Sometimes a router and DSL/Cable modem needs to be power cycled, though it sounds like something else is amiss. I'm assuming your Internet connection is wired, so it should persist on reboot.

I would boot from the Lighthouse CD and press F2 at the boot menu. Near the RH side, bottom one of the options is Memtest86+ diagnostic. Type memtest at the boot prompt and run it for 30 min or so. If that finds no errors, reboot with puppy pfix=fsck to check for file system errors. (For an NTFS or Fat partition, run chkdsk in Windows.) If the problems continue, boot with puppy pfix=ram back up your save file and shutdown, creating a new one.

Or maybe Lighthouse just isn't right for your hardware. Maybe try it on another machine, or another Puppy variant on the same machine.

Hope that helps,
TazOC
Hi tazoc
Thank you for the fast response.
Yes,I do use a wired internet connection and also have several other Puppy's running.
I'll certainly try your suggestions asap.I don't have an explanation for it and it's been running fine for weeks without a hitch.
I installed the Marina sfs and kde4 recently and they have caused no problems either so I'm fairly certain my hardware is up for it.

SFS LiveDVD

#142 Post by gcmartin »

This is some good news of an experience I had with Lighthouse. Using @TazOC LHPUP in LiveDVD mode, he has made his distro expandable via a "boot-time" process he created. This process allowed me, for example, to add SFS files to the root of the Multi-session DVD and have them incorporated into the system at boot time. I simply choose the SFSs I want included, add them to the DVD's root, and boot. The PUP boot process will ask if I want to install the listed SFSs, and I can pick and choose which SFSs I want in my PUP system at desktop.

The only issue that I found which I was able to easily overcome was on boot of this Mariner LIveDVD, when it asks me to confirm the SFSs I was to boot, I did NOT SEE my SAMBA SFS in the list. Using the option he's made available to rescan the SFSs, it did find my SFS, which were in the root on the DVD, and it booted with my having the functionality of the SFS when the system gets to deskop.

I found this rewarding because now, my LiveDVD distro system.affords me the advantages of both PETs/SFSs with SFSs being selectable based upon my desktop needs.

Thanks @TazOC for making LightHouse the most flexible LiveDVD system yet, simply, because of the selectablity incorporated at boot-time.

Hope this helps anyone.

Firefox 4.0 beta

#143 Post by nickdobrinich »

@Tazoc,
I recommend including the Firefox 4.0 beta 11 as a LHP update.
14 Mb tar.bz2, 28 Mb uncompressed.
Much quicker than 3.6.13.
Faster Javascript.
I've been running it for several days with no issues.
It starts and runs so fast it startled me.
I feel the need for speed.

Thanks for a great OS! Question~How do I get the sound settings to "stick"? Have logged out and set alsaconf multiple times, but sound simply dies or mutes after a minute or so (on it's own). Using a cmipci PCI surround sound 5.1 card.

Tazoc,

Spectacular LHP !
Thank you for the remarkable effort,

Obviously you are a seasoned veteran software engineer.

You included LIbreOffice, PCMan-filer, Gimp, Firefox,
and loads of help with scripts ! Best Selection. I will find Audacity.

I was very surprised at the complete editor you provided for wBAR.
I had worked with something similar in FoxPro (Windows)
and the need for a semi-visual editor was obvious. Good work!

What more could an old man wish for !
I put LHP_502-G, Ubuntu 10.4, & Knoppix 6.4 MultiBooting on the HD,
and have been having a really good time.

Next adjustment is to find out where Kennewick is on the world map.
Then change it to Memphis, TN.

I would first check all of the channels in Retrovol (Menu | Multimedia | Mixers) and make sure that Master, PCM, Front and Surround are un-muted and turned up, (and IEC958 if that is connected.) Then try the Multiple Sound Card wizard in Menu | Setup | Wizards.

If the sound works at first, note if any particular apps are running when the sound drops off.

Also check that the kernel module snd-cmipci is loaded:

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep cmi
modprobe snd-cmipci
modinfo snd-cmipci
I found this parm: enable:Enable C-Media PCI soundcard. (array of bool)
so maybe boot with snd-cmipci.enable=1 :?: on the kernel line. But first check the kernel log with:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/messages | grep cmipci
Hope that helps,
TazOC

Check out BibleAnalyzer andtheWord, both work great in LHP.

Cheers,

Running great on an EeePC 900A via Unetbootin onto a 4 Gig flash drive. Using eight .sfs files (including KDE!) and a 1 Gig save file. Sound (maybe just a tad on the low side-as with most Puppies), wi-fi, video (using x-org high), and Processor cycling, as well as battery detection all working as expected!
Thank you VERY MUCH for this Puppy!

Question~Would the Canon mp-250 printer drivers (.pets) for Puppy/Lupu/Quirky work with this OS, anyone know?

PET vs SFS

#150 Post by gcmartin »

Can someone explain, simply, why a PET would be preferred or why a SFS would be preferred for a service that is to be used in LIveDVD and will survive over a reboot (session-save)?

Thanks in advance

I would try these drivers from Patriot:

Personal preference is often the deciding factor. That said, SFS files are ideal for large apps e.g., LibreOffice or combo-packs of many apps, e.g., Mariner, KDE, because they reside compressed, typically at /mnt/home and use little or no space in the save file. PETS on the other hand, are easily installed without rebooting and thus are ideal for small packages or frequent updates, e.g., Sylpheed, printer drivers, Flash, browsers. PETS are a bit easier to build and often use pinstall.sh and puninstall.sh scripts ideal for handling setup and uninstall tasks.

I don't have enough experience with multi-session CD/DVD mode, however I think SFS would be preferred because they reside compressed. Regarding a service, KDE I think, has many of them and works very well for me as an SFS. Services built into Lighthouse/Puppy e.g., cupsd, dhcpcd are typically in an SFS, (albeit the main file.)

SFS files are designed to load individually, each in a separate read-only layer, whereas PETS are all in the same read-write (top save file) layer. There is a limit to the number of SFS files that can be loaded at the same time, (40 in Lighthouse) whereas the number of PETS is practically unlimited.

[Edit:] I'm currently running LHP with 19 SFS files (not counting the main file and zWine) as well as 10 PETS.

Because SFS files are layered in below the core (main file) layer, they are less apt to cause version conflicts with system files and shared libraries. So if the same files are in both an SFS/PET and the core system, system stability and reliability is usually not affected by the SFS, but could be with a PET.

Hope that helps,
TazOC

LHP 5.03 released, new thread, new add-ons

#153 Post by tazoc »

Lighthouse Pup 5.03 is available.

Please direct related comments or questions to the new thread:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 956#499956

This is mainly a bugfix release of 5.02, however in 5.03 Opera has replaced Dillo in the base ISO and wireless connections should be more reliable with Jemimah's Frisbee Network Manager, updated dhcpcd/wpa_supplicant and tray icons.

Release notes

Some new SFS add-ons here (thanks to Q5sys, shinobar and gcmartin)
