theWord Bible software Subject description: A fine Windows program that is simple to install on linux using Wine as of 05/05/11 |

Subito Piano wrote: | Forgive me if this was already addressed, but has anyone tried TheWord? This is the only Bible study I have seen that is substantively better than e-sword, BibleTime, Xiphos, etc. I mean, it's not simply that i "prefer" it, this program really has MUCH more packed in it. It easily installs under WINE, no fuss, no muss. Very customizable, maps, Greek/Hebrew, even BOTH the KJV and the HCSB with Strong's links, etc. Definitely worth a look.
Sorry if i was unclear -- it has many other translations plus commentaries; i meant that unlike most programs that only index the KJV to Strong's this also indexes the Holman Christian Standard Version to Strong's -- of course, it has the usual ESV, NET, and many other translations as well.
Do post back your thoughts after you try it! | Subito Piano has discovered a fine Windows Bible program that rivals e-Sword.
I have downloaded it and given it a test run. It did install perfectly using Lucid 5.2 with green_dome's latest Wine. It runs fine, however, the Basic resources are limited. Just as e-Sword, the program's feature to update itself and to download additional resources does not work. Therefore, I used Vista, as it is a Windows program and it refused to install. So I was unable to see those features work. EDIT: It does work under Windows Vista, however the "Compact" installation feature has to be selected in the installer.
The Word's web site has a wealth of additional module resources available to download, both free and paid content, some of which are not available elsewhere. I downloaded my desired free content, each module is a separate exe file (as they are in e-Sword) and installed easily using Wine.
In my opinion, e-Sword has lost it's place to theWord. I now use theWord (more than e-Sword) along with the linux Bibletime and Xiphos programs. These four make an extremely powerful Bible Study application.
Subito Piano, Thank you for this find,
Jim
EDIT: INSTALLATION TIPS:
03/05/11 post wrote: | Just some hints for newbys to assist installation of theWord Bible software. I have found theWord compares very well to and even surpasses e-Sword. Also, it offers some additional free software that is not available with e-Sword.
1. Download and install Wine. Green_dome's latest version 1.3.14 works great.
2. Download theWord and any additional modules that you desire to install. To install theWord or additional modules, just double click on the the downloaded file.
3. Since this is a Windows program running under Wine, you need to locate theWord.desktop file in order to run it. That file is normally in the /root/Desktop folder and you can click on this file to run the program.
4. If you want theWord to show up in your menu, the included desktop file must be edited since it is different from the normal desktop file that is recognized by the puppy menu system.
5. The attached theWord-3.2.1.pet provides the edited version that works on my system. It places an executable file theword.sh in /usr/bin, a proper theWord.desktop file in /usr/share/applications, and the icon in /usr/share/pixmaps. Now, theWord is found under menu>Personal>Personal information, and if you desire to have it on your desktop, copy theWord.desktop from /usr/share/applications to your desktop.
Enjoy,
Jim

Hmm -- I am using version 3.2.0.1102 and had no problems installing anything. Perhaps i missed something -- what exactly did not work under Wine? Do you mean HELP>DOWNLOAD ADD-ON MODULES? Yeah, i never tried that, i downloaded everything from the website. I haven't discovered anything that doesn't work, at least using it this way. I'm wondering what we're missing?
Thanks.

Thanks. | Sorry, I didn't make myself clear, as stated, theWord installed perfectly with Wine using Lucid 5.2. However, under Help, the feature 'Download add-on modules' did not work so the additional resources have to be obtained from theWord web site. Strangely, an installation problem occurred with Windows Vista instead of linux.
It's impressive, I've now expanded my linux Bible Study OS to include all four Bible programs: Bibletime, e-Sword, theWord, and Xiphos.
Thanks,
Jim

Quote: | Strangely, an installation problem occurred with Windows Vista instead of linux. | It turns out that Windows Vista will not allow theWord to be installed in the c;/Programs directory so it causes the installation file to quit responding. However theWord installation has an option to install to a 'Compact (Single Folder)' to a new c:/theWord directory. This installation option works fine and is even better because the program saves files only under the installation folder.
TheWord Bible program is a fine program that works great under linux and provides e-Sword some serious competition.

There's a bit of to-do over BibleAnalyzer, i think in the Ubuntu forums. I was maybe the only one who couldn't install it under Wine -- ?!?! Might be worth a look, not to divert this thread -- but i can't comment on it except i know some others really liked it.
I can't resist a swipe here -- does ANYTHING work correctly under Vista?

Most Windows software works OK in Vista, however IMO Vista is crap, but I still need it occasionally. XP was much better.

when I used the .pet that Jim has provided, I ended up with e-sword under "Document" and The Word under "Personal". In asking Jim how to correct this, he has given me this answer (and has rightly pointed out that such information should be public.
Using an éditer, open /usr/share/applications/esword.desktop & théword.desktop. Copy categories from from theword to esword . Save change & run fixmenus in console.
Thanks again Jim.

Source of word modules Subject description: Good stuff! |
|
Hi
David Cox, who used to package a lot of stuff for e-sword, has now switched allegiance to the word & is conversting his stuff to word modules:
http://www.davidcox.com.mx/twm/
He gives his reasons for the change at:
http://www.davidcox.com.mx/twm/compareesword.html
The word website also has stuff for converting e sword modules ( & other formats) to word modules. See importer tools on page listed below:

I have done this using wine

Hi Guy,
Thanks for the information and links about David Cox's switch to theWord. His comparision is informative and definitely worth reading.
I've also found theWord to be a more versatile program and have been using it more. However, both are fine resources.
Thanks,
Jim

Bones | Hi Bones,
Thank you for the heads up, it's only been up a few days. I've just downloaded Version 4 and it updated fine using just the update binary. There is a long list of enhancements and bug fixes.
Also, another great puppy, TaZoc's Lighthouse 64 5.15F, is now out which provides a nice installer for theWord. Those with 64 bit capability need to check this one out. It's his best ever.
Jim
