skype

Search on the forum for skype , there are a lot of notes on it .
It works with ALSA who is default in the newer Puppy .
If you use a Puppy without Alsa , install it from the Puppyforum about ALSA.

Instructions ?

If you want skype use pupget, it was in there the last time I used it.

If you want the latest and greatest skype & you have qt installed
Download the package from skype named "Dynamic binary tar.bz2"
Extract to wherever you want. And press the skype executalble when you want to use it, of course you can create a shortcut on the desktop.

If you do not have qt installed download the package named "Static binary tar.bz2 with Qt 3.2 compiled in" and do as I instructed above.
Heaven is on the way, until then let's get the truth out!

I use Skype, which I downloaded as the static binary from Skype's download website, but to make it work I also had to download and install libGL.pup.

Skype Instability

#5 Post by ecomoney »

I have skype installed at three locations and it seems to be very unstable and frequently hangs. Im using 1.06 and have tried the version 1.2.0.18 at skype.com and the puppy installer version 1.1.0.20 . It also sometimes lets me make one call and then hangs, or doesnt let me log in at all. Is this a version instability (puppy 1.06 was pre-ALSA)?

Skype has always worked very reliably for me. The only thing is, I have to kill it (from the right-click menu) rather than simply close it, or it won't restart unless I first reboot Puppy.

have just upgraded to skype 1.09 and it is working fine now. I think it must be something to do with having the new ALSA sound that was introduced since 1.07. If you have problems it is worth upgrading.....in fact, its just worth upgrading ;-) :-)

Bug report and workaround

#8 Post by ecomoney »

I have noticed a bug on 1.09CE and skype 1.1.0.2 . If you close it and then re-open and try to log in again your login will fail.

If you go into control panel>kp manage running processes you will see several entries for skype after you have ran it once. You will need to manually kill off these processes before you can re-open skype and log in again.

2.02 and Skype

#9 Post by ecomoney »

Looking through the Skype Forum, I have found this to be a bug in Skype itself. A workaround is to type "killall skype" into a terminal. Then you can restart skype and it will log in normally.

I also have discovered an issue with Skype and 2.02 (perhaps all 2.xx versions). See this thread

Are you sure it isn't an incompatibility with JWM?

When I "close" Skype here it reduces itself to a tray icon, but I am running Fluxbox. It then must be restored from the tray icon.

Attempting to execute Skype again while it is so minimized shows no results.

Hi Fluxit, no, I use icewmultra. I tried it in JWM just to make sure and the bug is still there. Ive no experience with fluxbox.
