|
Firedog 3.6.12
a remastered version of Firefox, for Puppy Linux, built for speed and usability

Features nicely integrated GUI, faster browsing, mail client, image and ad blocking, video download and much more.
It also comes with the 'Pup-Advert-Blocker' tool, so you can block even more ads.
This is based on the Firefox 3.6 pet package from here
This version has been upgraded to 3.6.12, re-configured and then rebranded.
Do not install this if you have Firefox installed - Firefox will be overwritten!
Firedog will install itself as the default browser.
Features:
Firedog 3.6 should browse faster, great ease of use, with a minimal GUI and better support for slow connections.
Added these Addons:
- AdBlockPlus 1.3.1 - block online adverts
- ContextSearch 0.45 - add all search engines to right click options
- Download in Tabs 0.0.9 - downloads open in a tab
- Extended Copy Menu 1.6.1 - more copy options (right click)
- Flash Video Download 0.1 - a simple, working video downloader for many sites
- Flashblock 1.5.13 - disables flash and flash video until you click 'play'
- Image Zoom 1.4.4 - zoom in or out on any images on the page (right click an image)
- Privacy Plus 1.0.1 - allows remove Flash LSO cookies
- QuickDrag 2.0.2.1 - drag some text to search for it, or a url to visit it
- QuickImage 1.3.1 - enable or disable all or 3rd party images from status bar
- RightToClick 2.8.1 - forces pages to enable right click menus (if disabled by javascript)
- Save File To 2.0.2 - easier saving of files, based in filetype
- Simple Mail 2.74 - built in email client
- Tiny Menu 2.0.2 - a more compact menu, in one 'Menu' item (top-left)
Edited default settings:
- changed GUI to use minimal screen space
- more compact menu, toolbar, address bar, search bar and bookmarks.. in 1 row
- default pages and search bar more puppy friendly
- URL Autocomplete to true, 1 click to highlight url enabled
- more bookmarks and bookmarklets added by default
- faster browsing settings - more pipelining, higher max http requests, increased timeouts and so on
- low RAM usage on minimize option enabled
- disabled delay when installing addons
- added option to remove flash LSO (cookies) when closing Firedog
- highlight some text, click the 'Go' button (top-right) -> 'Translate to ...', it will translate it in Google Translate

Update |
|
Thanks, sc0ttman. Firedog is just what I was looking for.
For your information: when I received an update notification, (it said "update available for Firedog") the partial update could not be applied, so a full update was installed. All of the Puppy branding disappeared, but so far the functions appear to be unchanged.

Yes, the branding is lost, but that's it.. Everything else remains the same..

Replacing Firefox |
|
What is the best method of replacing firefox? Apparently this will upgrsde firedog but I have firefox on my machines at work on high speed but would like to change.
Will the new firedog work on other distros?
Thanks for doing the upgrade, I know it was a lot of work and time invested.
Merry Christmas

The best way would be to remove firefox entirely... After backing up bookmarks, etc..
That basically means deleting /usr/lib/firefox and /root/.mozilla
...then install firedog. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS

Re: Replacing Firefox |

On my machine at work I deleted ff and installed firedog, no worries.
I tried to get firedog to update on my dialup machine at home-the one I am writing this on. That did not work so I tried to overwroie it and that did not work either. I even went in and started the program from the new firedog desktop in root packages and it still opens the old firedog 2.
Looks like I will have to nuke both of them now and start over. Is it necessary to leave the four libs from seamonkey as with the original firedog? Really looking forward to seeing is there is any noticeable loss of speed, at the office I have cable so its a moot point there.
Thanks again Scott
Wishing you and yours a happy , healthy and prosperous New Year.

You can leave the 4 seamonkey libs, it wont hurt.. (I think... )
Apart from that, I would recommend fully removing firedog and the .mozilla folder before updating..

One more thing to make it perfect!! The Opera ability to fit the picture to the width of the browser with one click on the bottom of the page.

I'll have a look at Opera, and see what I can find for Firedog on the mozilla addons site...

Re: Replacing Firefox |

In case anyone is under the impression that it is now impossible to download youtube videos and other such things in 431 as I have heard it is a piece of cake with FireDog and VLC.
Download Helper is one way : http://www.downloadhelper.net/
Tested it today by downloading a flv file from youtube on dialup and it played perfectly in VLC with no conversion necessary. Sure there are other ways to do it but since I have heard people have gone so far as to switch Distros just for this minor problem, the youtube downloader no longer working , I though it was worth posting,
FireDog works!
If anyone finds a fix for the included downloader please let me know, it does make Puppy seem easier to people unfamiliar with real operating systems. It might be a good idea to preload Download Helper or a similar app in Firedog,

Firedog youtube downloads work (for me at least) using the addon which is installed by default..
You must first load and start playing the video before you start downloading it.

You Tube -Back Button |
|
I did not notice the youtube downloader already there . Does it work with dialup? Usually when I download from youtube I am at home and on dialup .
No big deal either way the other one works.
What is bothering me in Wary is there is only one direction arrow in FireDog. I can go back and forth but that is all.
MENU <--- or MENU ---> but no <----MENU---->

Yeah, that's a 'feature' of Firedog - it only shows a back button, if there are pages to go back to, and likewise for the forward button.
Basically, the standard Firefox shows disabled back and forward buttons, but Firedog hides them when they are disabled - just another little trick to add screen space..
Firedog never hides the back or forward buttons if are actually clickable.
This behaviour can be removed by deleting the appropriate entries in userChrome.css (in /root/.mozilla/[your profile]/chrome... I think!)
EDIT: and yes, the youtube downloader should work fine on dialup, but slower , obviously.

Hey scottman
Thanks
If you have time to kill, you can think about updating this as Firefox updates
