Here's the latest version I just compiled it on 2.14x and added gtkspell also to it.

Hey, thanks a lot, ttuuxxx !

Installed the sylpheed-3.2.0beta1-i386.pet over the existing Sylpheed, seems to work fine.

I'd found a post by rcrsn51 that probably Sylpheed's own updater was unlkely to work with Puppy.
So I'll turn off their reminder, as you suggested.

Many thanks to you and the others.

Good to hear :), I was wondering why there aren't so many user responses with this release, lol

Hi. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm just testing Top 8 at the moment and for some reason I keep getting crashes when I try and update a spreadsheet in Gnumeric.

It may be a Gnumeric bug rather than a Top8 bug but I think I should mention it anyway in case anyone else has the same problem (which I've observed on two different computers btw).

Best,

CP .

(A quick update; updating my spreadsheet in Gnumeric, as I've just done, works fine in Wary 5.1.1).
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.

This version hasn't been touched since 2004 and I didn't want to upgrade it because its much smaller than the latest etc. If you have a sample file and maybe a step by step list on how you used that file to crash it would help me, I would rather get it to crash here and then compile the latest version and try to crash it here first before going ahead and removing the older one from 2.14X and updating the iso. would save a lot of time.

If anyone has some suggestions for how to implement suspend function for laptops using 214X-top8, I would appreciate any help.

That is the only important thing missing.

A few comments

#4409 Post by Minnesota »

ttuuxxx:

A few comments... I tried a spread sheet....both numeric and alpha data. Saved and brought back.. Running on CD clean. Do not see any issues, except Margin in Print is back to LEFT side. OLD problem... can easily be seen if you do a print preview.

AND.... don't know if it is intentional.. or where you get your build data... but default seems to be zd1211b instead of zd1211rw - Drive for old usb wifi dongle. We have been down this road, and if I was running full time I would build my own with the correct driver. I believe the rw is more common, your decision.

No big deal. As I can fix both of these if need be.

Print Preview in Abiword does not seem to work. Nothing happens if button or file/print preview is pushed.

Is the right click of the desktop supposed to display the MENU or has that been eliminated?

Congrats... you added bubbles and gemgame!

Trust new baby is well and happy....finally getting more sleep? Suspect your winter... hot here...:). Summer.

Change to JWM and all will be back to normal

@ttuuxxx

The dreaded Geany bug is back. Well I catch it if no-one else does.
Settings are not saved, so I cannot get rid of the default view of showing the message bar and side bar. This happened in an earlier version, but then disappeared. No idea why it has re-occurred.

Network manager is working perfectly now for me, using ndiswrapper, and settings are saved.

Hi ttuuxxx, thanks for getting back to me.

I'll have to try it when I get home (I'm posting from Mint at the moment, on a public computer) but, if memory serves, the problem (and the crashes) happen when you press "Enter" to transfer the value you've typed in above the spreadsheet table, to the spreadsheet cell. Everything's fine up until that.

Regards,

Colonel Panic .

I got the .sfs file that Terryphi posted at
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... e2445a6eb8

and put it in the partition that I boot 214x TOP8 from.

Nothing happened when I booted.

So I copied the .sfs file to another computer running Puppy 5.25; it works there.
I used unsquashfs on the other computer, and copied the two extracted directories to this computer, and used mksquashfs.
Then I put the resulting .sfs file in the home partition.
This time when it boots, it does put opera into /opt/ and so forth.
But when I try to run it, it says "Illegal instruction".

Is it a problem with my amateur unsquashing and squashing? Or is Opera 11.50 not able to run on this ASUS P5A with AMD K6-2-450 , under P214X TOP8?

214 6 thru 8 (I haven't tried the earlier versions) work great on my PIII laptop when I run off a CD, but a frugal install on my EXT2 or EXT3 partition terminates the boot with an "Init" error message. What am I missing? I apologize in advance if this is covered earlier in this huge thread.

Hello :)!

Try adding root=/dev/ram0 to your kernel line, e.g.:
rootnoverify (hd0,4)
kernel /puppy_214X/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 pmedia=idehd PKEYS=se
initrd /puppy_214X/initrd.gz

Thanks a million!
Adding "root=...' did the trick, 214x now boots up just fine.
Question: What does adding "root=/dev/ram0" do?

Wow ... a TOP8. Anxious to try it, especially as I have remained with TOP6 up until now due to the wireless issue (I'm 100% wireless at home).

Will download and try on my Thinkpad 600X PIII 450 and post an update.

Cheers to ttuuxxx and the 214X community.

OK, I tried it again at home and it was fine so it might just be an intermittent problem.
