No joy, pfix-nox made no difference, the blank screen was unresponsive.
Did you put the pfix=nox into the boot parameters in grub--the ones you listed?

Or, make a Cd and boot with that and at the beginning when it asks for parameters enter 'puppy pfix=nox'

Re hyphen or underscore

It was Barry who moved from underscore to hyphen sometime around 4.3.1 (? maybe before that). This caused a bit of a problem with any iso busting tools that did not take account of the CD format being used. A simple file rename would solve it.

I cannot remember when but Barry moved back to underscore again recently because of the problems. Presumably this is why underscore now appears with luci_238.

Barry has been doing a lot of things to woof recently and reversing some things he did previously.
Please anyone help me out here with some explanation.

The underscore is a problem for windows users booting from a usb stick. Do I have that correct--so I can report to Barry. Thank you.
Hi Playdayz,

No, the user who had a problem with booting from a usb stick, Gabe, noticed an underscore in the name and being used to a hyphen surmised this might be the cause.

I made the comment above just to outline the history of the hyphen/underscore feature and that underscore is probably OK now. For reference, Barry mentioned moving back to underscore in his blog here:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01812

In an earlier post Shinobar referenced what is probably the real cause of the problem. Unetbootin, which had been used to copy the files had created a boot entry with pmedia=cd, because it copied the isolinux.cfg from the cd. In the latest version of woof this does not work when trying to boot from USB (seems reasonable to me). Shinobar suggested changing to pmedia=usbflash and found it worked for him.

I don't think there is anything to report to Barry re the underscore.

Re: international version mtpaint 3.34.57

#1523 Post by shinobar »

Thanks don. The rebuild mtpaint seems work with NLS.
But the PET has mistaken directory and fails to install.
By the way, isn't the name of the pet better to be 'mtpaint-2.24.57-lucid1' or something rather than 'mtpaint-intl-'? Only my thought.

Something not quite right with Pidgin. When you click a web link from within chat,it opens up the 'Browser installer'.

Use the browser-default to make Opera the default browser. The pet (which I made) does not do that, unfortunately.

browser-default is the globe next to the menu button in the lower left.
Playdayz

Thanks,problem solved :)
I have fixed the Opera pet http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

Thanks for testing Pidgin, btw.

As woof develops the underlying scripts change, so a system based on woof as at November 2010 may be different to that based on woof at October 2010.
Yes, as ICPUG says. That's why I am crazy! ;-)

Got it about the underscore too ICPUG. Thanks.

What has changed in that regard that luci would be more problematic to boot compared to lupu?
Some versions of luci might have had a problem with being too large to load into ram successfully. That has been fixed with luci-239.

Hm, ignore my post earlier about my graphics card giving me trouble. I don't think the graphics card is the issue. The same random X dropout can be observed with the vesa driver. Suddenly while browsing or something, it drops to commandline (xorg apparently dies).

This is a full install of 239. I have 256MB RAM and a 1024MB swap partition (set up later with gparted).

Back to the video stuff.

I received the video test pack. I was able to observe washing on xvid/divx videos (due to the post-processing) but all were very low resolution and bitrate (400kbps) so none choked the player. However, the same aliasing and gaggies (comb artifacts) can be seen in scenes of high-speed horizontal motion or scenes in which an object jumps from one position to a higher one -- there is a brief moment wherein the combs do appear. It's subtle, but quite obvious to me. The proof is in the pudding -- again, disabling the post-processing and interlacing fixed the display issue. The slow speed issue is much more apparent running high resolution / high bitrate modern clips (not those from 2005!) on netbook (or lower-spec) hardware. The interlacing specifically makes such a profound difference that the difference between leaving it erroneously enabled (again, it SHOULD NOT be enabled by default; and to a lesser extent neither should post-processing) was the difference between playing smoothly and playing AT ALL (it would freeze on one frame in gnome-mplayer).

The "fix" for both playback issues turns out to be ridiculously simple and patently obvious: disable the two default options that both create incorrect output and slow down playback exponentially.

Luci 239
from live CD
initial boot up
no save file;

1. Quickpet>news>Lucid Puppy News
Midori browser starts up with the news page and no warning about Midori being a basic browser. You know the problems that can cause.
If you go to desktop>browser icon and select midori from the list, then run midori, you get the warning.

2. Quickpet>drivers> click here to test graphics card
I have a Nvidia graphics card and it suggests Xorg-high for driver.

3.Quickpet>drivers>Nvidia drivers
Installed driver from the list and a info message displayed telling me to run Xorgwizard to set up driver for use.
I suggest changing this info to recommend doing the test after selecting the resolution setting.
Using xorgwizard;
Why test?
The test is recommended in Red warning message in the info on the resolution selection window.
It will give you following info after test is run;
Resolution setting
refresh rate
video driver that was selected and is in use.
It will give you the option to change refresh rate. (only place to do this in xorgwizard)
If probe picks the wrong driver you get the option to correct.

luci239 report

#1535 Post by scsijon »

sorry playdayz,

last version tested was 236 which was ok on sat box 1, nogo on dialup box2 (modem only).

239 fails on both with video, probe and select (intel 915(sat) and radeon (dialup)); start firewall on both (sanity check, could not find filter table); modem (agere winmodem); ethernet (10base1000).

will add details tomorrow as have just 16meg of sat left.

The Quickpet>drivers>click here to test your graphics card has always recommended xorg_high driver instead of Nvidia driver.

Luci 239
frugal install
save file

used Grub4dos to set up boot loader. Found all other operating systems and setup with proper entries in menu.lst. No manual input from me. Works great.

In Menu>system
You have both versions of Grub bootloader config.
Grub bootloader config
Grub4dos bootloader config

If Grub4dos is working so well do you need to have Grub bootloader config?

Lucid Puppy 5.2 Base Luci-239 New Version NOV 25

#1540 Post by Billtoo »

I tried another method of installing 239.
I booted the live cd with pfix=ram and when it booted up I burned the
239.iso to a multisession dvd in pburn.
Next boot I booted from the multisession dvd with pfix=ram and added
the ati driver from quickpet and installed a few pets, then rebooted
and saved to the dvd.
I've done a few reboots and each time there is another folder it loads
off the dvd during bootup.
This last time that I rebooted it loaded from 4 folders on the dvd and
it keeps promising me that the next boot will be faster :)
I always seem to have 1.6 GB of storage space when I hold the cursor
over the partview icon in the tray.
There is 3.1 gb of free space on the dvd according to partview and
I've added quit a few things.
It takes a little longer to boot up but other than that it's working
great.

Edit: I just noticed the option to not save the session, so I suppose if I
set up some directories on my hard drive to save downloads and
documents etc. I'd never need to save the session unless I go on a pet
installing binge.
