Myke, marco07 et al. Thank you of your reports. There is something wrong in that reuploaded version.
The keucr does not give that error for me. Yes, my laptop started to use keucr for my sd card reader when it was available.
Myke, it would help if you could track which kernel module is behind your usb mouse.
Good news. Unetbootin failed for me also so now I can debug usb unetbootin myself.
I start debuggineg immediately systematically now. First notice, my ext4 had errors when I ran fsck. It just can be that the build was corrupted.

Myke, The kernel pet is for woof building. You cant use it just by installing it. I am not fan of kernel switching. I will support woof building method only.

I believe atm the problem was with build, not the kernel per se.
But corrupted file system. Damn. It means that the kernel compile can be corrupted also. Alright, I will do it clean way. I will recompile the kernel also and make new pet of it. Fortunately I have the building Ice Puppy still intact, so everything is ready for new compile. Kernel sources, specs so it just take time, but not effort much.

Probably I will make fresh new Ice Puppy-005 build after all these procedures has been done. It will take some time.

I will take the reuploaded version out from ftp server now, so that none else will have problems.
Well well, RHE releases are like that.

I know that development could go also so that developer tests profoundly before releases the build. But I just like it this way. When people debugs at the beginning there always will be found bugs which would have been unnoticed. I have already fixed some puppy bugs based on forum feedback.

Compiling kernel now again. Based on reports in this thread and the 2.6.38.3 kernel thread I have gone through all the kernel specs and modified the previous specs. Just for fun of it and also to maybe make it more hw friendly.f
I found also the bug in my miscellaneous filesystem section. Aufs was compiled static, not as module as it should be.
Probably reason to that usb nonbooting failure.

Hi pemasu,

could you tell me please, where is the ISO of Ice Puppy-004?
I've only found the DEVX of Ice Puppy-004.

Thanks

Maybe still uploading.
But did you see the icepuppy-005 directory? to be filled

Pesamu, sorry for the report. Somehow by trying to update the save file all the problems arose. I guess I don't understand the workings of the save file and the kernel (which I thought would take care of the mouse and the card reader). Starting Ice-Puppy 4 w/o the save file has eliminated the problems with the mouse and the card reader.

I modprobed coretemp and installed xsensor, which both work fine.

Myke. I thought so. Your problem was so difficult to pinpoint to the kernel per se. I even suspected you had used savefile of the previous build.
But anyway. Going through kernel specs made me add more support.
The usb booting problem is still a little confusing for me.
But my compiling and building platform is now good.
Next thing is to redownload woof and start from the fresh woof, if usb booting problem still exists with the new kernel. Now Squashfs, Aufs, Initramfs are surely ok. I dont much use usb booting, got even a working stick from my son.
Tmpfs usage in usb booting and problems with it arises my suspicion to the woof platform than to the kernel.
But lets see.

About IcePuppy-004. It is history anyway. I removed it. It worked fine for me, but there really was some kernel specs wrong.

I havent remembered to emphatize that testing new kernel and build, ALWAYS start with FRESH install. IF everything is ALRIGHT, then use savefile, but dont report bugs caused by savefile of the other kernel version and build version. If it works, fine. If it does not, too bad.

pemasu:
I went ahead and burned a CD of 004. Installed 004 (frugal) from live CD on my Thinkpad R60. The followings are issues I have encountered so far:
- No battery icons on the system try
- Flash video streaming gets interrupted and eventually stalled. Best way to test this is to run one of the highlight news item, with a little camera at the end of its title, on CNN web site.
- The lap top has 4gigs memory, still shows 3.??. No big deal, just FYI.
I thought I'd better let you know about these before the 005 release.
Will be testing 005 ASA uploaded.
Thanks!

Marco07. That is ok. Ice Puppy-004 is history now.
Ice Puppy-005 under testing now. Posting from usb unetbootin and no 005 sfs in my hdd. So no possibility of wrong detection and booting from hdd.
It detects usb booting when you ADD pdev1=sdbX in my case pdev1=sdb1 to the kernel row. For some it can be sdc or sdd also. Depends on in what letter your usb stick is detected.
I really dont know yet why pmedia=usbflash does not work.

And this is definetely Highmem and PAE enabled and with Intel Atom optimization.

Lsmod shows that modules are loaded. Sorry this long paste, but it is for reference for me also.

What about this one then. Does that has something that help get my fan
and thermal or is that kind of out of question for this kernel?
Yes sorry this is in snowpup5 based on 513

Nooby. I have acer laptop. Fan and thermal works for me. I get cpu core temp nicely. Also Acer Aspire One had them working.
As you can see above on my list , modules fan, thermal and thermal_sys are loaded on my above listing.

Nooby, on your listing thermal_sys is not loaded. That is the essential module for working cpu temp - fan control.

What version are you using nooby. You should try the newest 005.

And it NEEDS pdev1=sdXX kernel row parameter for usb booting.

Nooby. Thermal info and usage for fan control has been transferred to the thermal sys filesystem. Thermal_sys is the kernel module which is used to produce that information. You will not find that module in any other puppies. It is first time used in Ice Puppies and in derivatives made by original kernel announcer. He has thread under Puppy Projects.
Thermal_sys module was the reason lm-sensors, libsensors, gatotray, xsensors were needed to get graphical or numerical info of the cpu temp.
Cpu temp info goes hand with hand with fan control.
Kernel 2.6.38 does not anymore show cpu temp info or create fan control old way.
Nooby, there is no use to check thermal_sys from puppies using older kernel. You wont find it.
This thread tries to be testing thread for Ice Puppy. Information here is not general and cannot be used universally. Also testing puppies using older kernel with information from here is not always useful.

Oaky but that means that Acer D250 is different from your Acer and I also have a D255 I can test on and that one most likely are different too.

I tested ice5 and that one failed to get usb mouse but I should ahve tested without the pupsave from ice4 so I do it again just in case that solve it.

Yes I respect your thread I only wanted to know why it fails on mine if it works on yours. the pdev1 thing loaded 8 cardreaders I think

Nooby. Do not use savefile from the older Ice Puppy. You get trouble and I get bug report which is not due to nonworking kernel but incompatible savefile. These builds are quite different in this stage.

Yes sorry I wrote above that I forgot you wanted fresh and so I deleted it and now I am writing from a totally fresh start and no pupsave yet and now I have the sys
thermal_sys 9909 4 fan,video,thermal,processor

Does that look normal then
gatotray show 26 C for temp but Fan run like mad and the computer is more hot than usual.

There should be small red thermometer in your tray. Move mouse over it. It gives info from tool tip. The app is called gatotray. Thanks to Beem for finding that nice tray app.
Also in console: #sensors give you thermal information if it works.
If you get values which sound right, you are closer for normal fan control.

To check if your hw can be regocnized, run in console sensors-detect and hit enter until you get through all questions. It wont harm your comp to do that. Read also what sensors are detected.

From tempestuous post when acerhdf was announced to control acer aspire one fan.

Quick HOWTO:
load the module with this command

Code: Select all

modprobe acerhdf
Fan control now needs to be enabled with this command

Code: Select all

echo enabled -n > /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/mode
Alternatively, you could enable fan control at the same time you load the module, by adding "kernelmode=1" to the command, as such

Code: Select all

modprobe acerhdf kernelmode=1
Once enabled, you will now probably hear the fan turn off. The acerhdf driver will, by default, turn the fan on when the temperature gets up to 67C, then turn the fan off when the temperature gets down to 62C.
If you prefer something different, say 63C on, 58C off, then you should load the module like this

Code: Select all

modprobe acerhdf fanon=63000 fanoff=58000
Whenever the acerhdf module is loaded, you can check your temperature with this command -

Code: Select all

cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp

James C. Good to know. I get nice low battery consumption with powertop.

I uploaded kernel stuff and kernel source sfs also
For those who would like to do kernel hopping or compile drivers.
Kernel pet is designed for woof building. To swap kernels, you need to extract it and use the files manually.
I havent done that, but James C is real expert on that.
I still believe that woof building is the right way so that there is no side effects. Of course result can be fine in manual switching, but you never know.
Anyway, this kernel could be useful for next spup with new kernel. Just a tip for James C.
