A moment the recommendation was to add xforcevesa nomodeset at the kernel line.
Is this still recommended?

Just click on the Pwidgets icon, then select the widget you need to change in the left-hand column and choose File|Edit | Show widget config files. (If two files open in Geany, close the script as you want the config file with conky settings. For the calendar this is /usr/local/pwidgets/widgets/configs/calendar. On line 48 you'll see a font size=9. That is the default font for the widget. Change that to 11 or so, save the file and click Apply at bottom of the Pwidgets dialog. Titles and graphics may vary from the default font, and are defined the the TEXT section at the bottom of each config file. Experiment until it looks right. You don't need to understand all the settings to change font sizes.Sylvander wrote:2. But the above has had no effect upon the text used in the widgets.
3. Also...
How should I eliminate the Pwidgets icon from the pinboard?
You can drag the Pwidgets icon wherever you like or right-click | Remove item. But I wouldn't remove it unless you have stopped Pwidgets, as the icon is the quickest way to open the settings or start/stop Pwidgets.
The CPU and RAM graphs are part of the dashboard__bottom cluster. Their positions are defined in /root/.pwidgets/profiles/dashboard___bottom/pwidgets-exec_conky. To raise or lower them, change the 'y' values, maybe 102 to 122, save and re-apply Pwidgets.

I use it because my ATI card isn't supported by KMS. It is a generic fallback for cards that don't work with KMS, to avoid booting to a blank screen.Béèm wrote:A moment the recommendation was to add xforcevesa nomodeset at the kernel line.

If you have an Intel card, you can either leave it out (LHP 502 has /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf) or follow it with i915.modeset=1, as later options override earlier, and select the Intel driver in xorgwizard. Maybe Q5sys or ICPUG can correct/expand on this advice for Intel graphics.
If you are using KMS, and find the text-mode fonts really small add video=800x600 (or another resolution as desired) to your kernel line.

Driver used: radeon
I barely know that KMS is Kernel Mode Setting and don't know if it is used. I didn't do anything for this.
I remember LH was working and at a certain moment on a new release I had problems and had to add this parameters for the laptop to work.
So maybe I should continue to use them.

CUPS, flash, geany, unzip, print to ps
LH 5.02 G looks great! I really appreciate the option to load sfs-files during boot. The first time I tried this, however, I got puzzling results. I attempted to load an sfs-file by typing "y" at the prompt, but the querry was simply repeated on the same line. After the third failure, it occurred to me that the German keyboard, which has the positions of "y" and "z" reversed had not yet loaded so I was actually typing "z"! Perhaps, you could alter the script to accept "y" or "z" as "yes". This would take care of all qwerty, qwertz and azerty keyboards.
CUPS- I had the same problem installing my printer as with LH 5.00G: DILLO produced a screen full of error messages when I attempted to select a printer. I had to switch to Opera 11 to access CUPS via the familiar http://localhost:631. I succeeded in setting up my HP 6P printer, but printing a test page failed with the error message: "/invalidfont in findfont". I tried printing a document from Abiword. And, once again, this worked. Still no idea why, but a useful hint for anyone who runs into the same problem.
Flashplayer- I downloaded the lastest adobe flashplayer when prompted to do so, but it failed to cooperate with Opera 11. Rolling back to flashplayer 9-1.0.124.0-1 via the PPM solved the problem. Same problem, same solution in LH 5.00G.
geany - The geany-bug (geany fails to open files on remote drive mounted with smb/cifs) has at last been squashed. See: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 0&start=30 Barry has incorporated the change in pnethood 0.6.6.1 see: http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02081.
Editing /usr/local/apps/pnethood/func_mount from ROX in LH is a bit tricky. You have to right-click on the pnethood folder and choose "Look Inside".
unzip- This fix to pnethood also takes care of the problem with unzip, which also failed on remote drives.
print file to ps - does not set the upper margin properly. This has been a persistent problem since Puppy 4.31. Of course, you can print directly to pdf, but printing first to ps and then using the ps2pdf utility produces much smaller files. Especially when printing from OpenOffice 3.21.
Finally, I should note that updating the driver for my nvidia GeForce FX 5200 from nv to 173.14.25 improved performance dramatically - from 120 fps to 2400 fps on glxgears.

1. Working on my son's laptop = Dell Inspiron6400.
2. Copied my own LHPsave file [my Flash Drive copy] to a suitably named folder inside his top folder on his WinXP NTFS partition on his internal HDD.
3. As per help given here by yourself, I tried to increase the size of text for the Pwidgets Calendar, but unlike last time on my own PC's LHPsave copy on my internal HDD [also copied from my Flash Drive], it didn't do the necessary [text size remains unchanged even after reboot].
4. Another oddity:
Down at bottom right in the system tray...
After each boot to the desktop...
Both Glipper, and CPU_usage _display->[is that what it is?] do not display.
If I restart x-windows, Glipper [but not CPU_usage] is there.
p.s. Lighthouse looks REALLY GOOD on my son's laptop; surely he will LOVE this.

Re: e-Sword Installer updated
Unfortunately, Rick has changed his web site index so that the only link to the download area is from the new Module Downloader in e-Sword v9.8. I asked Rick to restore his web site to allow access from a browser, however, his reply was that I need to roll back to e-Sword 9.7.2. Fortunately, I discovered a workaround, you just need to enter complete link for a browser download as follows:tazoc wrote:Hi Jim,
Yes, you're right, try it now. 9.7.2 still works in LHP 5.00 G. 9.8.2 for 5.02 should d/l OK now, though I had to install twice before it worked; I will do some more testing tomorrow to see if the free space check needs to be adjusted up. There's a new e-Sword feature now to d/l and track add-ons within e-Sword, but I haven't been able to get it working in Wine.

drblock2,
Thank you for the helpful feedback. I will script to accept z for y and try to update pnethood. I didn't plan for dillo to be used with CUPS. The idea was to choose a full-featured browser, then run CUPS. That is why the default browser is LHP Update, not dillo! Should I change the printer setup scripts to request another browser, if dillo is the current default?
New Opera 11.00 pets here (Localization is separated from the main Opera Pet. The NLS pets are only for country/locales other than en_US.)
Opera should be able to use the latest Flash. Please give me a URL for testing the new Opera 11 with Flash. I've tried it at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/, espn.com and disney.com and it seems OK. I can't imagine why Opera would need Flash 9 instead than 10.1.
Jim1911,
Thanks for the tips and for reaching out to Rick. I presume Rick's built-in e-Sword Module Downloader works--just not in Wine. Hopefully future updates of Wine will resolve this. Another option, of course is running e-Sword in Windows with VirtualBox.
Béèm,
It really is Wine 1.3.11. Ever since 1.3.10 came out some places report 1.3.7 and I don't know why. I double-checked all of the binaries and they are the latest. The About tab of winecfg is correct at least.

Curious? Haven't tried it yet, but care to offer some explanation, please? Opera is Norwegian. they tend to speak English English up there and we have extremely strong historical, ethnic(!), social and economic ties with our Nordic friends. Why would there be a US default and how does an NLS .pet pertain?New Opera 11.00 pets here (Localization is separated from the main Opera Pet. There are problems with video on a SiS Mirage I chip.
The default Xorg never works - black screen.; it's the only Puppy to fail like this for me. Nothing is able to recover this, eg CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE
AutoX does work, but sometimes, unpredictably, it renders with distrotion; this cannot be cured by any means, eg log-out, xorgwizard, VESA swap or desktop swap.
None of this is HW-related as all other distro are OK?

tazoc,
I do think it would be well to warn the user not to attempt to set up CUPS with dillo. Otherwise confusion results if the user decides to set up CUPS first and worry about the browser update later. In any case, dillo, should not be listed as an option for printer set up if it does not work with CUPS. Perhaps midori might be a better choice for a utility browser. Technosaurus's minimal package: http://puppy-development.googlecode.com ... 2.2-92.pet works with CUPS and reads html-files from the file system, but unceremoniously closes if you try to go on line or load the wrong kind of file.
My hands-down choice for a utility viewer is the amazing Puppy HTML Viewer from Puppy 4.3.1. Not only does it handle CUPS flawlessly, but goes on line and even plays Flash video!
I had to roll back the FlashPlayer for http://www.nytimes.com. Check the video on the front page. This might have something to do with my static Opera installation. I just dowloaded other (DEB) from Opera's website (final build 1156) and unpacked the tar.gz. No idea why the pet should work when the static installation requires the roll back.

Several ways to solve your update problem:
1. Use Opera Link. Just open Opera, click on Help|Support and Opera Link in Add-Ons for instructions. With Opera Link you can upload your settings from the old version and then download them to your new installation - super if you have Opera installed on several machines.
2. The opera configuration files are contained in /root/.opera. The essential files are: bookmarks.adr, global_history.dat, notes.adr, operaprefs.ini, search.ini, speeddial.ini. Copy these from your old installation to the new one (overwriting the existing files).
3. Use a static installation (see remarks above). This allows you to use the same configuration on all the puppies on a particular machine (any changes you make in one puppy apply to all) and install on a new machine by simply copying over the Opera directory. You need to create a launch script - simply the path to the opera binary - and put it on your desktop. (I can give explicit instructions if necessary.)
