Hi mick,

Frugal installation of spup 120.50 booted fine using the nouveau driver. Only problem noted to date is that the nvidia driver in the spup ppm section does not work.

Code: Select all

# lspci -nn|grep -i vga
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 8400 GS] [10de:06e4] (rev a1)
# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Slack Puppy, version 120.50

Chip description:
oem: NVIDIA
product: G98 Board - 05610002 Chip Rev

Driver used by Xorg:
nouveau

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: "1280x1024" Depth: Depth 24

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
#
Unfortunately, a full hd installation was not as successful. It booted to a desktop using the nouveau driver, however, there was an error loading the backdrop image and all icons were generic. Mtpaint gives a critical error so I was unable to take a pict. I tried installing pupsnap which appeared to install correctly, but it did not work either. Reinstalled the hd installation with same results so I discontinued testing it.

Cheers,:D

I need everyones help with a problem I am having with Spup-1.00 & 1.20.50. I love to watch internet TV at vettle.com. With Linux you have to download veetle-0.9.17-linux-install.sh and install it as a plugin. I open a terminal in root and type sh veetle-0.9.17-linux-install.sh as the site tell you to. The problem is it should install Veetle Broadcaster Plugin, Veetle TV Core and Veetle TV Player. All it installs is Veetle TV Core.

I have installed it in other version of Puppy and most will let me install all three.
I only have this problem with 4.3.1 and below, Browserlinux based releases and Spup releases.

All help is needed.

Frugal install of spup-120.50 on Dell Inspiron 1100 with the following (unfortunately) graphics chips:

Code: Select all

# lspci -nn|grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device [8086:2562] (rev 03)
Booted directly to working desktop, but ran into black screens whenever X attempts to restart, as usual from newer kernels/xorgs. The "Intel" driver occasionally works but mostly doesn't.

What did work for me is a quick reboot to create a save file before changing anything, then reboot with pfix=nox, run xorgwizard and select vesa. From then on, X restarts reliably and reboots are fine without the pfix=nox phrase.

Simple Network Setop had to be run twice to get a wireless connection - the first time it found no network.

To tame my touchpad (touchypad?) I need the synaptics driver to work.

Code: Select all

# synclient -l
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?
# grep -i synaptic /etc/X11/xorg.conf
	Load "synaptics"
	InputDevice "Synaptics Mouse" "AlwaysCore"
	Identifier "Synaptics Mouse"
	Driver "synaptics"
#
Otherwise looking good with only a casual inspection so far.

Manual frugal install of 120.50 on the old P3 test box.Everything good on initial boot....sound,internet and display (1024x768). But, after running Personalize Settings I was dumped at the root login prompt instead. Ran xorgwizard as normal so it's working now.
More in a few.

I am now posting this from the 2nd pre-beta and wanted to inform you of my experience.
I still got a messed up desktop screen on booting.
I backed out to command line, ran xorgwizard, and selected nv.
After all of it, I was taken back to command prompt and xwin got me a good desktop.
Also, no auto connect for my eth0.
Had to run the wizard.

And....
Tried installing SuperTux2 and after half of creation was installed as to dependencies, and being told all was good, the app would not run.
So that one may be a cross off your compatable list.
Also...
Pa_McClamrock's applications install and run fine if you install the required dependencies that are given.

Also, no auto connect for my eth0.
Once connected, it is not persistent between boots.

Was able to watch a documetary length avi file with the default player. Full screen was not available but it was perfectly acceptable 8)
My correct graphic card is found by the 'wary' (that is what it says) video upgrade wizard but no driver is available apparently , , ,

Xchat seems OK
Firewall icon not appearing on menubar

For a pre alpha . . . running good, several hours use
- no surprises. Browser OK. Yet to decide about Flashblock. Security wise . . . good plan 8)

I got same as James C.

Ok seems like after first boot is Mouse Interface dialogue cause that happen , not firstrun.

And time zone still can not be set correctly.
My fault . I have not set time . After set time is Ok now.

Hi all

   I am in

still autobooting to a garbled desktop, but if I exit to the prompt (alt-ctrl-backspace) I can get a desktop using the vesa driver from xorgwizard (cant get the correct resolution yet, but at least I am in) nv driver will still not load

Tried to download the nvidia driver from ppm but when exiting desktop (from vesa) to prompt (alt-ctrl-backspace) and using the start menu option, I get a frozen black screen. but will keep trying

Thanks for all the hard work mick

hope this helps

With your copying of the attachment does it open at all? What happens if you copy it to the NTFS by command line? I wan tto work out if this is a rox bug or not. It is possible that it is a kernel bug. Eventually I want to update the kernel. As for your internet staying connected issue, over the next week or so I intend to make a package for jemimah's frisbee, be patient though I have much to do :)

Also there are some radeon issues I am aware of. I may modify the report-video to show the product ID to make it easier for testers and give me some more useful data.

I am also considering to add shinobar's pupsave gui so that you can make a pupsave before exiting from X. I belive TazOC has something similar in LHP.

~

James C and withoutpity

Did either of you see one of these messages when dumped to the prompt?
Xorg did not try to start. Unfortunately your hardware seems incompatible with this version of Puppy, try Wary Puppy
or
Xorg did not start. Xorgwizard will now start to see if you can get X. Once you have finished type 'xwin' to sart X
If so I know the problem.

~

For those who don't get the resolution in report-video could you please get a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and attach. Make sure this is straight after bootup and you have not run xorgwizard. If you had to run xorgwizard then you can still post the results but please let me know if you had to.

Here is some code to make it easy:

Code: Select all

# cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log $HOME/Xorg.0.log
#gzip Xorg.0.log
~

bigpup

That is not what the desktop icons should look like. I changed the layout (see pic), I wonder if your burn is ok? Please state what graphics card you are using.

~

Jim1911

Thanks for testing full install. James C reported similar with pre-alpha1, I did put in code that should have solved the generic icon/no wallpaper issue but obviously it failed :? Just now I tried to do a full but I am having a problem with grub4dos.

What is the error for mtpaint? I haven't seen it, but I will recompile the latest mtpaint anyway.

~

Lobster, so you have success on your radeon? The one you gave the snapshot of some days ago? TIA

~

JonT

I think I know the synaptics issue, it depends on evdev, is the evdev module loaded?

~

johnnywinnwer

I normally make deltas, was just a bit late at night. Look out later for deltas.

~

Stripe

It should be possible to load the nvidia xorg driver. Do an lsmod at the console level and see if nouveau kernel module is still loaded, then try to "rmmod nouveau". You may have to edit the xorg.conf in MP. I'm trying to think up the best way to automate this procedure.

~

Thanks everyone

Yes :D
this is my main machine and this card:
ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500
was not working in pre-alpha 1 (tried all sorts including vesa etc)
Now working well enough to use desktop, xchat. browser etc
Before I was getting 'Black Screen Of Death'

Not here, just got the root auto-login screen with a blinking prompt.
Working ok now after I ran xorgwizard .

Will do some full install testing in the next day or two.

Thanks James

~

brief instructions to unload nouveau in first post, I think it's not good with vesa though, seems to be a frame buffer issue with vesa  :(

EDIT: ok, vesa is weird, seems something isn't loading right on first boot. I managed to change to vesa ok after making a pupsave but on first boot it fails(garbled) and the console wont work.
