Alternativeto - alternative software for Linux

#1 Post by muggins »

Came across this site which mentions a lot of alternative software I'd never heard of:

Thank you muggins, always good to find more resources.

Did anyone find a sensible way of navigating that site? I couldn't see a proper index or anything...
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Using site

Site is based on searching
(for alternative software to something you have or you think you want :D )

So a conventional index is not really needed. Just use the Search box.

Perhaps a note of caution: this type of site (and similar other listings) may not be so useful with Puppy - because your choices of alternatives may be constrained by Puppy, which puppy variant you are using, and by what's in the repositories.

You could waste a lot of time.
Probability is that the really good choices (for whatever you need) have already been served up for your delight by the Puppy developers and presenters
- for which let us give thanks.

Check out Tronkel's motto.

disciple, try site:http://alternativeto.net/software/?profile=linux in a Google searchbox.

If there's a specific app, space/'your specific'

e.g. site:http://alternativeto.net/software/?profile=linux /office

you may also need to tag 'for Linux' to the end, as it's a crossOS [win/lin/mac] site

site:http://alternativeto.net/software/?profile=linux /office for linux

dunno why the links won't activate....so I didn't for the last one :?

I only posted the link as, whilst browsing it, I came across software I'd never heard of on freshmeat or softpedia. Whether they're easy to port to puppy, or not, is another question.

e.g. I just entered scribus into the search field, and one alternative which I'd never heard of, is Laidout. Having no printer, I have no use for it, but I agree with Russoodle about having more resources available.

I should have searched the forum first! Disciple requested Laidout, and ttuuxxx responded with a ,pet, here.

The forum software didn't recognize what you put inside the url tags as a URL. I'm surprised it didn't show your entire post as blank. That's usually what it does when someone tries to show an improper URL.

OK thanks Flash

I modified your emboldening to show the last link fully

weird....URLs that don't appear to be URLs, but which work....?

Perhaps John M has been tweaking scripts...?
