Nooby, I'm actually all for a 4.3.x bugfixed maintained version, and frankly don't care what it is called if it were actually available. I was being somewhat rhetorical, so please forgive the tone. It was more to draw attention to the topic than anything else.

I hope that something will come of this.

To be honest the ideal for me would simply be a completion of the first "Official 4.3.2" (v3) which has been very stable for a year for me, and reportedly others.

As far as I know it offers just what was promised: conservative main line traditional puppy, with updates, running on a range of old and new hardware, bugfixed, stable, using the official and popular kernel versions.
Well Barry mentioned I could release a 4.3.2 bug fix release and doing so will buy some time for 5 series to be released in about 5 weeks, At this point in time that is what I'm prepared to do and have started. I'll spend maybe 1-2 days on this and I won't be taking over 4 series right now but I'll build a 4.3.2 bug release based on 4.3.1.
The only thing lacking as far as I remember it was that xvesa needed fixing.

It seems that if it could just be "completed". we'd have just what is being asked here.

The problem is that the desire to "improve" gradually sneaks in over the desire to correct bugs, and off we go into a new kernel, and new applications, and new support libraries, new browsers and effectively, a new puplet. Yet another doggy with new fleas.

It's understandable, fixing bugs isn't glamorous and always suggests newer more exciting apps. But frankly new Firefox or Opera, or alternate app pups are a dime a dozen. I know -- I wrote one myself a while back.

Why a 4.3.x bugfix edition? I don't want a new puppy I gotta house train to fit in again. I work at my job every day with Puppy Linux, and my wife does as well, I want a well mannered standard dog, with a recent flea bath, and all shots.

There's always a CD RW available for some alternative puplet if the urge arises to experiment. But the HD is always going to aim grub first at a 4 series puppy, day in, day out.

Vtpup sadly the Canadian puppy repository has shut down so no V3 seems available

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=54082

V3 seems older than V2 below. April instead of September. Mayb ehe updated the older one later.

but I did find this one. Have you tested this one?
4.3.2-SCSI 2.6.30.5 full older modem support posted Sep 18 2010

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 886#451886

Seems to be V2 then? What did TTuuuxxx change in V3 that is not fixed in this older one? I ahve a kind of pseudo scsi so that maybe works. I test it.

Sadly it has SeaMonkey in it. It should be like Lupu. That one have Quickpet and can chose the browser and not be dependent on what the Dev prefer.

Nope, that's the whole confusion I was talking about.

There are two very different 4.3.2's in existence. The one formerly on .ca (4.3.2 v3 also known as "Official 4.3.2) is the one I use and wish was finished.

The "newer" one you refer to as v2 etc. is a different animal altogether with different kernel, apps, etc, and many bugs mentioned in the thread. Also unfinished. I'm not interested in this one.

The earlier "Official" one is still available for those interested, or users currently running it and who need the original ISO again, here:

http://www.lamiaworks.com.au/puppy_isos.html

about half way down that page as:

puppy432_v3.iso

checksum is 71aea85e9fd805b7e6d02ea3baa3d0df

Catdude, has also just helped me out in using that one, as he has indicated how to use an earlier devx (from 4.3.1) with it. So it is still very viable, from my point of view (unless you need xvesa)

I wonder if, Ttuxxx no longer wants to work on this one, if someone else with the devel skills might take it over in true Linux communal fashion, and finish it with a working xvesa?

Edit after testing three versions of puppy 432

Even the one you did recommend. None of the managed to give me internet while Fluppy does, Puppeee does Lupu does and many others does. Wary does give me internet. Lighthouse Puppy gives me internet.

So I fail to support that we go back to 431 or use 432 until that is solved. And to have to shut down and pull the plug to repair that it failed to make use of the LAN card is too much to expect a newbie to figure out. Took me a very long time to find that trick.

My older text
I did not have access to that one. You could have linked to it :)

I tested two others those I did link to and both of them failed to get internet on my Acer D250 and both failed to play Mp4 and both of them failed to show 1024x768 which Lupu does they showed 1024x600 which logically is correct but not what I as user told it to use.

The worst thing with one ofthese two was that it turned off the Lan card so that SnowPuppy could not use the LAN either.

So I had to fall back on shutting down and taking out the power plug to the socket so the RAM could forget what the faulty Puppy has told it to do to shut down the LAN.

Are you sure that the one you have there can get to internet on my gear?

If you really want to know if it works on modern Netbooks then I am willing to try.

Edit. I go test it now to find out. Wish me good luck :)

I should look but my memory tell me that both Fluppy and LHP are based on puppy431 so are they not good enough. Why do you want plain 431 is not Fluppy plain enough? What is so bling bling too much about that one?

nooby, I don't recall that this thread was opened to help you find a particular distro to suit your Acer netbook.

Rather it was opened to discuss a proposal to encourage work on a current debugged stable puppy4.3.1.

Saying you don't think 4.3.1 (or 4.3.2) should be worked on by someone interested in doing so because Fluppy works better on your netbook makes no sense.

Use Fluppy or any of the alternatives and ignore 4.3.1 refinement if you don't like that version by comparison. It's a big world.

And for those of us who have video cards/chips that require xvesa, the lack of support makes this version a no-starter.

Exactly why I'd like to see it fixed and finished. That's the point.

I had hoped that someone who had the skills(I do not) would step up to plate and fix it. It appears that all too often the Puppy devs abandon their creations at the point they are close to "working out of the box".

I kid BigMike``, the creator of Bruno and ThinkLinux that there are so few posts about them because they do work out of the box....but perhaps many Puppy users would rather fiddle and diddle with the OS, rather than use it for computational chores.

It sure make sense to take up that general Puppy 431 has abandon the new computers.

If Jemimah and Pemasu and others are able to use Puppy 431 on my Computer then that is very relevant due to Acer being one of the more common computer AFAIK they also has Packard Bell and them are well sold too. So it is not only relevant it is right on.

Sure you could plug for Puppy 431 if you add the warning that it should not be tried on some of the Acer computers with small screen and ATOM CPU

But I can set this thread to not follow but I am not off topic I am right on.

PS I did set it on not follow now So you have to PM me if you want to add something that I can read.

I've been running 4.31 as the "stable" install on my old P3 test box since it was released. I haven't had any trouble upgrading any packages I wanted. Right now this install has Firefox 4.0, SeaMonkey 2.0.13 and Opera 11.10.... and PuppyBrowser still works too. :)
Don't run 4.31 all the time because I'm testing , but it works when I need it too. Solid as a rock.

Since they were mentioned too, I run 4.32 v3 on my main Linux box and since I don't need xvesa it's been solid as well. I do use it every day.

Guess we'll see where this goes....

remember folks,

that although whodo (warren) "wrangled" 431 he did it for barryK as barry wanted to branch off from puppy and "retire".

214X is still allive and running because ttuuxxxx has been willing to keep its control.

IF, someone is willing to take 431 to the next step, I'm sure there will be some help around, but realize you will need to comitt to at least a year to 18 months breathing, thinking and dreaming puppy.

Can be done as all those involved in the various puppies out there can testify.

scsijon,

whodo "wrangled" 4.2.1 NOT 4.3.1.

Barry was back in charge of 4.3.1

Will the LuPu packages install in 4.3.1 as is, or did you modify them?

I haven't really tried any Lucid Puppy packages in 4.31,though I suspect some would work.I'm cautious, if there's a pet I'm not sure will work I usually grab the trusty cd,boot pfix=ram and find out. If it works it goes into the install,if not Puppy is running in ram and nothing is messed up.

I generally grab the plain deb, usually do a little tweaking to get the menu correct, and make a pet.Just made a pet of SeaMonkey 2.0.13 out of the tar.bz2 from their site.

Wary was designed specifically for this, and BarryK has built an alternate version of Wary 5.1.1 (the latest) with kernel 2.6.30.5 (the 4.3.1 kernel).
He did not offer this kernel with previous Warys, and he might not do it in the future.
You can get it here.

I still think That whoever does decide to take on such a project with Bug fixes and allowing for newer apps to be installed. a pet that updates bug fixes sounds the best option. can someone who may know if it is possibl let us know adn also start work on such a thing. then anyone with teh origional 431 or 431 baised pup can install a pet and have teh fixes etc.

"Older" is a relative term.

I do expect that Wary will run fine on PCs a couple of years old, say built in 2008 or earlier.
