spup-121.02 pre-alpha3 based on 13.37 Subject description: latest slackware packages 2011-05-26, latest woof |
|
Well a 3rd pre alpha is done
Firefox-5-beta1
http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/spup/pet_packages-spup/firefox-5.0b1-i686-spup.pet 15M
NOTE that "fido" (restricted user) is implemented, I recommend not to use fido!
http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/spup/latest/spup-121.02.iso K2.6.35 (.13)
Patched with Iguleders version patch because it's LTS. Using jemimah's DOTconfig from fluppy. This is the main version
http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/kernel-2.6.35/ Kernel source and stuff
~
http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/spup/latest/spup-121.01.iso This is the 'dodgy' 2.6.37.6 version. Test/use at your peril!. One advantage is that it has nvidia drivers available. kernel source <-- http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/kernel-2.6.37.6/
DEVX <-- http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/spup/devx_spup_121.02.sfs (change the last digit if needed )
Checksums..
a9fb657a2ac76849b37f88f6a7ddbada spup-121.01.iso
e9d938d7eae6e6688c9ebdc0f873fa21 spup-121.02.iso
99da478b7d65619e53bd13c33ec18e7f devx_spup_121.02.sfs
LOTS OF BUGS
-flsynclient methinks
-usb stick booting (note to pemasu, I think it's a woof bug)
-first run locale change.. "OK" button is off screen for some, hit "enter".
-gparted (needs an update.. or zigbert's frontend to cfdisk )
SOME BUGS FIXED
-hopefully Xorg to some degree
-full installation
NOTE:
If you want KDE get it from PPM, it's large, and also needs *.csh files deleted from /etc/* to work almost properly (SFS soon)
THERE are some surprises
Known issues
*abiword rendering is garbage
*chromium based browsers may or may not work
*PPPOE is updated, needs a test
*inherited woof bugs, usb for one
Fixes
*some big xorg fixes including a full xorg.conf and synaptics support (tho you may not notice, and there is probably more to do)
*keyboard fr/azerty sk/qwertz
*xchat
*seamonkey
*add transmission lite
*start to implement small screen fixes, icons
*devx deps
*ppp
*attempt for pppoe
*gnumeric
Xorg has had a lot of work done to it, if you have issues please report.. I am expecting nvidia issues.
To do
*recompile heaps of stuff, bring stuff up to date, slackbuilds are good place to start. Major libraries should be kept inline with slackware versions. Slackware keep many sources with patches which may be handy.
*fix guis for small screens, they are horrible (status=started)
*decide what icon layout is best.. maybe someone can hack something together for small screens, they are way too cluttered with heaps of icons. (status=started)
*translate... no need to reinvent the wheel here, many of shinobar's wary quickset programs will fit right in.
* fix quickpet for spup
* integrate with olpc work
Extra pets
PPM for spup is working BUT not all packages are compiled for this version
Other notes.
nouveau is back, seems to be better now, at least for me, getting HW acceleration. If it doesn't work for you try nv in xorgwizard and report issues please.
Radeon later model users may have to boot with 'modeset=0' on the kernel line.
To unload nouveau
*boot pfix=nox
*edit xorg.conf in mp (at console) Code: | mp /etc/X11/xorg.conf |
*fine "nouveau" and replace with nv or nvidia
*type xwin to start X
Things to test
*gparted
*grub
*grub4dos
*full installs
*usb
*ntfs/windows partitions
*keyboard
Important note
If you compile/make pets for this version I would like to stick with a naming convention
*a normal script name-versionnumber (hyphen delimited)
*compiled app name-versionnumber-arch (like new2dir does.. please separate DOC,DEV,NLS)
*driver name-`uname -r`-versionnumber
Please, no hyphens in the name, use underscores.
Please post pet.specs if possible.
Optionally you can append "-spup" to the version number, this is recommended. Also, please compile i486, unless the app requires i686 then that's ok, some multimedia apps.
eg: seamonkey-2.1b2-i486-spup
Have fun
***Disclaimer.. I didn't make the first boot image! (though I used it! Looks nice tho, sorry Pat, but we are pre-alpha, this is NOT official)

canon MP490, but I didn't try too hard and I have a number of pets, maybe a different one would work but the one I tried worked in spup100, maybe a libusb thing.

I tested my MP490 with Patriot's original driver and it worked fine. I then installed my pixma scanner driver (which contains the libusb-1.0 stuff) along with Peasyscan and it worked too.
If you boot spup with the MP490 already ON, you get the stupid red dots. But it still works.

Thanks for this leet pre alpha
Tried the spup leet on my old computer and it booted up OK and I got a connection (it displayed my password rather than using (****) stars
So could use that as a test machine . . .
The graphic card in the old computer is a "Savage* PCI (sorry not a good report)
My Athlon which has a radeon I tried everything, vesa, tweaking, booting options etc and could not get a graphic resolution that worked.
This is the non working graphic as reported by Lucid:
Code: | VIDEO REPORT: Lucid Puppy, version 525
Chip description:

product: RV710 01.00
Driver used by Xorg:
Video mode used by Xorg:

Hi 01micko
Your new spup full iso booted to desktop successfully on my HP550 laptop frugal install
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GME965/GLE960 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a12] (rev 0c)
Couple of problems
FlSynchclient does not work - says a Synaptics driver is missing - so I can't scroll or setup the touchpad - seem to remember this was a problem in early lupu's
the clock is wrong - displaying -22hours on real time
urxvt gave a bash warning about not being able to set locale
my wifi had its usual "die after a time problem" so I've loaded the lupu stay-connected pet and this seems to be working after a reboot
on the plus side, pnethood connected lightning fast
Cheers
Peter

Installed Conky from Salix repo, shows missing libs but it's working.
However, MTPaint screenshot is not.....launches,but after picking a delay before taking the shot, nothing.
EDIT: SeaMonkey just crashed when submitting this post. And I never have browser crashes.

Even though you recommended not too, I installed Mesa from the Brainwave repo....
# glxgears
2458 frames in 5.0 seconds = 491.523 FPS
2450 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.611 FPS
2422 frames in 5.0 seconds = 484.376 FPS
2396 frames in 5.0 seconds = 479.082 FPS
2166 frames in 5.0 seconds = 432.900 FPS
2374 frames in 5.0 seconds = 474.197 FPS
2509 frames in 5.0 seconds = 501.645 FPS
2263 frames in 5.0 seconds = 451.322 FPS
No problems with detecting my usb flash drives, no problem with timezone...... well, timezone is staying as "US Central" but must reset time every reboot.

SD Card successfully auto mounted when inserted into internal multi card reader
Streaming video from youtube.
Gnome Mplayer works
epdfview does not work - complains about libpoppler-glib.so.4 - I symlinked that from libpoppler-glib.so and epdfview worked.

I have experienced a great deal of frustration with chromium-browser version 12 in different puppies lately.
Overall: Looking pretty good so far.

Hi mick
Download it now, when it comes to the naming/posting the pet.specs for compiled packages, Is a pain, I never get it right, lol And things like posting the pet.specs, well that's no bad for single files, but If I'm compiling an app that takes like 6 deps, Thats a very big pain to compile and stop post the spec, then compile again and post the spec, etc etc etc etc. I'll give it a try.
On another note, will this turn into puppy 6?
Also I haven't booted with it yet but are you open to a few substitutions if this has the deps needed? like ditch Epdf for Evince since its 10 times better at rendering and renders a lot of extra formats, like SVG,comic etc, really would only work if gconf is included in spup, I guess I'll find out in a min from now

dawsnboy- a symlink will fix it, for now, ln -s /usr/lib/libpoppler-glib.so.6.0.0 /usr/lib/libpoppler-glib.so.4. That's a stop gap measure, needs a epdfviewer recompile
James C, yep seamomnkey needs a recompile
peebee, there is definitely a timezone bug, investigating, will look into fsynclient
Lobster, can you run the command in the first post on your radeon? Any puppy will give the same result.
ttuuxxx , the pet.specs isn't as important as the naming You can append "-spup" to the version too if you like, would help some users I guess. I don't know if this will even go official, don't care so I can't say if it will be 5, 5.3, 6 or whatever... oh and tuuxxx, I'm open to suggestions, all depends on size and functionality, you know, bang 4 byte

Hi mick
I don't see gconf, hmmmm A lot of gtk apps these day use Gconf and it should really be a part of puppy, things like Gcalctool which is a way better calculator than Galculator, Evince, Metacity, etc etc.
I'll compile some basics and see what you think. Personally I would included it.
Oh ya one nice surprise is seeing Parcellite on at bootup, that just makes life so much nicer great job on that, I like the background, basic yet effective and clear.
