Ah playdayz! Thanks for giving spup a spin.

Now I wonder if your trick of having "modprobe fbcon" in /etc/rc.d/rc.local would fix your issue? Of course you can't try because you can't save... maybe booting "pfix=nox", then running depmod && modprobe fbcon , then running xorgwizard might give you the ability to create a save and if so resolve an issue! It works fine on my old radeon out of the box, so it may not even be a video driver issue. The other alternative is to force "vesa" I guess. Darn, I did think that that was a nouveau only issue. Perhaps it is a modesetting issue in which case you would need an added kernel paramater to boot (and shutdown) successfully. I'll dig around to see what that paramater might be.

EDIT: I just checked lsmod and fbcon is loaded ok for me, I guess check it loaded :? So that leaves the kernel or vesa.

Ok I just discovered this from TazOC's LHP thread,

Code: Select all

radeon.modeset=0
Here, so maybe try

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=ram radeon.modeset=0
HTH!

Oh yes, still needing an ATI-fglrx pet :)

Stripe, your python may come in handy. I have been stuffing around with bluez, the linux bluetooth stack and while the backend appears to work fine I'm having trouble finding a suitable frontend. bluezgnome from the bluez developer works, but it is hamstrung, in that it only works one way, computer to device, no good. I can't get gnome-bluetooth to compile as it needs the latest glib which breaks a heap of other stuff, will have to wait till Slackware upgrade for that one. There are a few home-brew QT apps out there, but I'll leave them alone, kbluetooth is just plain too big which leaves blueman, dependent on python and py-gtk. It may well be the best option, though I seriously dislike python, it's slow and bloated, but if it works then why not? We'll see.. .(I might even write a gtkdialog frontend for bluetooth, will be hairy though!)

Cheers

EDIT: I forgot to post this gtk theme I hacked out of the polished blue theme, it suits Eucalyptus and the green/earthy default look'n'feel.

EDIT: I aslo forgot a critical fix to bash4.. I forgot to symlink it to /usr/bin which breaks ldd (..and who knows what else).

Code: Select all

ln -sf /bin/bash /usr/bin/bash

radeon.modeset=0 did the trick. In /etc/modprobe.conf we put a file named i915.conf with the contents 'i915 modeset=1' that made the intel drivers behave. Maybe a file like that with 'radeon modeset=0' would work for all???

I appended radeon.modeset=0 to the menu.lst line that ends psubdir=spup-055.

Now I need the kernel sources. I'll look in the first message. Thanks.

Got the kernel sources. ATI Catalyst 10-12 is running on my computer in Spup. Do you happen to have Slackware makepkg? I have not been able to get in the Slackware repo for a month or more. Thanks.

Just stopped by to grab the new theme....... :)

Nothing bad to report. Other than no Nvidia driver for this old graphics card, everything looks good. The Mesa pkg works well enough anyway.

Great job...this is a really solid release.

I use this one in Fluppy, is it good to use it in Spup too?

i915 modeset=1
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

There is no need of it because a file exists (as playdayz alluded to in lupu_520) that runs that line already in spup.

playdayz

There is also a radeon file in /etc/modprobe.conf/ with 'radeon modeset=1'.. I'll need to take a look at that to make sure resetting that value to "0" doesn't break the older radeons or else I'll have to come up with some sort of magic trick! Sorry, don't have makepkg but I intend to find it and include that, and the other slackware tools including amigo's src2pkg on the devx.

Hey 01micko, here's my new pet-project: PetThing

Basically, it's a simple and straight-forward Quickpet-like application, built in UNIX-style: it blends my fetchpet and browser_installer packages, so basically I just wrote a "frontend" for the former.

This tool is built to be 100% generic: check /usr/local/petthing/petthingrc - this file has a list of packages in this format:

Code: Select all

category name:package,package,package+dependency,package
You can add more packages to one button using a "+" sign. In my case, I added my firefox_libs package to Opera, because Flash and other plugins won't work without some Mozilla libraries.

The PET has a configuration file with packages from my spup repo, so some packages won't work on spup unless you do some dirty hacks 8)

Hi all

Iguleder that looks cool, love the gui.

01micko, I just compiled the python pets for the ppm. so it is up to date.

could we please have a cull on the menu entries as out of the 149 applications quite a few are doubled up mainly the wizards and some of the desktop setup progs are already included in the wizard wizard.

and in 6 months of continually using puppy I have only ever used 33 out of the 149, do we really need them all or could some be put in the ppm? and some menu & size bloat could be removed at the same time.

just an idea (sorry  )

OK, here's an improved version.

Key improvements:
- Doesn't show packages you already have installed
- The browser installer shows the browser icon
- Different text for browser installer/main gui
- The browser installer displays the package description instead of the name

It's so cool!

Yippee. I think I got it.

Here is ATI_fglrx-10-10-k2.6.34.1.

http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/ATI_f ... .34.1-spup

01micko, you might want to put your own Slackware mesa-utils in--that's /usr/bin/glxdemo,glxinfo,glxgears, and glxheads. The ones included in the pet are from Lucid. Or just send me the Slackware mesa-utils.

playdayz -makepkg is attached

Iguleder -I'll be putting some of your themes etc in the spup repo, but afaic quickpet type things are a lupu thing which is what sets it apart. In this spup I'm going to focus more on making PPM more user friendly and we've made a start with zigbert's new gui

Stripe -I intend to leave the menus as is. Sorry. But I am going to revamp the desk icon situation. One of the biggest complaints you see about puppy is the clutter on the desktop. Rather than alienate purists I intend to have it both ways... that is you can choose between the current scheme, a minimal or bare, except I'm leaving drive icons, mainly for simplicity.

yarddog -Iguleder compiled deadbeef, Iguleder? Want to do one with cd enabled?

Cheers

Thanks for that playdayz

Billtoo, who installed the ati driver himself kept getting "vesa" reported as the driver (even though acceleration was fine) which caused an issue with mplayer wanting to always run in the xv (?) mode, where it wouldn't go fullscreen. The code is in /usr/sbin/mplayershell, he ended up commenting line 15.

I wonder how your code in the pinstall would work for vesa users? I guess not.

Again this is why we ditched nvidia-xconfig in spup, same thing, messes up xorg.conf

Those proprietary config files aren't aware of Puppy's ways! Shame on those companies!

Cheers

01micko,

I'm having fun with your spup, but have run into a problem trying to use your little pets2sfs program. I can't remember the correct syntax to use with it as you can see here.

Code: Select all

pets2sfs - pupappls-1 /mnt/sdb1/appls_new_install/PupShutdown
Please provide an example.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim if you place all of the pets you wish to convert to a sfs file into the same directory, say, /root/jim then from the same directory type: pets2sfs jim-01 the file jim-01.sfs will be created in the same directory.

Type pets2sfs --help for help.

Please ignore what was here. The ATI_fglrx driver for spup is now working correctly.
