Bigpup, I think Lucid 5.2 does *not* have that update. Since it has to do with pfix=ram, then it would need a new release, that is, a new iso, to include it.

I don't remember seeing this on LiveDVD? How does this happen? Is it because I am saving to the DVD that I don't see that option to save?

I do not know, maybe if you choose multi-session CD/DVD, it just assumes that you do not want it to store anything on your hard drives?

gcmartin wrote:

Which leads to a 2nd set of questions: If by accident a LiveCD user makes the mistake and saves a session to the HDD instead of the LiveCD, the system now has prior saved sessions on the LiveCD, AND it has the current saved session on the HDD, what is the expected behavior when the LiveCD user reboots ? (Assume, here, he does NO KEYBOARDING at system startup.)
... I imagine your scenario would result in similar behavior. BTW: With multi-session CD/DVD, does it ask you where to save every time you reboot/shutdown? ...and what happens when your CD/DVD runs out of space?
Soory for being so tardy on this response: Somehow I missed this until today. You ask 3 questions:
  1. Running LiveDVD, I have never used full or frugal. LiveCD/LiveDVD provides everything a Puppy (RAM-based OS) needs. Since its more stable than M$ its a good solution if you can accomplish your work requirements.(meaning you will ONLY reboot whenever you install something that requires it .) That's the reason I posted. I am testing PXE in FATDOG and wanted to insure that the directions provided to Puppy users in the PXE document was consistent and would properly instruct users who implement PXE. If the PXE LAN client happened to have Puppy main SFSs on the hard drive which match the one coming from PXE how to get their systems to boot properly without hassles.
  2. Yes at shutdown/reboot, LiveDVD users are also presented with session save options. And, it WILL save your session to the DVD using it the next time you reboot.
  3. This version of Puppy delivers a 125MB ISO. I have a 4.8GB DVD. You don't need a Ph.d to fgure this one. Even a LiveCD has never run out of space in my years of playing, er, using Puppy.
  4. (I know you did ask this, so just view this as a comment)If I had to boot a Puppy as often as I have to boot a Microsoft, I MIGHT consider putting the OS on my HDD. But, I don't. Further, I have an OS (liveCD) that is "insulated" from corruption, per se. With the 2 (and I have additional other reasons), LiveCD and LiveDVD for a RAM-based OS that is stable is a perfectly acceptable solution for me.
Again, I posted to understand the behavior of a system when booting a LiveCD when there may be a corresponding Base SFS visible on the HDD. I assume that there also is a way to instruct the boot process so that it WILL NOT LOOK at the HDD, and was hoping someone would have provided that guidance.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Seems like an important bug fix to a basic option for booting Puppy. Sure makes you wonder what is really going on if you boot a live CD with "puppy pfix=ram".

Hi bigpup,

If you try puppyluvr's MultiPup version 1.0 (with just Lupu 5.2 if you wish) I believe the code he uses will eliminate the problem.

Jasper seems to give you a workable solution? What you need to look at in that thread is a recommendation about the limitations of the way it is set up so maybe you have to duplicate entries to fill the numer of entries with same menu boot code so the script don't act up. I remember he wrote some such recommendation. But I can be wrong.

I just wanted to post a quick "THANK YOU" to the Lupu 520 developers for the inclusion of the Win+D keybinding for clearing the desktop. Nice touch! Totally didn't expect that pleasant surprise for disappearing and reappearing a cluttered desktop.

How is that done?

Can i second that question? I'd really like to know how to bind commands to that (otherwise useless) button: open a new text file, open a specific directory, run the browser, nothing fancy but it does boost productivity.

Embarassed Like I would know? Actually I only spotted this feature as I'm in and out of XP quite a bit, and out of reflex use Winkey combos often when I'm in Puppy. Patriot offered this how-to earlier on page 9 of the "JWM 2.0.1 Enhancements and Fixes" thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=316885#316885:

PostPosted: Thu 18 Jun 2009, 07:45 Post subject: Enabling Winkey support

Hmmm .....

I've read that a few people (or was it a lot of people?) wanted to have Winkey function on Puppy (for whatever reason) ... Let me point out that Winkey support must first be "enabled" in X before it makes any difference to JWM. Well, what I meant was that we need to assign the winkey as the Super key first ... Here's how :

1. Add the "XkbOptions" line to your /etx/X11/xorg.conf :

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
Option "XkbLayout" "us" #xkeymap0
Option "XkbOptions" "altwin:super_win"
EndSection

The last Option line assigns (both left+right) Winkey as the Super key.

2. Now, edit your /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal and add whatever keybinding you want :

Code:
<Key mask="C" key="Escape">root:3</Key>
<Key mask="P" key="D">desktop</Key>
<Key mask="P" key="E">exec:defaultbrowser</Key>
<Key mask="P" key="F">exec:pfind</Key>
<Key mask="P" key="L">exec:Xlock</Key>
<Key mask="P" key="R">exec:gexec</Key>

The keybindings above means:

Ctrl-Esc - Start Menu
Winkey+D - toggle desktop
Winkey+E - run default browser
Winkey+F - run pfind
Winkey+L - run Xlock
Winkey+R - run command

3. Restart JWM.

Rgds

I regret that I haven't tried it myself, but I agree entirely with erdraug and many others in the Puppy forum about the productivity gains. I would love all the suggestions Patriot outlines in this example, plus some others found here: http://productivity.ben61a.com/windows/windows-7-shortcut-keys.php

Sorry that I didn't see your posts earlier. I hope the above from Patriot helps...

Thanks for the LMMS, waited a year or so for that one. I own a keyboard that send out midi signals but no sound. I did manage to make LMMS work in Windows but it send no sound to any thing but it had sound showing on the VU meters. So one need to be good at reading the manual or have somebody who knows how to get things going.

Some say one need Jack for it to make sound? Is that true?

Yes that was the most frustaing thing. I got same result. It sounded when I did it with mouse but dead silent when the midi signals did the same thing. Totally crazy. I could see how the midi told the program to do a high C and for how long and the the Vu Meters went up and down in line with the music but no sound and then clicking the mouse on the key board iinstant sound replaying back what I recorded no sound.

11pm here so the bed are looking very welcoming Smile

I've not read through the 61 pages of this thread, so I may have missed something. I tried Lupu 520 on my 600MHz 256MB computer, and it is a disaster. Running live cd, with a save file, it is very, very slow.
When I boot up, and let it settle for a few minutes, I start Top. Top shows less than 50% cpu idle time, with the active time roughly shared between usr and sys. However, the cpu usage listed for the running processes is less than 10% total. What's happening?

I'm using X-org with Xorg-High driver. When I downloaded and installed the driver, the message about waiting while it updated the menu and so on was on the screen for SIX minutes. That's typical.

Announcing Here First: Instant Update 001 for Lucid 5.2

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet-packages-lucid/Update_Lucid52-001.pet

This is *not* a crucial bug-fix update because we simply have not found enough bugs to justify that. However it does contain a few nice enhancements.

=> PupControl 1.3 by radky starts with the Setup Icon on the desktop

=> Desksetup Icon Templates by 01micko to make it easy to adjust icon placement on Desktop

=> Quickpet 4.1 - the latest version by 01micko, updates the contents of Puppy Package Manager and SFS Get - There are a lot of nice new packages available - including both LibreOffice3 3.3 and OpenOffice 3.3 prepared by jim1911

=> gparted 0.5.1 - reverted because some people had trouble - if you want 0.6.2 it is in PPM

If you are already using PupComboPlus (which includes PupControl 1.3 and Desksetup) this will install right over it.
You can also install PupComboPlus over this update (LupuNews -> Fun tab).
.

LMMS is also in Puppy Package Manager. Maybe you could see if that worked. It was created for Lucid 5.0 but nobody has mentioned it since Wink It seems like LMMS should be in Puppy Studio--I bet they have it working. Maybe they could help us if we need it Wink

Puppy Studio is available from LupuNews Play tab.
