Anyone tried this one, yet? Announced on DW, today. At 50M could be a contender?

PLD is "text-only" - similar to Puppy One-bone - that is no GUI interface. This is quite hard-core. I tried Puppy One-Bone [shudder] - not for me BUT for those so inclined . . .

My next Puppys to try will be grafpup 1.04 and Mean Puppy 2 (when released) The only distro that comes close to Puppy (and is being developed) is Austrumi. If you want to try something else try that. Mitrax was good but not being developed. If you want a tester suite I think BBC-Linux is good (nothing to do with BBC TV) but again not developed.

Now that Puppy has a swap file and can be used with 32meg machines I feel less inclined to recommend anything else.

Yes - there is a GUI PLD somewhere, though. What's the problem with OneBone?
I tried Austrumi - impressive. Didn't like BBC. Flonix could've become a leader, but they got greedy and tried to sell it.

There is nothing wrong with One Bone if you are happy working from the command line. I am not. I require a GUI

Sadly I still use a 3D optical mouse (my last mouse run away with the mouse-ball - to play football)

Indeed, I have the same aversion to CLI. However, it occurs to me that if one could learn the commands to start a browser and an email client from the console, this could make a useful contribution?

How about links (elinks ?) and pine, both in command-line (browser and mail programs)? More software here.

The reverse is true - once you're used to quick CLI, you would detest the slowness of GUI Smile

(except that both are quick in Puppy)

Better than Pine is Mutt, since Pine cannot access pop or imap mailboxes. Pine will only read traditional Unix mailspools which require a fully configured mail server and associated security headaches. Not for me. With Mutt you still need a way to get outgoing mail off the machine but that is easier than accepting the incoming mail.

Elinks is awesome, better than a lot of graphical browsers.

And honestly, I don't know how most of you can survive without Midnight Commander. It's about the most useful tool I can think of. I use it not just as a file manager but as an archive manager and ftp client, even doing transfers from one ftp host to another. And to tell you the truth it's got a million other features I don't even know about yet.

I haven't tried PLD yet myself, but for a while I had a text only install of FreeBSD that was really a very pleasant system to use, especially with the gdm mouse support. If we can get that into the next OneBone I bet you guys will like it a lot better. It's really almost like running X at that point, except there is no WM menu or desktop icons to hold your hand with. You have to actually remember the names of the programs that you have installed so you can type them into the console.

It was Barry's mention of Elinks that attracted my attention. In the aulden dayes, like many correspondents, I had absolutely no problems using various DOSes and had no complaints, either. Having learnt all the commands, and many of the switches, and having grown a lot older, too, I now find it difficult to learn a new system of commands. I guess a sip at the elixir of youth might help? Use PM for offers.............
