Pburn hangs

#1362 Post by neurino »

Pburn hangs when trying to blank a cd/rw in Wary 1.0.2:

Code: Select all

# cdrecord -scanbus
wodim: No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.
(I guess it will not let me burn anything)

worked flawlessly in Wary 030

Any tip?
Thanks for your support

At which stage (exactly) does it hang?

The error message doesn't point me to any specific part of the code.

Thanks

When I click to Blank CD button in main window, another dialog opens saying it's creating the commandline then hangs.

After trying a couple of tries I had the need anyway to blank my cd so I ended using cdrecord directly from commandline.
My error message, which I posted in Wary 102 topic first, points that, on my hardware, cdrecord can't even find any device so could be this that makes Pburn hang?

What I really need, anyway is the ability tho use my cd recorder...

Thanks for your support

I tried to copy a DVD which seemed to confuse PBurn.

The disk is structured as 8 chapters with a size that varies from 250Mb to 1Gb and the total disk space used was just over 4Gb.

The copy/shrink option was unsuitable because it would only copy 1 chapter when all 8 are necessary for the program.

Since the total used space was just over 4Gb I tried the 'Copy complete disk' option but failed with incorrect size calculations.

Not asking for a bugfix or anything, but thought I'd share:

I burnt a data DVD with 4 files, one of which was 1.3GB...
All files burned fine except the big one (1.3GB)...

Does pburn have limits on filesizes which can be burnt?
Just wondering...

I have some problem with pburn in puppy 5.2
this is what I get:

Code: Select all

:-( unable to pread64(2) primary volume descriptor: Input/output error
you most likely want to use -Z option.
what can I do?

Do you have enough temporary storage?

Be aware that the program pdvdrsab in the multimedia menu can rip the DVD for you.

What kind of file is this - VOB or another video format?
Can you burn this file from command-line?
Can you please post a complete burn-log?

A DVD-video created with the Pburn backends, will separate files to 1024kb size. I don't know if the DVD-format supports bigger files? I am not really in to this subject.

The DVD has about 4Gb of data and the 74Gb of free space on my HDD should be sufficient. The problem would seem that Pburn has estimated it needs 141Gb of free space to copy a 4Gb DVD !

I have tried this utility. It has a 'mirror' option that would be ideal but this failed with an unreadable error - the terminal window disappeared instantly it failed. I tried copying the TS_VIDEO directory off the DVD with ROX and then using the pdvdrsab 'burn TS_VIDEO' function - this burnt data on the disk and I could play the VOB files with VLC but the disk would not be recognised as a video DVD. The author has posted to the forum for this utility that he is unable to provide any further support.

I also tried to use Pburn 'video mode' to burn the copied TS_AUDIO and TS_VIDEO files to a disk but the presence of the TS_AUDIO directory confused the command generation like this...

Pburn version 3.3.1

###################################################
COMMAND:
###################################################
Pburn preburn operations
growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0 -dvd-video "/root/edev/temp/audio_ts/
/root/edev/temp"

###################################################
OUTPUT:
###################################################
/root/.pburn/tmp/exec_preburn: line 1: Pburn: command not found
Executing 'mkisofs -dvd-video /root/edev/temp/audio_ts/
/root/edev/temp | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
I: -input-charset not specified, using iso-8859-1 (detected in locale settings)
genisoimage: No such file or directory. Invalid node - '/root/edev/temp/audio_ts/
/root/edev/temp'.
:-( write failed: Input/output error

There are references around the net that some standalone DVD players use the presence of the empty TS_AUDIO directory to verify that a valid DVD is loaded.

Attempting to burn the TS_VIDEO directory alone also failed with similar messages, does Pburn require the parent directory in the burn list or the actual TS_VIDEO directory ?

I am sorry to say that this calculation is done by vobcopy rather that Pburn.

I am aware, and we know that disc-size calculation troubles for some discs in pdvdrsab.

Great catch. I always just added video_ts as audio_ts is empty on my discs. I have fixed the command for next release. You can manually correct it to

Code: Select all

growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0 -dvd-video "/root/edev/temp"
Please try to burn with this command. I am curios if it works...... the wrong size-detection of vobcopy sounds not too good.

Thank you for your help improving Pburn.

genisoimage: Unable to make a DVD-Video image.
Possible reasons:
- VIDEO_TS subdirectory was not found on specified location
- VIDEO_TS has invalid contents
:-( write failed: Input/output error

I also tried the command from a terminal window with the same result.

The disk plays normally in gxine, I was able to make a copy by using Imgburn to read the disk to an ISO file and then burn the ISO file with Pburn.

During this testing I have killed/crashed/aborted Pburn many times and now it insists before every burn that the 'Inserted disk is not blank or writeable...' The disk is fresh from the packet and DISKINFO correctly reports the disk is blank, I just use the continue option. Has some saved flag been corrupted that is not correctly initialised at start up ?

I don't have the answer why Pburn doesn't accept your video_ts. sorry about that. Could it be that the disc is not encrypted, and vobcopy troubles because of that (just a silly thought).

But regarding the message-trouble, you could remove /root/.pburn/ to reset all settings.

It was a .avi, but I dont have the log... I'm guessing it was my cheap DVDs most likely, I wouldnt worry about it!

I never stopped to say thanks for Pburn, which I use more often now, and really like it, it rocks!
Good job :)

What is the correct way to save and open a playlist?

If I save a .pbn file, I am unable to open it. Neither "Open" nor "Import playlist" seem to do anything at all.

Not a silly thought - the problem disk was a publically funded production with no need of encryption. I tested another promotional DVD (353Mb total size) and that failed the same way with a 141Gb space requirement. Detecting this circumstance and a more graceful exit would be helpful, better still would be some alternate code to handle the case.
But regarding the message-trouble, you could remove /root/.pburn/ to reset all settings.
That made no difference - I also tried reinstalling Pburn - no difference so far.

What version of Pburn are you running? Changelog tells that both 3.2.7 and 3.2.3 fix 'open file bugs'

I wonder.......Does it work to just copy the files from the DVD onto the harddrive, and then burn. If it does, I could make an option to skip decryption....... Strange enough, this error hasn't been reported before. I THINK Pburn must handle not encrypted video-DVDs in general..... Has anyone any experience?

When Pburn does a copy/shrink on a DVD is the copy encrypted ? I thought not and since pburn can copy its own disks I am not sure encryption is the issue. More likely the authoring software (apple in this case) has left a marginal incompatibility, but no clue as to what.
I am out of answers - You have a fresh Pburn install, and it still doesn't work? Any terminal output (execute 'pburn' in terminal)
I tried this on another computer (acer aspire 3618, full install Official 431, Pburn 331) and it behaved the same way so it is nothing I have done. All attempts to burn a video mode, ISO mode or data mode DVD get the incorrect warning that the disk is not blank. The warning does not occur with the 'Copy/Shrink DVD' Option. The burn will proceed if I ignore the warning and use the 'Proceed with valid disk' option. Burning of CD's does not get the incorrect warning. The terminal screen shows no relevant messages.

edit - added debug options

prolems with CD blanking, iso verification in 3.3.1

#1380 Post by otropogo »

Have just upgraded to 3.3.1 and ran into trouble on two fronts:

1. I fast blanked a CD-RW with pburn and then burned the Wary_500.iso to it. When the burn completed, I got no option to verify it.

2. I then ran disk verify and pburn reported several K of errors

3. I then ran "blank complete disk", and pburn reported it couldn't do it.

4. I then ran fast blank, and it completed without complaint

5. I then ran complete blank a second time, and it completed in 9 minutes and reported no problems

Aside from the obvious delay and frustration above, it bothered me that there was absolutely no progress indication on either of the complete blanking processes. In fact, I came within a hair of aborting the second (successful) operation because it looked exactly like the previous failed one until it announced success.

6. although I selected a speed of 4X for CD burning prior to the blanking operation, AND although pburn itself reported min-max burn speed capability of 4-10, the burn window showed a burn speed of ten on the blanking operations.

I finally burned the iso with burniso2cd, because I wanted to be able to verify it. The burn went without a hitch, I was offered and accepted verification, and the verification passed (I'm posting this off my first boot with Wary).

No time for more now. Will dig up and post the burn logs later if requested (and if I can find them - it seems to me that pburn insists on writing them to /root/pburn.log no matter how many times I tell it otherwise. I wish I could set the log to write to a folder of my choice with a unique id (so I don't have to waste time editing the path and filename all the time).
