Opera 11 alpha (11.00-1104.i386) .sfs and .pet

#1 Post by Sit Heel Speak »

(note: beta package is at
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=62233
but in my opinion alpha-1055 is the one to try. Its rendering is not perfect, but it is dead stable)

(Your mileage may vary, of course. So, try all three!)

(PET package for 11.00-1104.i386, here)
(PET package for 11.00-1055.i386 (not as good of rendering, but more stable), here)

File size: 16.59MB

Same notes apply as for the 11.00-1055.i386 build, below. This build has better font rendering. I also notice that this build will render http://farmwars.info/ correctly, whereas 11.00-1055 would not. However, I am finding that 1104 is not as stable as 1055 (which I'm leaving up), so expect to participate in the development --i.e. do send in the automatic crash reports. Fortunately, 1104 does recover nicely when it crashes.

I have not added any extensions to the 1104 build. To add them go to:
https://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/

******
I have left the November 6, 2010 11.00-1055.i386 build up, with NoAds and the one-click configurator. It is very stable:

This is the November 20, 2010 development build of Opera 11 alpha,
re-packaged for Puppy Linux by yours truly from
http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/one_step ... 1.00_1104/
opera-11.00-1104.i386.linux.tar.bz2

Tested by self in Luci-237, Wary-098, Lighthouse Pup 5.00F, and a local woofbuild of Quirky using nVidia and ATi HD 4550 video cards, but it has been reported that Flash does not work under Wary using an Intel video chipset.

It starts out feeling very slow, but with an hour's use becomes very much faster. I find the speed of Opera to be very acceptable.

Screen capture, showing Opera 11 in front of Opera 10.63. New in Opera 11: Opera now supports extensions, like Firefox does. Extensions can be found at
https://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/

You can toggle between the big red Menu button and a more-usual menu bar with Alt-F11. To enable smooth scrolling, left-click

Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced ->Shortcuts -> Middle-click options
Click to choose Start Panning. I leave horizontal pan unselected
-> and then OK out.

Release notes are at
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/20 ... er-to-beta
today, though this will scroll away fast. Official disclaimer: "WARNING This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations..." et cetera.

I like Opera because it saves webpages by default in single-file .mht format, and because sometimes Opera Turbo helps with my slow connection (but sometimes Turbo Off is faster, depends on the website)..

I also very much like the way that Opera 11 does ctrl-f search.

This package is an add-on .sfs file for current versions of Puppy Linux (Lucid Puppy 5.nn and the luci series and Quirky 1.n and Wary-09n-or-5) frugal installs which have already been shut down once and have had the savefile created. It installs Opera using the suffix -11.00-1104.i386 so it is completely separate from, and will not interfere with, any existing Opera (or other browser) installation. Thus, I'm giving you the chance to try Opera 11 without disturbing your present installations of other browsers and without having to first create a backup of your savefile. Well, you should back up your savefile before trying *anything* new, but you know what I mean.

Uninstalling this .sfs, that is, telling Boot Manager to remove it from the active (right-side) pane and rebooting, will leave your present Opera (and all other browsers) intact as they were before. You may wish to, before removing the .sfs from Boot Manager, run the uninstall program which is
/usr/local/bin/uninstall-opera-11.00-1104.i386
to clear out the cache in /root/ and so forth from your savefile.

I have added Adobe Flash Player "Square" (32-bit) version 10.1 beta, it is
/usr/local/lib/opera-11.00-1104.i386/plugins/libflashplayer.so
. I have changed the first-searched plugins directory from its default location of /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to
/usr/local/lib/opera-11.00-1104.i386/plugins
, so installing or uninstalling this package will not affect your present Flash player in other browsers.

TO INSTALL: download:
http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/4de0dd0df5_16.59MB
File name: opera-11.00-1104.i386-SHS.sfs
File size: 16.59MB
Description tags: Opera 11 alpha (11.00-1104.i386) .sfs add-on for Puppy 5, packaged by Sit Heel Speak
md5sum:
# md5sum opera-11.00-1104.i386-SHS.sfs
ad80c8cf69a9bcb43776f7679a00c3d5 opera-11.00-1104.i386-SHS.sfs

into either /mnt/home or into the subdirectory where you have Puppy, then
left-click Menu ->
System ->
Boot Manager configure startup ->
Choose which extra SFS files to load at bootup,
select (click to highlight) it in the left pane,
Add it to the right pane,
close out Boot Manager,
and reboot.

Opera will now be in your menu under Internet. Widgets Manager is under Setup.

Technical notes:

I moved the menu files (Opera-11.00-1104.i386.desktop et cetera) from
/usr/local/share/applications up to /usr/share/applications, so they are grouped with all the other common menu .desktop files.

I added one script in /root/Startup, Clean_Up_Opera_11.00-1104.i386_and_gFTP_and_KDE_wh_files, to prevent the savefile from growing too large. For explanation see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29707. I am not sure if performing these cleanups at the start of X, by placing the script in /root/Startup, is a good idea or not. Advice is welcome.

I have not implemented any of the safeguards against evercookies, presently being discussed at
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60935.

Thanks for the links!

I have a problem with a horrible, small font appearing in this browser, similar to the nasty font we used to get with Firefox in Puppy.

This same problem does *not* occur with my normal version of Opera, downloaded as a pet file.
Any advice on dealing with it? I played around with the appearance options but it doesn't help much.

Well, you can increase the minimum font size by doing
ctrl-F12 -> Advanced -> Fonts
and set minimum font size to 12.

Thanks for this SHS... giving it a try. Traditionally I have liked Opera but had problems with some sites with Flash. Hopefully this one will be better. To be fair, Seamonkey can be problematic with some Flash stuff too....

Can't remember whether it was Billtoo or ???, advised that the 'other deb' versions of Opera install directly by choosing 'Open'. This works every time - no need for a .pet. So, in for a penny, did a direct load of Opera11. Worked first attempt. What I can say is that the pundits are correct - it may be an alpha, the Opera guys' warnings noted, but this thing is so good, once tried you'll never ever change it. Do it today!

Do you have it only in .sfs format, or do you/can you have it in .pet as well?

PET package for Opera 11 alpha (11.00-1104.i386)
(notes, same as for the .sfs in the first post of this thread)

(I'm finding that, while 1104 has better rendering, 1055 (next post) is more stable)

Download:
http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/dc7f4d8143_16.59MB
File name: opera_eleven_alpha_SHS-11.0.4_1.pet

You can safely delete the _1 part from the end if you want. The only reason it's there is, a snowstorm here today. The web is intermittent, and went out during the first attempt to upload it, at the exact moment between "100% uploaded" and when myfreefilehosting would show me what the download link is. So that upload is lost. And so I had to upload it a second time, and myfreefilehosting automatically appends the "_1" in such a case.

If you choose to uninstall the PET using Puppy Package Manager, you should still run
/usr/local/bin/uninstall-opera-11.00-1104.i386
first, to clear the cache out of your savefile.

I will have a PET of 11.00-1055 up, in a few hours, snowstorm allowing.

Opera 11.00b1

#11 Post by drblock2 »

I downloaded Opera 11.00b1 (a beta release for linux) from http://www.opera.com/browser/next/, unpacked it to a separate directory and then wrote a simple launch script. You will, of course, have to adapt this script to your path: <path>opera:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

# Script to launch Opera 11 stand alone from directory

exec /mnt/home/Opera-11/opera-11.00-1111.i386.linux/opera

I then simply copied the most important configuration files from /root/.opera, my current Opera 10.61 installation, to the Opera profile directory. i.e., bookmarks.adr, global_history.dat, notes.adr, operaprefs.ini, search.ini, speeddial.ini - and voilà a brand new, blindingly fast and (so far) extremely stable Opera.

The stand alone directory takes up about 31.5 MB (twice the size of an sfs file). I was able to create an sfs-file with dir2sfs, but not mount it successfully under Luci-238. (Almost certainly my problem rather than Luci's).
