Just to be clear, I had no part in writing the database program I attached.
The credit for it as well as more info can be found here.

Ah good find 8-bit, well done, had forgotten about that . . .
Guy (gposil) is on extended leave in a place outside the kennels
known as 'Real Life' (personally I do not believe in its existence . . .)
so from what I remember features such as the ability to create a database have not yet been implemented.
For a lot of uses it will be ideal even as is
Most people including myself have no need for a database,
which is about manipulating and processing data.
Template front ends give little more than simple input and presentation
and if lucky some form of sorted output export.
That is what most people understand as a database.
Open/libreOffice database is big and probably stable?
Not sure never used - it does have macro language I believe?
Fast and powerful DOS database programing languages are usually beyond most peoples needs if used to the MS Works database - which I remember for its simplicity and stability.
Using MS Works in Wine is fine.

If all you need is a flat file database, most people can get by quite nicely with a spreadsheet. If you need a relational database, things get a little more tricky.
The database system in Open Office is pretty good for simple relational databases where the relationships are at only a couple to a few levels. If you want to go closer to whole hog, try SQLite or use the implementation in sqlitestudio. The biggie is MySQL.
Anything beyond Open Office may require that you know some fairly serious programming.

Wait a minute. I thought most everyone had a need for at least some basic databases! Are you sure we live in the same universe?

JohnJs - U hit the nail on the head!
>Used MSWorks4.5 with Win98 for years. It was a great flatfile database but later versions of Works were a disappointment.<
Man 10-4 on that. I’ve been using MSWorks 4.0 checkbook on W95, W98, WXP(barely) all these years and it just suits me to a T. Don’t want nuthin else. I figured at the worst I could copy the headings into another DB.
Many don’t like the MS Works but I do for me and yes the later versions suck compared the old.
===========================
I hate OO with a pashion. Why buy the Queen Mary when rowboat will do? Don’t need all that stuff. To invasive. Too massive a program - for me.
===================
I still have a MSWorks 4.0 disk and will try it in Wine When I come back to this all next year. Not sure what Wine is or how to get there. Later on that. Also the other stuff mentioned.
I did get the printer to function.
Careful perusing of the camera list revealed only 2 cameras NOT on the list - mine.
Thanx again. I’ll come back to this thread soonz I can in 2011.
-bye

The REBOL programming language is well suited to database applications. A script can be written very quickly, or an existing script adapted.www.rebol.net/cookbook/recipes/0012.html
A search at the script library might reveal others -
www.rebol.org.
Need the engine, don't know how the license might relate to your application.
www.rebol.com
Rebol runs on Windows, Linus Mac, and about 20 other platforms, with little or no change to scripts. Very little overhead, extremely flexible - well worth a look or study. With a bit of luck, one might have a script up and running in less time than it takes to read the first chapter of the manual of some database packages.

Well here I am back. I fired up Puppy just to look at it again. I have basically guv it up. I liked the Puppy and would have changed over but the deal breaker is that it won't recognize my cameras and I was unable to get Wine to pick up my favorite MSWorks Database program. I did mess with Wine on 2 comps and almost had the Database on my old comp but screwed the thing up somehow and will now junk it.
Perhaps (probly) a more savvy operator coulda made it work. I simply haven't the time. Bye

Take a look at http://www.alexnolan.net/software/dbf.htm
It's a portable windows app that runs under wine.
DBF Viewer has the following features:-
* Open and viewing DBF File.
* Filtering on multiply fields to query data.
* Printing Tables and preview
* Add, Edit, Deleting and Updating records.
* Search with partial and Case Insensitive options
* Go to specified field (for tables with lots of columns)
* Table Info displaying Record count, Type, Language type, Records size,Indexed, Encryption, Last updated, fields and field types.
* Pack Table.
* Zap Table (Empty).
* Show / Hide Columns.
* Export to formats such as CSV, PDF, XLS, RTF, WKS, XML, HTML, DBF.
* Import wizard with field mapping.
* Record View and editing screen.
* New Table (Create a DBF File)
* Open table using command line parameters
* Set Table Type
* Visual Count
Good Luck,
Thom

I have a collection of several hundred model aircraft plans and use the built-in Gnumeric spreadsheet program in Puppy 4.XX as a simple database to keep them organized.
Like MS Works, I have several columns with headings of Category, Manufacturer, Model Name, Wingspan, Source, and Designer. Very handy system for quickly locating any chosen plan.
Sidestepped a lot of unnecessary spreadsheet learning by using OpenOffice.org for Dummies as my user manual. Go to the part about using Calc, all that you need to know is likely contained in the first two chapters. MS Excel is the model for OO, Gnumeric, and other spreadsheet programs so their learning materials are pretty much interchangable. With what you already know about MS Works, the learning curve should be a breeze .

Hello.
If you're looking to process csv files, this might be just your ticket:
