I still have this annoying issue.Béèm wrote:Loosing connection
With the 516 and while in a holiday resort I still had the issue I reported before that the nameserver entry in /etc/resolv.conf just disappears, resulting in a browser message 'try again'
I had this quite often, but blamed first the connection.
Then I installed there Light House 500G. I didn't have the issue anymore.
So I went to 516 again and immediately I had that issue.
I didn't report it here yet as I saw new versions had come out.
So now I am in 519 and just got the issue.
The nameserver entry in /etc/resolv.conf had disappeared.
I pushed 'try again' for several times and all of a sudden I got the next screens of the site I was in.
I rechecked the nameserver entry in /etc/resolv.conf again and it was there again.
Once a connection is made, does the WiFi support try to reconnect?
In any case, I use Fluppy and now Wary 5.0 also and I don't have this issue and as stated with Light House 500G neither.
This is something which worries me.
I just got it in 5.2 final several times in a row.
Got it one time yesterday also.
When looking with network status information, I have no IP on the network eth0 device any more and no entry for the nameserver in /etc/resolv/conf.
Now I had one case where I found a APIPPA address for the eth0 and the nameserver entry missing in /etc/resolv.conf.
I have the feeling something triggers a dhcpcd with the above results described.
Any idea? (I have and reported this issue since 5.1.1)

Hi Béèm, Have you tried to use Network Wizard instead of Simple Network Setup, or vice versa?Loosing connection

And oh yes, depending on your browser, go to preferences and turn off and turn of any kind of proxy detection.
USB boot problem
I tried lupu 520 from USB stick (using Unetbootin).
When I try to boot from USB with default startup, my PC hangs at "searchig for save files, searching deeper" returns to the commandline.
When I manually start (press F2) with "puppy pmedia=usbflash" it work okay.
But it is rather annoying ...
This happens on a AMD64 desktop, but also on a eee pc netbook.

You may be missing some libraries. Doing what Playdayz says will tell you.playdayz wrote:Open a terminal and enterHere is a nightly build of Chromium 10 from today JAN 06.

seems to install but doesn't start Is there something else I need to install?and see what it says. It might not run on certain processors.Code: Select all
# /usr/lib/chrome-linux/chrome
For anyone who is interested this pet works on Wary 500 too if the necessary libraries are added. Nice work Playdayz.
I've been chasing a small bug that was annoying me on my computer, although I don't think anyone else mentioned the problem.
For 520 I went the upgrade route to my frugal install keeping the save file but just replacing the sfs etc.
However on each reboot I noticed firewallstate showed the firewall off, even though I previously turned it on. I had to keep running the wizard after each boot.
The line was there in /etc/rc.d/rc.local but was not being executed.
I had loaded Startmount pet and this inserted the Startmount line to rc.local as usual.
Now, oddly it was borking the rc.local. After the line for Startmount was run the script exited without running the Firewall start line.
I just moved the Startmount line to after the firewall line and all is well. It now starts the Firewall on reboot and Startmount.
Don't know if it's a one off on my computer or else no-one reported problems.

I see you have added a comment at Softpedia saying 5.2 is based on Maverick. I don't think so. The name gives you a clue.

01micko,
Mick,
Firewall non start.
It appears to be a Startmount syntax problem combined with the way Busybox, Ash, Bash behave with "exec".
I believe it may fork and exit, hence the firewall part of script not running. I tried Bash and that did the same with "exec".
I changed "exec" to . (dot) to keep within the current environment and it starts the firewall straight after.

Upgrade Went Well!
Just completed an upgrade on my T22 IBM Laptop from 511 to 520
All went very well, only lost two Icons in the upgrade, all other files were intact from 511. Took about 10-minutes.
For those of you with older laptops (like the one I have) 520 puts you in... nah... "Beyond" a Windows 7 catagory operating system!!!!

It will not work until Barry makes changes to improve the process!
I feel your pain too, but that is the facts we have to live with for now.
You are wasting time trying to make borked save file updates work.
Barry's blog has several posts concerning the issue.

bigpup,
I don't know whether that was aimed for me but I've never had a problem updating a save file on any of my frugal editions.
What I was talking about was a small startup introduced bug when Startmount is installed.

No not at you, but how do you know for sure the update did not cause the problem?tasmod wrote:bigpup,

Even Barry says it is very dependent on what programs are installed, how they where installed, what changes where made prior to the update etc....
Your experience in the past with frugal updates is at best luck not 100% solid proof. What deep inside those updates, was messed up, you may never see.
My experience is just the opposite. I have had no good luck updating frugal installs. Sure some seem to work, but they always have something wrong some place.
Just look through this topic and any place someone talks about a frugal update there is a but.

Yes playdayz, I did try the network wizard instead of the SNS. As it didn't improve I continued to use SNS as it is proposed at the first setup each time.playdayz wrote:Hi Béèm, Have you tried to use Network Wizard instead of Simple Network Setup, or vice versa?Loosing connection

I had this quite often, but blamed first the connection.

I will redo the setup with the Network wizard and work like this.
I also did set the preferences to direct connect to the internet. It didn't help then and now I see the setting is reversed to 'use system setting'.
I did set again to direct connect to internet.
But still it don't explain why Lighthouse and Fluppy work directly without this issue.

This may depend. I tested a certain method and achieved good results--the save file did update properly.Update of a save file in frugal installs does not work!

I copied the appropriate files from the cd into the frugal directory that I wanted to update which left the old save file with the new files from 5.2. That frugal directory already had a grub menu.lst entry so I booted it and the update took place.
Alternatively one could make a new frugal install, make the grub men.lst, and then copy a save file into that new directory and boot.
What does not work (in my experience) is to boot a LiveCD of 5.2 and let it try to update a save file that is *in a frugal directory*. It might update but it doesn't rename anything correctly or copy the proper files into the proper location.
