My Gnumeric package does not contain any part of Gnumeric 1.10.12, I even tested for sake of an argument, The only thing I reused was a .desktop file, no directories etc. I even went as far as to delete /usr/lib/gnumeric and /usr/share/gnumeric and installed the pet and no Gnumeric 1.10.12 was found anywhere.

Could this be causing Abiword to mess up?
Having a folder for version 2.6 and version 2.8?
This is how it comes with Luci 252.

Please don't call me cynical ;-) but Abiword has been flaky on every computer I have ever sued it on. I have had that same experience. I created an html file in Abiword and then abiword refused to open it--saying it was flawed or something.

I personally don't think it has anything to do with Puppy.

I would be open to an alternative, but to be honest I haven't found one that I regarded as workable. We have to have an open source word processor--a "real" one.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Progress Report

Bash 4.2 working OK
Openssl 0.9.8r working OK - Feb 2011 - updated and maintained for people like us
geany 0.21 working OK
gnumeric, goffice, libgfs - working correctly afaik - no errors - ttuuxxx's build - we have two candidates but ttuuxxx won last time so he goes first this time ;-)
gparted - 0.6.2 is back with libparted updated to 2.3 from 2.2

Now, what are we going to do the next 5 days ;-)

Been running my 2 upgrade installs of 252 with no real problems. Between both installs I've been trying SeaMonkey 2.0.11, Firefox 3.6.14,Firefox 4.0 Beta 12, Chromium and Opera 11.01.......all have been working fine.No crashes yet anyway.
On to more testing...

Doesn't appear to be a lot of bugs but probably need more feedback on upgrade installs.

Well i've been playing with siag (Siag Office is a tightly integrated, free office package. It consists of the spreadsheet Siag, the word processor PW, the animation program Egon, the text editor XedPlus, the file manager Xfiler and the previewer Gvu) pet for 335 is out there (latest is 361) and about a 2.2meg pet, and egon works properly with 5.2. May allow a few other packages to go while your at it as xed has things like a threader built in to it.

regards
scsijon

@james, havent done much testing yet as working elsewhere at present most of my free time, 8) If I can't find a few more decent problems down deeper, well......, that's why I asked for a week.

xz compression is broken. As such txz and tar.xz can't be opened.
01micko, I was able to create a tar.xz in 520 and unpack it in 252. It took 2 steps--it unpacked the xz to tar and then unpacked the tar.

The opening screen for pupzip does not show a wrapper for txz (or for tar.xz for that matter). Is that the problem? Do you have access to sample of txz?
No example but you can grab any txz file from slackware repos and test if you like.

What it seems is that xz-utils is needed. Then you can install a txz as a pet but there is something missing.. Barry has a wrapper for it somewhere. As is you need to do it from command line. However, that was not my motivation.
When I tried to start and spup build, luci would not unpack the txz files. They are unpacked with the tar command:

Code: Select all

 tar -iJxf some_package-1.txz
the 'J' calling xz compression. This would fail.

Solution:
You could add these to the woof
xz-utils_4.999.9beta+20091116-1_i386.deb
liblzma1_4.999.9beta+20091116-1_i386.deb

xz-utils depends on liblzma

yes|xz-utils|xz-utils,liblzma1|exe,dev,doc

OR use the attached pet

OR forget it and not have that feature!

Also there are some extra mimetypes, probably getting the latest quirky rox-filer would cover that.

Cheers

as previously stated i deleted gnumeric folder from /usr/lib and /usr/share before installing your pet, then i restarted x after installing your pet
anyway - deleted save file and created again - now all is well

I don't think your a dumb user, just someone on a long learning experience. Heck I still mess-up like that .desktop file, I sometimes reuse them so that it uses the same icon and menu location as the previous, because different releases sometimes change these things and its nice to keep them current, so we don't get missing icons in the menu, or new locations for the files and saves me about 3-5 minutes of testing.
Before it was really just Gimp that was using a version number on the bin files, I think Gnumeric lastime made the system link to the bin, because I don't remember having to make it last time.

Anyways, Linux is ongoing learning, never feel dumb about it, you should feel great about it, when other users read your post and they might have the same problem, but when they read how you fixed it, you might of just saved them tons of hours. :)

ttuuxxx,

You ever have problems like this with the Abiword you have in Clasic Pup 2.14X?

bigpup wrote:Luci 252 full install upgrade from Luci 251.
Abiword problems.
I know this has been talked about in the past, but Abiword refuses to open some files that where originally made with Abiword.
This seems to be hit or miss on which ones will work or not work.
I stopped using Abiword because wast all that time making a document and you may not be able to reopen later.

No I never really had any problems with it, I'm not sure if the one in luci is a Ubuntu or puppy build, but Barry has been known to reduce some of the plugins in the iso to reduce the overall size of it. Maybe its as simple as that, or it might be time to recompile it.
I'll have a look at it, does anyone have a file that was made on abiword and doesn't work on luci that they could tar.gz and upload on here for testing purposes.
It kind of hard to fix something that you can't actually test without having an example.

Hi there error is (abiword:31994): WARNING **: Seeking in gzipped streams is awfully slow.
basically what I get from that is the system backend its using to open tar.gz files needs updating, meaning its probably not even a abiword issue.
I compiled the latest abiword 2.9.0 and still had the error.
I'll package it up anyways, funny the newer model number needed 3 new lib/deps to compile the Opendocument plugin. And also needed some dev files for the devx.
It might take a bit of time to upload it/package it. I'm a bit busy with dinner/kids.

I have always found Abiword stable for one/two page letters. :)
So most of the time for most users it is fine.
Probably better but not more stable than Ted http://www.nllgg.nl/Ted/
which used to be in Puppy . . .

Always found Abiword completely unreliable for 10 or 20 page or above documents.
Especially if adding graphics, tables etc.
That is across different computers, going right back to Windows
and all versions of Puppy.

With Siag, open office, textwriter (in ppm), javascript WP and cloud WP
I have options. :)

It may be too late for 5.2.1 but I believe the 'click browser and be given choice', that is used on first Lucid boot - with a small default
can be extended to the 'write' icon and other icons.

Linux is choice. It may be that OpenOffice/LibreOffice (always found works)
can be compiled and made quite small.

Abiword is small.
Small and not working?
