Midnight Sun Pup 002 with 2.6.35.7 and 003 with 2.6.38.4

#1 Post by pemasu »

Midnight Sun Pup is out. My vacation started in nice summer weather beside the lake. I took nice night shot from the downing sun in the boat and decided to utilize the pic. So here is Midnight Sun Pup.

Playdayz and several other people have also joked about my permafrozen Pup names. This name was suggested by Playdayz, only half seriously.
So...Snow Puppy-021 is now Midnight Sun Pup 002. It has 2.6.35.7 kernel.

Midnight Sun Pup 003 has 2.6.38.4 kernel with intel atom optimization, highmem+pae enabled, low latency kernel.

And last but not the least, Latest version is Tmans Remix of Midnight Sun Pup 003. Main sfs is reduced to 190 Mb, Firefox 6.0 as additional sfs in iso.
Outcome, menu styling and application selection has more harmony and artistic look than in my versions. Fantastic work from Tman. Thank you.

I have updated jwm, Icewm themes and also some new backgrounds.

Firefox-5.0 official (update), several new small puppy applications, application updates, bug fixes, Yad added, Umplayer updated and it uses now same Qt libs as VLC and Scribus. So lib cleaning also.
Pidgin and PupShutdown updated.

Smokey01 nice new PH101 Puppy help manual has been included with its own menu entry. Thank you Smokey01 of your hard work.

Otherwise, check Snow Puppy thread about innards.
Gimp, VLC, Umplayer, Pidgin, DeadBeef 0.51, Xorg_High, Firefox-5.0 Official preinstalled.
Filemanagers: Rox, Mc, Thunar, Xfe..so fox libs included.

Iso size 240 Mb, yeah...I know...At least you know who to blame....
And there is now Tmans much smaller version out. Check it.

Thank you of reports. I will replace Firefox with official version or I compile it again with conservative specs. Lets see. Radky posted new Pupshutdown and that I want. Also Pidgin should be updated by Dejan555 anytime.
I will upload new Midnight Sun Pup soon.

I compiled Thunors updated latest gtkdialog. It adds new functions, so the new gtkdialog apps will work in my Puppies alright in the future.
I will add it to the next Midnight Sun Pup also with those above mentioned updates.

May I ask a noob question.

Is Midnight Sun pup compatible with Lupu525 applications? Pets SFS and so on?
I failed to get FF 5 going too.

Loaded SFS-Exec and used that one to load FF4.0 and that worked well.
Opera 11 worked well as SFS too. but Chromium 12 and Chromium 14 started but failed to load pages.

not an ideal solution though

Great name. With a name like that I had to try it . . . 8)
VLC ran OK, Xchat ran OK :)
FF did not load, tried from the command line, then decided to download chrome 12 from quickpet
Did not run.
Menubar disappeared and I could not reboot (had to use ctrl + alt + backspace and reboot)

So I returned to Lucid525 which I have been using of late and the two save files got a little confused . . .
(I think this is being sorted for later woof builds)

Without a browser I have only 10% functionality. The cloud has me . . .

Keep up the great work pemasu - and keep up the great names
It did remind me of the Black Sun philosophy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sun_ ... _symbol%29
but then 'Spot' (Puppy 5.3) can also mean blemish (that meaning had totally escaped me)

About browser problems. I believe that not all Playdayz's compiled browsers works with 2.6.35.7 kernel version. And mine compile was done in PolarPup using best tuning for my intel i5 cpu. So it seem not be compatible with all cpu's.

I will download Firefox official offering and make a pet of it and then upload Midnight Sun Pup 002.

About Lucid Puppy other pets. I believe almost all of them works just fine. Midnight Sun Pup is ubuntu lucid and Playdayz's Lucid Puppies based, using 25.5 woof and quite a lot applications has been updated also.

Graphics driver from Lucid Puppy repos of course does not work because they are compiled for different kernel.

These selfcompiled browsers might cause problems as we have seen.
Seamonkey 2.1 has worked with James C.

Firefox-5.0 official now in woof, also PupShutdown-1.7 and Pidgin-2.9.0.
Gtkdialog3 is now Thunor's latest.
I start package creation now and I will upload Midnight Sun Pup 002 later today.

Now is time to cycle to the falls and take some new pics.

Now is time to cycle to the falls and take some new pics.
Looking forward to those
going off topic . . .

Open the directory/folder with your pics
If you can not see your pics right/click/show thumbnails (or for older Puppys go into options)
Click the + sign in the Rox folder to make thumbnails bigger
Drag the required thumbnail over the mtpaint icon and let go
Pic now in Mtpaint
Image/preferences/interface/mousewheel=scroll
Now you can make the image bigger or smaller with the scroll wheel

OK lets modify
Go to effects/change colours in Mtpaint
Best effects are increase saturation and a bit of gamma (don't go mad)
Too much gamma might need a bit of contrast and try some hue change for otherworldly sunsets
Apply before clicking OK and reset if the effects have gone too far when applied
That should give you pics a little more Puppification

Here is one I did earlier

First pics from today cycling route. The pics are around the trout and rainbow trout falls. They are shallow and good places for fishing. The falls have natural and planted trouts. Rainbow trouts are planted in Finland.

Midnight Sun Pup is now reuploading. I meant to name it 002 but I forget to change the specs, so Midnight Sun Pup 001 it is...again.

Firefox-5.0 official now. Pidgin updated to 2.9.0, Pupshutdown to 1.7 with several improvements. You can now disable the CD removing question from settings. So it reboots or shutdown without extra questions. See Radky's Pupshutdown thread for more information.

Lakeview pic added to the backgrounds, I liked that one.

Gtkdialog3 is now latest Thunor's source code compile. Gtkdialog is now under heavy development. That is great news to all who develops and uses gtkdialog apps and there are so many included in Puppies.

Now it is time to put nets to the lake and cross fingers. My son has got two pike perches with wobbler so far and several pikes also.

I have nice console utility included. It translates words from english to finnish and vice versa. Might support other languages also..You can try it.
It works in console:

Code: Select all

sh-4.1# translate kuha fi en
pike perch
sh-4.1#
Midnight Sun Pup 001 reupload finished.

Chromium 14 announced by Playdayz works. It needed .desktop location fix first, which was explained by DaveS in Chromium 14 thread.

http://smokey01.com/pemasu/Pets/Chromium-14-fixed.pet

Also Opera 11.50 sfs worked: http://terryphillips.org.uk/warystuff/o ... 386opt.sfs

For sfs usual username and password is needed.
