Lost Puppy Pet files?

#1 Post by 8-bit »

With some Puppy web sites gone, a lot of the links on the forum to Pets report a 404 error.
So I figured I would post the contents of my Pet directory for those that might be searching for some PET files.
It is by no means complete.
Also, if you have a directory of PET files on your hard drive, you can create a file of the contents with "ls >petfiles.txt".
This is mine for easy reading keeping in mind that you can not download any directly from the list.
What I am trying to say here is that a lot of the files from the web sites that went down may still be available from other members on the forum. So do not be afraid to ask.

If the forum administrator wants to move this thread, he is welcome to do so.
But what I was trying to show is that just maybe the files that were lost when puppylinux.ca and it's other site went down can be recovered to a certain extent.
I recently posted such a pet file for a member that was looking for "alien2pet.pet".
I did not have the pet file, but I did have a tar.gz file that I left for him as an attachment in a reply.
I realize that some pet files are to large to be attached to posts on the forum.
But I made the list of some of what I have for those that might not be able to find the Pet due to a site going down.

@8-bit.... didn't mean to criticise! As cthisbear said, a great help to Puppy users.

I agree....8-bit, would you care to upload them to my server? I can create an account for you if you like, so you'll have a place to put them all..

Sylvander, you want to upload those to my server? I'll make a .PET directory and put all uploads in there for the community's easy access, if you and 8-bit wish - up to you guys, let me know.

russoodle,
Before one would do that, the files in ones list would have to be crosschecked to see if they exist on the forum or other existing puppy support sites.
It would have been nice to have a listing of the files that were on puppylinux.ca and its mirror.
Also, to keep the file lists to a minimum as to size, I suppose one could compress the list and add it as an attachment.

But as to uploading, I have PET files in my list that I do not even know what they were for and what version of Puppy they were originally created for.

I also have a bunch of tar.gz files. But they are scattered as were some of the PET files I have.

Also, at this time, I do not want to have to write a description of each file for uploading.

But, thanks to Flash :) , One tar.gz file that could be classified as utilities have made it to the forum again.
One is editinit.targz and the other I still have is edit_sfs-2.1.pet.

With just these two files one could rebuild Puppy adding and removing applications to create the base for a custom ISO.
The word of warning though is to make sure the original SFS and init.gz files are backed up in case something goes wrong.

1. "Sylvander, you want to upload those to my server?"
I echo what 8-bit said, plus...
Certainly, but how should I do it?
Some of those I made folders for various good reasons known to me at the time and possibly now forgotten.
I probably did that if there were a number of files making some kind of set.

True, and a bit of a daunting task that'd be..

Maybe you should post about this in the Additional Software (PETs 'n' stuff) section..?

I'll give you a username and pawsword, then just zip them up into a .tar.gz file and upload via ftp to a folder on my server, from which i'll transfer them to a publicly-accessible directory. PM me and i'll give you the details.

1. "upload via ftp"
I believe I've never done that before; how is it done?

PROBLEM:

1. Whilst attempting to use Peazip to make a zip archive of all the PET files.
First I copied all of the folders and files to the "/mnt/home" location...
[sdb2= an ext3 partition on a dedicated 10GB internal HDD, with 3GB free]
Then deleted a few items I thought should be excluded.
Then, when using Peazip, all seemed to be proceeding well, but then got the error shown in the screenshot below.

Sylvander,

As for the problem you describe....i can't explain the error, but if you have another zip/archiving app, eg. Xarchiver or something, maybe you could try that and see what happens.

PROBLEM:

2. Attempting to use XArchive to archive all of the PET files to a single file.
.tar.gz archive file type is the only option available so far as I can see.
(a) Can't find any way to select more than a single file from the list of many.
(b) When I go ahead and choose a single file, I get the warning shown by the screenshot below.

SUCCESS! :D 8)

1. Used Xfe.
(a) Highlighted all of the files and folders inside the "petfiles" folder holding them.
[Is there any way to select a whole group of items? I normally use "Shift", but it won't work here (e.g. in Xfe, or XArchive, or Peazip).]

(b) Right-clicked and choose "Add to archive...", and specified a location and name for the archive file, and clicked OK.
That seems SO MUCH EASIER than the other 2 previous failed methods.

(c) File = petfiles.tar.gz is 327.1 MB.
Is the .tar.gz file type OK?

 after all that.....excellent!

.tar.gz is perfect, thank you -- the server's OS is Linux (centOS), so it speaks the language.

1. I can run "Menu->Internet->gFTP" OK.

2. I can enter the details you gave so as to attempt to connect.

PROBLEM!
3. When I navigate to the "/mnt/home/petfiles.tar.gz" file, and select [highlight] it...
The right-arrow is greayed out...
And down below it says:
Transfer Files: This feature is not available using this protocol

4. Not only that, but...
When I click the "twin-PC" button to attempt to connect...
There is a failure to connect.
At 1st it reported that connection was successful...
But when it got down to "Password required", and "PASS xxxx"...
The next report was:
Home directory not available - aborting

5. Makes no difference whether I attempt to connect before or after attempting to transfer the file from left to right-hand pane; the result is the same.

Hi Sylvander,

Have you tried using FileZilla - download the linux version extract the file to where ever and find the Filezilla executable to run, no need to install.
