Hi pemasu.
I just installed old 8GB SSD drive in my laptop.
1.
I installed 015 with pmedia=ataflash in extlinux.conf. Is it right for ssd drives? There is no more frugal option in universal installer?
I choose CF disk from the list.
2.
How to speed up SSD? I foud flashfire for windows and nothing for LInux.
Here, http://flashfire.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=125
they say:
"IIRC, the functionality of flashfire is basically built into the ext4 file system (and ext3 with the writeback option).
Just install with the ext4 file system (ubuntu 9.10 does by default) and you're good to go."

-why snowypuppy installer reject ext4 partition?

-if ext4 is not possible, how to use writeback in ext3?

-I foud also this. sudo gedit /etc/fstab
Ubuntu uses the relatime option by default. For your SSD partitions (formatted as ext3), replace relatime with noatime in fstab. Reboot for the changes to take effect.
Where to do this in snow, while there is only flopyy drive in fstab???

thanks and regards
Andrew

AndrewG.
1. I would recommed to try pmedia=satadh or pmedia=atahd or pmedia=ataflash also might work. You can try also by removing whole pmedia from kernel row also. I think there is not one answer :)

CF is compact flash. That is not right media you choosed !!!! I think Internal IDE/SATA Flash drive is the right choice.

2. I have no experience abou ssd drives. I cant help you on this.

Ext4 is supported. My linux partition is ext4 so I can quarantee that ext4 is supported fs format.

I think fstab is quite obsolete in puppies. I havent tinkered with it at all ever. You could try to make search of fstab usage in the forum. My believe is that you dont need to tinker with it or it isnt even effective. Just my suspicion.

I use grub4dos only so my knowledge about other booting methods is really old. About 2 years old.

Thank you.
There was no frugal option and ext4 was rejected by installer because I've chosen CF, SD drive. Frugal is back when I choose IDE drive.

I did install it again with regular IDE HDD option and ext4 partition, but during installation linux hangs up when files are copied. Tried it 4 times.
Any clue?

When I formatted to ext3 there is no that problem with frugal.

I'm gonna try to move files to pendrive, format ssd to ext4 and then copy them back. Will see.

AndrewG. About ssd and ext4. No, I dont have a glue, but I will follow and be alert about what might cause your failure. I havent had ever problem with my ext4 partition and Snow Puppies.

Did you choose Internal IDE/SATA flash ?

When I choose Internal Flash with ext4 there is no Frugal option and I got the message
"
/dev/sda1 failed to mount on /mnt/data... nothing else mounted on /mnt/data? One know case for this failure is when installing to the internal Flash drive of a Intel Classmate laptop. Well, you can attempt to fix this problem by creating a new filesystem in sda1.

When I choose Internal IDE with ext4 it freezes while installing frugal.

I do not understand one shortcut in Universal Installer.
(exs: CF card, Sd memory card)
exs means examples?

OK. I menaged to solve the issue.
1. I installed frugual on ext3 formatted SSD drive with IDE HDD drive selected.
2. I copy frugal folder puppy 015 to USB pendrive
3. I formatted SSd drive to ext4 nad copy back the frugal folder from pendrive.
4. I installed grub. Grub4dos did not want to work at all. I used Grub bootloader config and everythink works fine.

Difference between ext4 and ext3 on SSD old 8GB drive is huge.
Now the speed is almost like on old 40GB IDE drive.
Love it!
But, from my hard issue I can say there is a bug in Universal Installer and SSD drives. But workaround works :)

regards
Andrew

have not tried SnowPuppy since v 005
So glad to try v 015 :)
Nice logo and wallpapers

Just finished watching a complete film on Iplayer (BBC)
FireFox did not crash (because of Adobe) and this for me
makes a huge difference. Many thanks.

Somehow Flash is NOT engaging both cores and
going into some strange loop that eventually crashes my dualcore
So the early Lucid that SnowPuppy is based on may well be better for my set up

I am not sure if you have considered adding the control panel used in Lucid 525?

Anyway bravo. You seem to be making all the right/cool moves.

Lobster. Thank you of your report. I have noticed you have the ability to find problems with flash. Well, for me the latest firefox and flash have been stable enough.

About control panel. Snow Puppy has already PuPControl panel. You can activate it by pressing Ctrl + Shift and C. It is also in the Menu > Utility > General Utilities.

I have no plan to change to another. I like Radkys Puppy Apps and I am going to stick with them.

Right now I am playing with 2.6.38.2 kernel. My third compile was quite succesful. Only multimedia support aka webcam still needs fixing.

Yes. You do have the Pupcontrol panel. However, if one clicks on the setup icon on the desktop, it still brings up the old set up menu, not the control panel.
No big deal though. Just wanted to let you know.

Ooops. About setup icon. I use menu mostly. I consider that as bug.

Hmm, replacing desktop icons would mean stepping away from woof standard, and I wouldnt like to change more and more things with my own modifications. At last I dont remember what I have replaced with my own stuff.
But I will sleep over one night and think about changing desktop icon behavior. Old setup anyway is not the preferred method for me.
Thank you marco07. That blind I have been.

I did not consider this as a bug. Otherwise, I should have been reporting this quite a while ago, when I first noticed it. Sorry for that!

I like Radkys Puppy Apps
Me too. :)
Did not see it in the menu - so used to clicking from the icon in 525.
Firefox and Flash have proved very stable in Snowpuppy for me.
I had problems using both the highglx and ATI crystal graphics drivers.
Neither worked, not sure why.
ATI created a black screen of death.
I was able to rescue SnowPuppy and run xorgwizard to reset.

Anyway my 3rd day streaming flash videos and having a totally stable browser, something I have not had for a long time (been using Lucid 525 betas)

Getting acquainted with Snowpuppy. Really happy 8)

Highly experimental Snow Puppy-015 build with 2.6.38.2 kernel. wuxiandianzi uploaded this patched kernel. Thank you wuxiandianzi, highly appreciated.
I included whole stack of network and multimedia drivers. Some ppl has already used my recompliled kernel 2.6.38.2 succesfully. The kernel is my fourth compile. Only ndiswrapper is included as extra module. So the other missing modules outside kernel source is still under progress.

Bugs are expected but maybe also success. Have fun or ......

pemasu thanks for the one with latest kernel but sadly it failed on my Acer.

Total black screen whatever I tried. Not even Vesa got the screen going. Sound was strong. Failed to reboot or shut down using the menu.

Lobster the text your wrote
I had problems using both the highglx and ATI crystal graphics drivers.
I have wondered about this too but how do you find out if it work or not?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

I found that out here too.

Did a manual frugal install and booted to a taskbar and a cursor........nothing else.

But, I'm posting from my Insidious build w/ your kernel and it's working pretty well.Need to reconnect the internet on every boot but otherwise doing well. Same kernel and same machine so looking forward to the new upload. :)

Thank you James C. I found the problem with my build. Packages-lupu, processed packages for building were not full. When you build again and again it gets corrupted.
I just need to create packages again. Well, it takes time. The new build will be tomorrow business.

No hurry, computing should be for the fun of it so go for it when you long for it. Don't force you into it or you can get burned out. :)
