The EAGLE Layout Editor is an easy to use, yet powerful tool for designing printed circuit boards (PCBs). The name EAGLE is an acronym, which stands for
Easily Applicable Graphical Layout Editor
The program consists of three main modules
* Layout Editor
* Schematic Editor
* Autorouter
which are embedded in a single user interface. Therefore there is no need for converting netlists between schematics and layouts.
What can the Freeware version do... well here you go: http://www.cadsoftusa.com/freeware.htm
Get v5.11.0 here.
Want an older version? 5.8.0 can be found here.

Eagle is a really cool program. I started using it more than a decade ago. Pretty easy to learn, even without a manual.Q5sys wrote:The EAGLE Layout Editor is an easy to use, yet powerful tool for designing printed circuit boards (PCBs). The name EAGLE is an acronym, which stands for

Thanks Q5sys. It doesn't come with menu entry, though, so I had to figure out that it's stored in /opt. But it starts up fine in my puppeee.

There should be a bash script that loads it in /root/Desktop/jamesbond wrote:Thanks Q5sys. It doesn't come with menu entry, though, so I had to figure out that it's stored in /opt. But it starts up fine in my puppeee.
However now that I think about it... people knowing that depends on if they have that visable from their desktop.

So either look in /opt, or go to /root/desktop and use the bash script.Q5sys wrote:There should be a bash script that loads it in /root/Desktop/jamesbond wrote:Thanks Q5sys. A nice thing about Eagle is that there are shops that will make your board directly from the Eagle project. You don't need to make gerbers. A while back, I worked with a company that took Eagle and a BOM in their preferred format and shipped you stuffed boards.Q5sys wrote:The EAGLE Layout Editor is an easy to use, yet powerful tool for designing printed circuit boards (PCBs).
Another option is ExpressPCB which runs under wine. You can get 4 boards faster and at a lower cost with ExpressPCB than with any other method of getting boards made. The down side is that larger quantities don't give you much of a price break.
BTW: If you search on kicad, you will find my contribution on the schematic capture and modeling side of things.
