Devs who are you, what do or don't you do, and how can we, the Users, help?

Recently amigo posted his [snipped] views.....

The original purpose of the proposed PLUG was mainly to get a unified voice which could represent Puppy users before the developers. That is not really a bad idea, but it depends on the developers being willing to listen and take the users wishes into account. I have seen no indication, so far, that any of them are willing to do that -and I'm pretty sure I know why. It's simple. Users have no idea what their suggestions might entail. Devs are usually either uninterested in the ideas, or don't have the skills to implement them. And explaining why that is so to a 'user' is already a huge waste of time.

...for a Puppy Linux Users Group, a go-between twixt users and devs, [and some] which has been kicked around the forum since the end of May, but which just won't lay down....like all healthy, lively pups Wink

After several starts, including a recent near massacre, John M has stated that he'll allow the forum to have a PLUG Section/sub-sections

To facilitate the ideas thusfar, see the suggestions outlined in my post here

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=543505#543505

So, in order to move forward with this idea, we need to start by finding out - Who you are, and what you can/cannot do. Please list your specialities as well as limitations, and perhaps some ideas to inform users how they can better help you

I know many of you are doing sterling work, to name but a few, not in any particular order,
playdayz, 01micko, ttuuxxx, big_bass and amigo, runtt21 and prit1, puppyluvr, Sylvander, Scottman, Iguleder, mu, raffy, dougal, jemimah, John Biles, pizzasgood, pemasu, rerwin, tempestuous, CatDude, dejan555, trio, tasmod, Flash, trapster, crash, aragon, sunburnt, rcrsn51, muggins, zigbert, Bruce B, Béèm, magerlab, nyu, YoN, shinobar, clarf, 8-bit, thunor, sickgut, tazoc, sheepy, battleshooter, and all those who I haven't mentioned, including those in the non-English sections, - what a team!! Very Happy

....PLEASE come forward ....and take a bow Wink , you're going in my soon to be posted 'Unsung Heroes List' - once I have added some more names! [Might even add Barry K and John M lol]

Most of you already doing OS work, have testers/fans, so already have a user interface,
....but what don't you have time to say, or not want to post in your threads - how CAN we help you, if we don't know?

After all a dev cannot live by 'this doesn't work's alone....kudos is needed for maintaining energy and integrity, and people may simply not have come across your work

Would you the Puppy DEVS, for example, be interested in a Top5 ...

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=545120#545120

...list of suggestions, which could include a DEV's Top5 btw, and would you give feedback to a Users Group spokesperson - AFAIK, both playdayz and 01micko have expressed an interest/support [confirmation please, guys Smile]

In my reply to amigo's comment,

Quote:
'it depends on the developers being willing to listen and take the users wishes into account. I have seen no indication, so far, that any of them are willing to do that....'

...I suggested that I understood what he was saying, but thought,

'Heck, has anyone actually asked? I don't recall seeing it recently....Lot's of theories, but DEV's views...?'

So here I am, asking...

Your input towards this goal of all-round improvements to the Puppy Experience, as in both the Top5's and PLUG's thread, would be greatly appreciated, thanks, guys'n'gals Very Happy

Note: This post/thread will hopefully be copied to the PLUG Section, once it's set up, for collation and updating of this vital information

I developed a nasty skin complaint once. It was 'Open Sores' but thought it best not to share....

Gee, thanks, Keef - a moment of light relief after a heavy read, was it? Laughing

Quite funny, but I rather wish you didn't share...

Hi my name is ttuuxxx, I'm kind of new around here, so hi everyone, lol lol lol Well as dev's go its easier to say what I don't do, hmmm haven't compiled many kernels only a couple and don't have the interest to do much more work on them, I don't do/like wireless, I do some coding but by far there are other way more gifted coders out there, Other than those 3 things I do do just about everything else. I enjoy messing around with graphics, making icons, themes etc, I enjoy compiling, I enjoy, troubleshooting, building new releases, helping users, and overall just about anything to do with linux and oh ya I enjoy a nice cold case a beer and a good action or sci-fi movie. lol

sickgut here

Comming from a hacking background i first identify the flaws in something and then proceed to exploit it and see just how far a certain flaw can be manipulated and how much damage you can do with the minimum of tools in the simplest way with the minimum effort.

recently ive decided to turn my life around and not focus on such destructive behaviour as this has contributed to the deterioration of personal relationships and personally a guilty consience that seems to trap me in a dark place. So in the last couple of years ive decided to reverse the process, still attain the same sense of accomplishment and use the same skills i have by identifying a weakness in something but then setting about to improve it in the most efficient way with the least amount of tools with the minimum of effort.

i believe that something can be made better by eliminating weakness.

It seems pointless to go on about the good things that Puppy linux has as we all know what they are and to list them will make this post too long even compared to my lengthy ramblings. But as will all highly specialized things there are flaws, puppy is the ultimate in small fast general desktop OSes but this lends itself to 2 main downfalls, the first is package management and the seccond is the lack of techy linux commands and server stuff that can be used at the commandline.

These are my goals:

1) Bring package management to Puppy that is as good as the debian apt-get system and that uses a major distros repository and auto slims these packages down for use on puppy. The benefit being that the devs dont have to spend all their lives compiling packages for puppy, if we can leech of a major distros repo then more manpower/ labour is available to spend on the OS itself.

2) Create a package or set of packages for puppy that let puppy be used without a running xorg/ gui with a frame buffer console that supports higher resolutions and establishes all network connections automatically and starts a ssh server ftp server webserver etc and something similar to anyterm that provides a http to ssh gateway. I would like to be able to turn puppy into a OS that can be used by VPS providers. For this to work I will need to setup the package management stuff first.

And there you have it
this is me and what i am planning to do for the community here.

I think you mean cracking, not hacking http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html#what_is
