Hi maik.murks, this is good idea for a thread, I just have question about fonts licensing, I scanned through rules and your first posts, but didn't see anywhere or in attached zips/descriptions where you get these fonts from and if they're just freeware or some open font license. I guess it's ok to share them but not sure if it would be ok to put them in puplets and such?
Here's a good font pack put together by pa_mcclamrock:

There are over 6000 free true type fonts here http://www.webpagepublicity.com/free-fonts.html#FreeFonts

Yeah there are free fonts all over the web for download, just remember that "free for personal use" and free as in open source could have different meanings. Most of those free fonts are perfectly legal to download, install on your system, use in your documents, but for redistribution and including in puplets and such would require specific license GPL/OpenFont or else I guess.

I wouldn't think that anyone would want to adds bucket loads of fonts to a distro, I only use a couple of them that are already in puppy,
maybe just the posting of links to online sources would be more appropriate, like in my previous post.

Brilliant idea mike
and thanks for the huge amount of work during the past couple of weeks.
I have downloaded a few of them and will use them as I go along.
When placed in that folder /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF they become available not only in Abiword but in Thunderbird and OO, as well.
Great job!
Just out of curiosity: maik.murks?
Are you German or do you speak German?
If not, then be warned "Murks machen" in German means "to botch things up" in English. So far it doesn't look like it!

Another way to add the fonts is to make a hidden folder /root/.fonts and place them in it, that works also.

Hi dejan555.
I‘m very pleased that you like this thread
Yes, you‘re right, there is nothing I‘ve written about licenses so far. I‘ve forgotten it as I know that the fonts I‘ve posted here are licensed under open source licenses as far as I know. So, I do it now:
All fonts I've posted here should be licensed under open source licenses. In particular these licenses are the following as far as I know.
SIL Open Font License (V1.1) http://scripts.sil.org/OFL
Apache License (V2.0) http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html
No font I've posted here is a ‚payware' font.
The only font, that is something special is the first font, which I've found somewhere while stumbling through the internet as you can read here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=525451#525451 and here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=526046#526046. But nevertheless, this font is no ‚payware‘ font.
Hope that helps.
And thanks for the link to the thread the with the font pack. I like to write a little more detailed answer about this - but in another different and later posting - hope that is OK for you.
Cheers

Hi Geoffrey.
Yes, you‘re right, the way you described - make a hidden directory in /root named .fonts and put the fonts into that directory - is correct. But the main central system directory for TTF fonts in all puppies seems to be /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF in the case you like to have a system-wide availability for your fonts.
But there is another thing. There is no need to really put (means copy or move) the fonts into the fonts directory. It is enough to put a link of the font into the font directory. This method has the charm that you can organize your fonts where you want and how you want to do it. And this method makes some sense if you like to have still an overview of your fonts even if you have more than 20 fonts installed - or more than 50 - or more than 100 - or more than 300 - or more than...
Perhaps it would be a good idea to collect all the different ways in the fourth posting of this thread.
For your earlier postings I like to give you a little more detailed answer, too - probably together with the more detailed one to dejan555 - hope that is OK for you.
Cheers
Maik.Murks
