New kernel 2.6.38.4 for puppy/lupu/quirky/WOOF-BUILDER

#1 Post by wuxiandianzi »

I have built a new puppy by the latest woof script.

It is based on puppy-4.32+t2+xorg-7.3.

The kernel based on my new kernel(2.6.38.4),it runs faster than lupu-5.25

Since I test the new kernel is about 15 days. I compiled it about 100 times.

The alsa now can works,but it still nedd to set by manual at boot.I do not know why,and I find that new kernel and udev seems create new dev in "/dev/snd/"

++++++++++++++++++++++++++notes+++++++++++++++++++++++++

1 I have remove the seamonkey2.0 with firefox4.2, It is can not open some site.

2 New kernel still in testing,some contorl such as fan speed of cpu changed in new kernel.I do not konow how to write script to detcet it.

3 The new kernel support LZO and XZ farmat,squashfs+xz is good to reduced size of puppy. btrfs is compiled as modules, it is not safe to use.

4 Some useful libraries missing in /lib/ or /usr/lib/. I did not edit the woof script only keep default.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

At first I want to build a new puppy based on archlinux. But it fails an second step "2create.." The packages of arch is "*.xz" extension name. and the woof seems to

Extract it by "gzip", anyone can tell me how to do, I even extract it by hand with "xz -d *.xz " and create new packages with "*.tar.gz" but fails agin.

I have allso build new kernel of "lupu-525",you can download it here: http://wo18.meibu.com it contains the patched kernel source by me.

NOTE: I have no foreign space out of china,so you will spend more time to download it.

Thanks to pemasu, he shared my stuff in his site :http://smokey01.com/pemasu/wuxiandianzi_2.6.38_stuff/

But it is difficult to uoload my newest stuuf of new kernel for the bad speed.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Anyone would want to known why I like to change new kernel,it is easy to understand that:

New kernel such as 2.6.38.X support desktop system better,it support many new hardware.

Many famous release of linux such as ubuntu/debian are using new kernel ,we want to share its package so puppy should also need to update kernel to use their package I think.

But the new kernel has many defects ,here need capable friend up in order to better service for puppy.thanks to your!

HI taca0
do you mean that put the kernel package as a "pet" file. then the woof can use it to build puppy?

GOOD idea!
I will make a pet file with name "linux_kernel-2.6.38.2.pet"
and you can put it into woof to build new puppylinux with 2.6.38.2 kernel.

but the new kernel 2.6.38.2 need some test to find problems.

some sound card can not be found, so I will recompile the kernle after the problem solved.
thank you !

Cool, thanks.

Does this kernel have the new xz compression for squashfs enabled? (CONFIG_SQUASHFS_XZ)

HI Terryphi
Thank you for testing,today you can download it.
I have recompiled kernel 2.6.38.2 with :
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_LZO=y
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_XZ=y
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_EMBEDDED=y
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_FRAGMENT_CACHE_SIZE=3

Could someone upload this kernel as files or as pet to somewhere.

And thank you of your hard work while testing, compiling and posting this kernel.

Seems to be working ok here.

I added your kernel to lupu 525 and compressed the main sfs with xz.
That shrunk the ISO down to about 109M (from 128M)

Lupu devx.sfs is down to 117M (from 139M)

I can upload my ISO if anybody wants it.

Sure, no problem
Uploading to my dropbox account now...

One thing I noticed though was that it had to search all sub folders for the main sfs, even though the sfs was in the root of the drive.
Strange :?
