixed Cups permissions.

The beta 1 notes and change log are here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=69138
Get it here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ns/fatdog/

Make sure you delete any old save files before testing.

I was away from the computer for a while and when I got back the
screen saver was on, really on, no amount of mouse movement etc. would
get the screen back.
I did a couple of control-alt-backspace followed by a couple of
control-alt-deletes to reboot the computer.
I've used the option in the setup menu to disable the screen saver now.

Hi kirk,

Frugal install on an ext3 partition booted properly and is working great although I did not experience Billtoo's problem, I have run into a few other problems.

It does not reboot properly, on first try reboot simply restarts X, on second try it does reboot system.

I complied and installed the NVIDIA Driver Version 275.09.07 which appears to work fine however, running glxgears gives this error:
# glxgears
glxgears: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32

On another system that is on a wireless network, it failed to recognize the Belkin Wireless USB Adapter, N300, Realtek Product ID 845a. This USB adapter has worked fine on an earlier beta2, I believe, and uses the r8712u driver. It did not work with any network settings. Frisbee comes up with nothing either.

Cheers,
Jim

@Billtoo,

Thanks, the new NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.21.run 64 bit nvidia
driver worked for me also. I should have checked for the latest driver. The older driver installation must have messed up glxgears.

Tried your emelfm2-0 pet. Works good.

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for testing guys.

Jim1911,

The firmware for that wifi chip was not included. It probably worked before because you first booted a OS that had the firmware included. I'll put it in for the next release. You can try installing this debian package and rebooting:

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/all/ ... k/download

We'll have Nvidia and ATI pets for final.

It worked, posting using wireless connection now.

Hi everybody,
Has anybody got NFS running as a client?
I've checked the nfs files and they all seem to be there but I'm getting
"mount.nfs: Operation not permitted"

this exact same nfs share works fine from Lucid 525 etc
Has something changed since fatdog 500?
is the mounting of nfs different in someway?

thanks

DC

It seems to work for me. I tested with the server and client on the same computer. Try the rox apps I made located at /root/spot/.File-Sharing. There are instructions there too.

I tested briefly with my Acer 5820TG laptop. Works just fine. Only thing was that boot parameter pkeys=fi lead to non-bootable situation. I remembered having this with earlier version also.
Suspend by closing lid worked and resume also, even net connected automatically. No problems with losing net connection.
Looks pretty solid for me.
Next thing will be trying compiling......

Nvidia and video reporting

#12 Post by gcmartin »

My environment: Live media operation via DVD

Like @Billtoo, I too had a similar occurrence.

As shared by @Jim1911, it might be nice to include 2 video items if you think them appropriate:
  • nVidia Driver referenced
  • Report-Video-GLX
I understand about the use of the icon in ROX that you reference here:

But could you share the NFS commands you used in the terminal for the MOUNT command?

Thanks in advance

Must be a "feature" of this kernel. Ok, I've disabled the screen saver by default.
But could you share the NFS commands you used in the terminal for the MOUNT command?
I didn't do that. I used the rox apps I created for NFS. It's more than a just a mount command, there are several kernel modules to load as well. I tested with two computers. still works. I'll restore the menu entry.

Power-saving via Screen saver

Considering how our planet is heating up, any power-savings is a help and the "right thing to do".

If there is any information you feel would be helpful in providing insight, ask here or PM me and I will supply it for you.

Hope this helps.

re: NFS

hi Kirk,

Thanks for the reply. I tried your software with the same results.

I've got it working by forcing version 3 ( mount -t nfs -o vers=3 etc)

this is to my readynas box.

So is this the difference between Lucid 525 and fatdog?

thanks again

Your server is probably defaulting to version 2. Version 2 is included by default in the kernel modules. The problem is AUFS doesn't support version 2. From the aufs docs:
• NFSv2 is not supported. When you mount the exported aufs from your NFS client, you will need to some NFS options like v3 or nfsvers=3, especially if it is nfsroot.
You might get away with a version 2 mount if it's outside of the layered filesystem (e.g. /mnt/home/folder). I don't know about Lucid 525, for Fatdog64 AUFS is configured to handle (v3) nfs mounts within the layered filesystem.

mhWaveEdit will not start beacause it is missing libjack.so.

#17 Post by nimbus »

Fatdog64 is missing it's only audio capture function (as far as I can tell) because when installing mhWaveEdit it doesn't include libjack.so.0 so no start.
How does one go about installing this library?
Also, an interesting note. I saw a comment a few pages back to the effect of why 64bit not any better than 32 except for addresses. Well not to knock puppy studio 3.3 but, renoise and sunvox run with much less audio latency on Fatdog64 than that 32bit rt kernel. This system is snappy.
Thanks for any tips on mhWaveEdit

nimbus,

There is a audio SFS with lots of stuff in it. Also, I've made a pet package of Audacity-1.3.13b, it's in the repo, might want to try that. It does require wxwidgets, also in the repo.

I'm not happy with 2.6.39.3 right now, after the reports of the screen energy saver problem I did some more testing on my radeon box. I noticed 2d acceleration is not working. So I'll be testing with 2.6.38.8 tonight.
