How to install and use antivirus/malware/spyware programs? |
|
I have puppy on a USB drive and I can boot my system from it. How do I install and run a antivirus/malware/spyware program on my windows drive using puppy 5.0(I think) to remove any infections? Please be specific as I am not a linux user. I have seen other request for rudimentary help and had no idea what they were saying. So please speak in windows dialect.
Thanks

I can get you started and others might help you finish.
The following steps are for getting an antivirus program from the puppy package manager:
Open puppy package manager (right click on the screen: set up --> set up--> puppy package manager )
Click configure package manager (bottom left)
make sure that the puppy 4 box is checked.
go back to the main puppy package manager page. at the top right confirm that puppy 4 circle is checked.
click “utility” you will see a list of files xfprot and clamav are there--both are antivirus programs. click one to download and install. after that you will have to follow the directions for the specific program (it will probably need, for example, to get updated virus definitions)

I have cleaned many windows systems and the best way is to make copies of all important files and then do a format/install. Saves a lot of time installing/running anti-virus/trojan/spyware/malware programs and all the reboots. I have spent many hours chasing this and that when a 1 hour install would have taken care of it.

wow-- you must have a better way of getting windows up than me. Do you take an image of the harddrive right after an install and then use that? I find myself spending a weekend hunting for drivers, etc.

After the first install i usually save all drivers, etc to a flash drive just in case. It takes me about 4 hrs or so to search for drivers for a new install. The first place I start is the mgf's website. I just got a tower for the boy and a laptop for the wife last weekend from craigslist. Took me all day to get them both up and running with all updates.
I use Acronis True Image for windows.

Here are some threads that might be useful (I was trying to do the same as you):

and

Which antivirus program did you get? It may be that you launch it by looking among the menu entries. Or you might have to click the console button, and start from there.

1. Download [whilst working within your Puppy] and/or install this:
avast4workstation-1.0.8.pet
Check the download is OK using this:
md5sum = 46c21dc2fad103a70697ba6dc2015fbb
2. Go to:
http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
...And register.
They will send you an email with a registration code.
The first time you run the Avast program you will need to enter [copy & paste] the code into a box, and OK it.
3. See this post/thread and the one it links to about how to successfully update the virus definitions.
