Upgrading is still the black sheep with puppy.
A certain moment, I upgraded also from beta to beta and Barry told me not to do this and only attempt to do an upgrade from release to release.

It would be nice to know what playdayz thinks about this.

As I vaguely remember Barry gave very clear explanations why it could fail to do such updates on his blog.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Man o man, I am doing updates over and over ;-)

1. Fresh installs don't have any update problems ;-)
2. Live CD updates of the lupusave file seem to not have problems.
3. Full install updates seem to be OK also (more testing coming up)
4. Frugal updates are the black sheep.
Before any attempt at a frugal update--***Back up the lupusave file***
Manual frugal update--Copy the new files into an existing Lupu folder or, copy the lupusave file into a folder that you have just created by doing a frugal install. This fails some percentage of the time for unknown reasons.
Automatic frugal update--no such thing. If you boot a LiveCd it will find and update a lupusave file .but it will not update the grub bootloader men, and it won't copy the lupu-xxx.sfs into the folder with the lupusave file. You will end up doing manual file copy anyway.

I am trying to compile some tips for updating.

Updating release to release would be smoother probably because updating is tested more in the release.
.
Before any attempt at an update, uninstall LXDE if it is installed.
After upgrade, Sylpheed -> Configuration -> Common Preferences -> Details -> External Commands -> Web browser -> sensible-browser '%s' This enables the Sylpheed Help.

Thanks playdayz to confirm there are no upgrade problems with Lucid.
Since the remark from Barry, I only do fresh installs.

I installed 519 as FRUGAL Lin'N'Win as usual. (last install was 516).
Could it be that 519 is snappier then 516? At least I have that impression.
Then it is a nice New Year's gift. 8)

Manual upgrade of frugal install from 511 to 519.
Booted into Openbox as expected, internet, sound and display good. No Icewm, unable to start.
"Exit to prompt" in the menu....does nothing. The only widget able to run is the clock.
That 511 was using icewm, right? That is exactly the behavior if the file /etc/windowmanager is not changed to openbox. For 520 we have a different method--but I will be able to check before release. Thanks.

"Manual" frugal update means moving the lupusave.2fs into a directory with the new2 519 files, (or vice versa), am I right?

Ah, did you have lxde installed by any chance?
Lets see..... Yes, 511 was using icewm.
I copied the existing 511 lupusave.2fs into a directory with the new vmlinuz, initrd.gz and lupu_519.sfs. Booted into 519 and upgraded.
No, didn't have lxde installed.

Testing....

ttuuxxx,
Thanks for emelfm2-0.7.4. This is one of my favorite file managers. :)

I wonder if you would consider making a pet of tuxcommander 0.6.70 for Lucid-5.2. The Debian and Ubuntu tuxcmd packages work great in Lucid-5.1, but return a runtime error in recent beta releases of Lucid-5.2.
Thanks.

as I was compiling a package it couldn't find config.guess and config.sub so I went to /usr/share/automake-1.11 and sure enough it wasn't there and so I compiled it and it was there, So I made a new automake-1.11.pet that has all the parts plus it has a couple system links that are needed by some apps when compiling, basically it make the devX more universal and stable.

3. Lupu seems to be able to do the following perfectly when most other Puppies don't:
i.e. ALL partitions [of connected/powered devices] are being detected and displayed on the desktop. :D 8)
Usually, that is the case. However, I have one case that bucks this smooth operation.
I connect a backup 250gb USB drive to my laptop Dell Latitude D400. The connection is done via a 1.1 USB hub. When the drive is powered up, the drive's partitions icons come up fine after any clean puppy boot. However, when I click on one of these icons, to mount, these USB drive partition icons disappear and the "mount" dialog box comes up. When I power down the USB drive and back up, the drive's partition icons appear and I can mount them normally (by clicking on the partition icon). It's an issue with mounting a USB drive, during a boot.
It's important to note that the laptop's internal ATA drive's partitions exhibit no such behavior. When these partitions come up, on a boot, they behave as expected.

Why won't it copy the lupu-*.sfs file? Is there a good reason?

Hi I spent a couple of hours on it, it uses freepascal compiler which is a very large pain on puppy, Its about 50 packages that you have to compile and install, I did the ones that were actually needed and then still had errors, so then I tried all ubuntu packages and the same, then I tried a precompiled bin and it worked just fine, So here's a link to it, just click on it and extract it then click on the bin. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tuxc ... 2?download

ttuuxxx, I understand automake going into the devx. I still need to know if your cmake is a replacement or a supplement. Thanks.

ttuuxxx,

Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to answer my request, and I apologize for sending you on a circular journey. :)

When linked to available plug-in modules, Tuxcommander is actually quite capable and is similar in form and function to the Total Commander file manager of Windows fame. I’m sure many forum members will find it useful in Lucid-5.2.

Thanks again!

Its a 100% replacement for the broken Cmake in the devx.

Been experimenting with upgrading my 511 frugal on the K6 machine to 519. I made a copy of the existing frugal to a new directory, then manually upgraded it by copying the 519 initrd.gz, vmlinuz and lupu-519.sfs files to it. Used Grub4Dos Config to point at it and rebooted. After going through the update process it got to a usable desktop and brought up the Personalize Settings dialogue. Uninstalled a couple of update Pets which were no longer needed due to those versions being in 519 and rebooted again and it still works. Only thing that didn't make the transition smoothly was Pwidgets 2.3.1, which I had to uninstall and reinstall.

Next to see if the update process from 511 to 519 works with the LiveCD install on the Pentium D machine - had some problems with 518.
Zhaan - AMD K6 2 500, 512MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 VR. Full install Wary 5.5 HardInfo Report
Merlin - Core i5-4590, 8GB RAM, Radeon R9 270X. Slacko 5.7.0

Yes indeed. Tested 2 ways.First, having Icewm active in 511 and secondly having JWM as the wm in 511. Manually copying the save file into the directory containing the 519 files.
Sent 01micko a detailed pm....seems to still be problems if icewm is the wm in 511, the JWM upgrade went much, much better.
Actually, getting ready to try again(testing).....patched 519 files and the 511 save file with JWM as the default wm.

Hi James C

I sent your report to playdayz

For some weird reason things seem to go better if you boot off the cd. I'm trying to figure out why.

Thanks for testing.

Cheers
