Into puppy's past

#1 Post by 666philb »

I thought it would be interesting to try to find the oldest puppy i could, and see what it was like. I found this.... puppy 1.0.3_firefox 2005, Image
I comes with Firefox version1 'preview release', leafpad 0.81, abiword 2.2.7, and gaim chat. The bootload screen's amazing ^^^^^
the iso can be downloaded here Download puppy-1.0.3-firefox_2005_07_21.iso on Uploadingit 51.4mb
MD5 5f8b92b6626543ce209bedecf812991a

Now i would like to challenge you to find one older, and post it here so me and anyone else who's interested, can try it out.

Happy Hunting

Found the same one on MEGAUPLOAD. It's a shame that it's almost impossible to find older Puppies on the net nowdays, as newer versions come out the older versions are dumped never to be found again it seems. I have a few older ones based on Puppy 2x but have never been able to find any 1x aside from the one you posted above or many other releases I used to use or wanted to try such as some of the older Barebones puppies like Empty Crust or Onebone or even Picopup.

I have some older isos too, if there's interest for them maybe I can upload them on brainwave site.
I remember there was one puppy site that had "vintage" folder that even had 0.x versions but can't find it now.
Currently looking at a DVD that I burned some many puppy isos on it, I have puppies like grafpup-2.0-dillo which was Nathan's multiuser project and few more but most of them still have working links.

Now check out that aren't mini cd's with puppy cool? 8)

666philb,

A little off subject here, but is the 3rd graphic screen available as a jpg file for use as a background? It is really nice in a retro sort of way.

Also, thank you for posting the link to Puppy 1.03. I tried downloading the file using win vista and failed.
But I tried again using Puppy lucid 5.20 and it was a go and I got the file.

And while on the subject, on Distrowatch, there was a list of most of the Puppy releases. Most have disappeared as to being able to download them.
It would be nice to be able to have a DVD created with a boot menu and all the Puppy versions on it.

Also, for those that want to try out early versions, do not forget that a lot of hardware was not even created when Puppy 1.03 was released so results may vary depending on hardware.

Anyway, nice find!

Hi 8-bit,

A dvd of early puppy's would be good, although they would probably fit on a cd :)

I was told on puppy chat that there used to be a vintage puppy repository hosted at puppylinux.ca, but alas, the site is no more. Dejan555 found a really old link to puppy 0.4, but it was dead, probably linked to puppylinux.ca.

I'm hoping that some of the puppy old school will dig through their disk collections and post their puppy treasures. So that puppys past is available for everybody whose interested, now and in the future.

Here's the boot picture, it's 640x480 and i took it by booting puppy1 in virtualbox.

You will find the versions and release dates and my recommendation to use the wayback machine
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Versions

The earliest version which I tried in the last two years
was about 40MB

You may have to use older hardware to run the earliest . . .
if you can find them 8)

This page is at the top German, but when you scroll down you will see a long list with dld links to older ones

http://computerophil.at/PUPPYdetail.html

Hi lobster
I don't think the wayback machine likes me, as have had no success with it.
Do you still have a copy of that 40mb puppy? and could you upload it somewhere to link on this page.

thankyou

Thankyou nancy reagan,

It seems like you've been looking to do the same with old puppys.

your link enabled to get puppy 0.9.8rc which i booted in virtualbox. This puppy has no boot image, but has a lot more apps than 1.0.3 but at a lower version. Included are gxine 0.3.3, snack audio player, gcombust cdburner 0.1.55, leafpad 0.7.2, 5games including rubix,(this is exactly the same in my lupu520) and according to the timeline below, this is the first puppy with pupget the start of the PPM.

Puppy-0.4.iso is the oldest i've got.
20.7 mb
Good find
That is early and probably would not work on
contemporary PC's.
Uses Vesa? No support for SATA, LCD,
uses Dillo etc . . .

Could not find the 40MB I got working incidentally
I did post on the forum about it but could not find the post . . .

No. :)
Off the top of my head, 1.09 had the 2.4.27 kernel.....pretty sure all earlier releases had 2.4 as well.

2.02 had 2.6.16.7 ........ not certain on any others.

Hi trapster, thankyou for posting puppy0.4,

There's a problem though, the iso seems corrupt and i am unable to mount it. Burning it to a cd didn't help either. Dejan555 also couldn't mount it and pointed out that the download is 19mb not 20.7mb. Trapster could you possibly try to mount to iso and confirm that the original works, and also upload it again.
As me and a few others can't wait to try it!

The 0.4 is also at the link

http://computerophil.at/PUPPYdetail.html

I provided, amongst many others.

However for as far as I can gather this link is dead, whilst most links still work.

Maybe you could contact the maintainer of the site, Robert Fuchs, as he listed a big collection of older Pups

computerophil@gmail.com

Thanks again nancy reagan

Yes all the links on that site lower than puppy 0.9.8 are dead, however i have taken your advice and emailed 'Robert Fuchs' (cheers for the email address) asking if he can help.

I have also been offered some server space to host them all, if we can get them all back together.

fingers crossed
