If you had taken the time to read a few posts a bit earlier in the thread
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 707#515707

it would have been obvious that highmem didn't work in 003.

IcePuppy-003 and 004 RHE release Really Highly Experimental

#64 Post by Billtoo »

Here's a frugal install of icepup04 on my acer desktop.

Summary
Computer
Processor 4x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Memory 8310MB (188MB used)
Operating System Puppy Linux 0.00
User Name root (root)
Date/Time Thu 21 Apr 2011 08:08:27 PM EDT
Operating System
Version
Kernel Linux 2.6.38.2 (i686)
Compiled #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Apr 21 22:44:43 GMT-8 2011
C Library GNU C Library version 2.11.1 (stable)
Default C Compiler GNU C Compiler version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5)
Distribution Puppy Linux 0.00

I can't install the proprietary video driver on this pc or the hp
without the kernelsources.sfs but it's no big deal if it's a lot of
work to provide it.I have snowpuppy 16 on both computers and can use
that, also several other pups and dogs :)

Back on the multi-session DVD on the Quad.Everything was saved to DVD from first session as intended.
Can confirm that Quickpet only downloads some packages, installed Chromium but no go with Pwidgets.

Looks pretty good here with 4 gb, no sense in my upping my ram....Billtoo seems to have that covered. :)

To try to discover the impact of a PAE kernel on the more typical Puppy hardware, I dug another old computer out of the closet and did 2 frugal installs with 003 and 004.Using 003 right now.Have already rebooted and created a save file.

I need to do other unfinished jobs for awhile. But Thank you of your reports. It looks like Intel Atom and Highmem combo has been accepted warmly.
Quickpet bug. I believe it might be just missing database files in /root/.packages. Go to the Puppy Package Manager and Update database now in the second page of PPM. I got quickpet working with updating files.
I remember now that I removed older Puppy database files from woof so that there would less files to choose when I did woof builds again and again. LOL.
Could someone test this and report that I can inform the fix in the first page.

Highmem + PAE. Yes, it uses about 20 Mb more RAM. That is why it is good that there is 486 cpu version without Highmem + PAE. If you have 4 Gb
or more RAM, there is no problem with + 20 Mb usage.

Billtoo. I will upload the kernel sources quite soon. Need to do something else first.

James C. Thank you of your tireless testing with several hw. It looks like the builds are quite usable.

Gcmartin. I knew about that hostname and rox bug. I have made the pet of 01mickos fix for it earlier.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 777#509777

I just didnt remember to update it to the woof. Fixed. Will be implemented through woof in next builds. Thank you of finding that out.
To fix it. Install the pet from above link.
Anyway that bug does not have effect if you dont change your default hostname from puppypc to something other.

To get core temp on the tray, I remade rcrsn51 core temp pet. I removed those libs and bins which are already included. Nothing changed in scripts.
It shows only temp of 2 cores on my 4 core laptop. But anyway. It seems to work that much.

For the moment I use gatotray
I have tested rsrcn51's pet also (in Lucid).
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Thanks Beem. I compiled that gatotray in Ice Puppy. It makes symlink to the /root/Startup. So remove it if you dont want to autostart it.
In that case you need to launch it manually in console: #gatotray

So now there are already 4 different cpu core temp showing apps.
Next we need to poll which one to include in more stable version of Ice Puppy. LOL.

I have to admit I like gatotray immediately. It shows core temp, cpu usage and cpu speed in mouse tool tip. Really nice.
Well, if rcrsn51 core temp pet would show which cpu governing is used, it would be more useful. Now it shows only if on demand governor is used or not.

I am testing ice4 now :)
Bsad news Zigberts Pwidgets report Temperature 0 and No fans in usage.
confirmed by this
Sensors in menu > system > Hardware info refuse to show anything.
Fan is not running only the Harddisk as when I listen with ear to the case

Gatetray? still show 26 Celsius despite CPU goes up to 60% usage due to the flash on Murga page.
Is that not very unrealistic?

I try to do the cli thing and system too.
cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
26800

Which seems to not be the true figure because it does not change by usage of cpu.

So what was it I had to do to get the thermal thing going?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Nooby. I think you have to figure that out. Cpu temp shows fine for me.

I have already posted in the thread before, that Hardinfo does not show cpu temp anymore. I believe you have read the thread.
I think the same goes with Pwidgets.

I wont do anymore core temp debugging in this phase. It works for me. If there is some missing module, I can compile that. If somebody figures out how to help you, it would be really helpful.

Hi pemasu

JFYI - running ice-004 on my old Acer TM-243LC laptop
has 256mb ram and a 2.5Ghz celeron proc. 800mb swap parttition.

running live - no pup_save and it runs very well.

attatched report for hardinfo and a png of desktop.

as you may already know, I really like your snow/ice puppy's
also use them on my asus 701SD netnook - very nice on that too.
512mb ram and the celeron proc. no swap.

Thanks for doing all you do for us - very much apprecitated.

Very best regards - Ray
