Think Linux Operating System -New Upgrade 2.01

TL/Os by BigMike

Think Linux Puplet is based on Quirky 1.2

Goals of TL/Os

TL/Os is designed with new users in mind so they can learn to use puppy linux with minimum frustration. All the new user has to do is boot up and begin to use the operating system. TL/Os has been preconfigured and needed programs added so it runs out of the box.
It is also designed for advanced users so there is not a lot of configuring to do, just add the components they seek to use.

Another purpose of this puplet is to give it a new look rather than change or modify the inner workings of Quirky Linux. This leads to less bugs and allows the original operating system to run with greater stability.

TL-Os is also designed to run portable apps windows programs and other smaller windows programs.

Hopefully TL-Os will run on your hardware with the stability and speed it has on mine. I hope you Enjoy TL-Os.

A New Look and Icon Themes
In giving TL/Os a new look, the following icons themes were changed:

The directory icons were changed to a "mac like" theme.
The system icons were changed to the "glazy" kde theme.

Window Manager
The window manager was changed back to JWM as the defualt rather than open box.

Default Chat Client

The default chat client was changed from ayttm to Pidgin.

Fonts Added
Ms core fonts were added to the xorg path for better rendering in web browsers and also to wine for smoother fonts.

The following pets and programs were added

pidgin 2.6.5.sfs Yahoo works, with "scsa.msg.yahoo.com" as pager server and uncheck ssl for aol to work. Msn certificated was updated.
firefox 3.5.pet Was updated to 3.6.13
ayttm-0.6.1-q1.pet an earlier version had to be reinstalled to avoid crashing
geany-0.18-p4. had to be installed the top window frame was missing
flashplayer10-10.0.42.34 a plugin to run video and apps in internet browsers
wine-1.1.39-p4 runs windows programs
wine_gecko-1.0.0 runs windows programs
PortableAppsMenu.exe auto detects windows programs
Startmount-0.5.1 mounts drives and programs at startup
pwidgets-2.2.7 tiny desktop applications or widgets
jre-1.6.0.20 the Java Runtime Envronment
Pmenu-0.2 a Puppy Menu Editor
sakura-1 a console with transparency
tonicpoint viewer a presentation viewer for power point presentations
xine-lib-1.1.18.1-q1.pet a video application
xine_extra_codecs-1.pet extra codecs including xvid and wmv
xine-lib-1.1.18.1-q1 dependencies for xine
seamonkey_libs_tiny-1.1.2.pet dependencies for xine

I Also Added My Puppy Linux Resources

I collected some resources to make it easier to find information on puppy linux.

BigMikes' Puppy Linux Resources.
file:///usr/share/doc/resources/bigmike-resources.html

I compiled a collection of puppy linux repositories where you can obtain puppy linux packages called "pets". There are also older puppy packages called dot pups.

It is hard to add all repositories to the puppy package manager and the package manager does not list all the pets that are in the official repos. Consequently, I made a web page called puppy linux web-get that lists all the official repositories. When you use web-get open the download with puppy package manager and then install the pet. This web page also includes of older official pups and non-official repositories of puppy pets, sfs and libs etc.

Puppy Linux Web-Get

I also compiled a collection of seven, puppy linux search engines. The search engines are an aide, especially to find the latest pets which are on the forums and also to find solutions to problems or configurations to enhance puppy linux.

Puppy Linux Search Engines

To find updates on these resources check the "/usr/share/doc/resources" - a folder which contains scripts that connect to the internet and to the original pages which are updated occasionly.

Linux Manual

I also added a linux man page with a link to the interenet and one linux man search engine.

#7 Post by BigMike »

Hope Y'all like it so far it runs fast and stable for me. Java must be installed after remastering, so I have added a link on the desktop. I also added the face book plugin for Pidgin.

Coming soon more refinements.

Let me know what of any issues or what u would like to see added.

"TL/Os is designed with new users in mind so they can learn to use puppy linux with minimum frustration. "

Yes that is good. Very good.

Unfortunately it does not work if one already have a standard Quirky 1.4 with a pupsave file becuse dispite that subdir is quirky14 the TL/OS still just load that pupsavefile at first boot without even asking if it is okay to boot it or not.

And you need to be a very experienced user to know how to prevent it from happen next time too.

I am not sure how to try your Thjnk Linux now when it boot that pupsavefile and then goes into panic failing to boot.

Should rename it to what? Does it help to put an old in front or after the name?

6 AM now so I am a bit irritated. Too little sleep. So I very much appreciate your efforts but you forgot how to protect us Newbies from this kind of irritating experiences. :)

Suggest something so I can boot your TL/OS

Edit

Now I get it. You need to write that if one already have a Quirky savefile on the computer then one should add at first boot on the kernel line this pfix=ram then it don't look for that pupsavefile. :)

Sorry neither Fluppy nor Luci nor Lupu do such things as Quirky does.

Booting Quirky 1.4

#10 Post by BigMike »

after testing every version of quirky both me and one other user we found that the best version to use is quirky version 1.2. you cannot upgrade TL with quirky 1.4 becuase none of my remastered work will be there

Barry K with each successive version is just trying to make quirky smaller - so a later version is not always better.

It would be better to use TL anew but if you can make your save file work from another version like 1.4 with my TL remaster files that would good. However TL can only be run from the base files of quirky 1.2 which I remastered and not on quirky 1.4

I kind of like your TL but there are some small things that maybe is more about Quirky than what you have put your own taste into.

I fail to get it to chose 1024x768 it either use 1024x600 or 800x600 instead.

the latter is easy on my old eyes but very big and the Wine icon dropped way below the border so that one need to be moved back up but have no knowledge how one do such things.

Then this taste thing. You prefer to let it make thumbs automatically. That is very annoying to a newbie who want that as an opt in and not have to find out where on earth one shut it off.

The icons seems to be extremely big on resolution 800x600 are there anyway to make them half size maybe?

#12 Post by BigMike »

I am not sure what a taste thing is that is producing icons could you explain more.

The icons on the desktop are there so you can choose which ones you want to keep.

Simple network is included go back to the connect icon.

what kind of computer are you using it should grab the right the right video resolution.

Other wise try the full drivers pet see what that does:

http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/mike/ ... ri-7.3.pet

Make sure you don't mix TL with any quirky 1.4 files

I also remastered TL so it would not be specific to my hardware. I made it the way it is because I do not like the official puppy linux icons - I made it first of all for me then for others who would like to try it out

puppy save files

#14 Post by BigMike »

ok nooby read your post again. I see what you meant here.

Unfortunately it does not work if one already have a standard Quirky 1.4 with a pupsave file becuse dispite that subdir is quirky14 the TL/OS still just load that pupsavefile at first boot without even asking if it is okay to boot it or not.

when it boots it should post a numbered choice to each puppy save file - if it screws up it wont.

what you have to do is add code so each puplet will only look for its own save file

on the following line of syslinux add the psubdir

kernel /pup/vmlinuz psubdir=pup

or to grub:

initrd /pup/initrd.gz psubdir="pup"

that should do it for you

Mike thanks for caring about me.

I did rethink it and by myself did came up with the subdir thing

title Puppy Linux tl-os
rootnoverify (hd0,2)
kernel (hd0,2)/tl-os/vmlinuz psubdir=tl-os pfix=fsck
initrd (hd0,2)/tl-os/initrd.gz

But something else was not to my satisfaction. Don't remember could ahve been the 1024x600 when I want it to be 768 instead of 600. I log out and reboot into Think Linux and see why I did not like it.

I get back within five minutes I hope and edit this file.

Rebooting hold breath :)

Ha ha hah

It seems it worked best for me to use 800x600 but that is so big that I feel embarrassed by it. So it is more how it looks and feel when I use it.

It did not keep connection from last time which the other puppies manage to do.

But it worked to get internet rather easy which not all puppies to on this Acer D250

So that speaks for your OS.

Don't get me wrong. It is your baby so I trust you like it. But for somebody else like me that was just curious. What about it makes it a good alternative to the puppies?

Why should I rather use this one than any of the other.

Just me friendly curious. I have to go to bed now so I read your answer tomorrow. 1.40AM here and my eyes feel sandy indeed. :)

Update for pianobar

#18 Post by rokytnji »

Found out how to get pianobar working . The libfaad 2.6 I was using was not good enough to use in Quirky. GrunpyWolfe was nice enough to make a faad. pet that works.

Thanks GrumpyWolfe, Big Mike, and morgonzola for making pianobar a option in all my installs of Puppy Linux.
