Just returned to puppy after a few days away again and found more advancement. :D

I loaded the new version and noticed a few changes straightaway.

I saw reports of firewallstate not showing the firewall as active on reboot. It did this for me as well in my copy.

I suspect that the firewall is 'on' but the startup script order has changed or a minor startup change that causes firewallstate to report incorrectly.
I don't have much time available right now but will look into it.

=====

I had some photos I wanted to print via mtpaint and try as I might all that happened when I pressed print was a return to the program. No print activity , nothing. Is this a reported bug that's known ?

I have uploaded something *highly* experimental: it is a 60 MB PET package which supplies nothing more, and nothing less, than exactly those files and symlinks which exist in Macpup-511 but not in Lucid-511...and those which are newer in Macpup than in Lucid.

*In theory...* this PET should transform an existing Lucid into Macpup without losing user customizations. As for how you get your menu items into Enlightenment, well, God help you, I am not an Enlightenment guy, just a Clipper programmer. As they say at Boeing, let's send it up and see how it crashes. It is almost 3 AM here and I have not tested it.

I refer to the previous post to say that the icons have reappeared when I changed the color depth from 16 to 24 bits in xorg.conf but all the other problems remain. (XPLNS not working yet)
2 questions

1) Is this downloading behaviour the same from every mirror? (Particular mainly to sfs_grab. Barry is, as we speak, improving the downloading for PPM. I believe Quickpet has set the bench mark)

2)What type of internet connection do you have?

Cheers

EDIT
eeepuppy -please try this patch. It incorporates Barry's new 'download_file' script.

Cheers

EDIT 2

Note: this is not the latest version of Barry's script, the latest will be in the nest woof. ftp mirrors will not work, but Barry has fixed this in the next version.

EDIT 3

I have made minor adjustments to sfs_grab so that when the new woof comes out it will take advantage of the new download_file script if installed or else just uses wget. This is in the latest quickpet, not implemented in this patch. The patch is for testing only. It works in all my testing, full or frugal.
I installed the patch and I rebooted the computer, but unfortunately
I have seen no improvement.
Are connected to the internet with a ADSL modem router.
I tried downloading from several mirrors to no avail.
Qickpet works perfectly except SFS-GRAB.

Thanks for the screenshot... I think I know the solution

Does anyone remember the initial testing of quickpet when aarf had a problem with ipv4 and ipv6? I think that's what we are seeing here, and I bet it has been going on for awhile with PPM, just unreported. Some work needs to be done!

What works for me:
Install gtklp-1.2.5. from ppm and change in mtpaint: File ->Actions-> Configure-> Print image from "kprinter %f" to "gtklp %f".

Bingo! Thanks for the suggestion.
My modem router has a DMZ
(Demilitarized Zone) which allowed me to
by-pass the router and be connected directly to the Internet.
I did the test and now everything works perfectly.
It is not the best solution because I have to force an IP
static to the computer instead of having one assigned
from the router.
Thanks a lot

Luci-238 is available for testing in the first message of this thread. The rest follows.

***new mtpaint 3.34.57 by don570
***what about pidgin logon?
***XineDVD
***if you want cpu scaling, you must activate it yourself Menu -> System Status -> CPU Frequency scaling tool (by tazoc)
***do you notice decline in video quality using mplayer--the i686 ffmpeg libraries have been removed so everyone will use the i386 libraries--the i686 libraries will be available to add back in
***The ATI Catalyst driver for Radeon HD 2400-5900 (only) cards is added to Quickpet: Drivers (by 01micko)

The addition of XineDVD is a continuation of our effort to have full-featured programs for each major task. Sylpheed 3.10 and Pidgin 2.7.2 are other examples. XineDVD is 2.3MB and we compensated by removing the i686 video libraries

Frugal fresh install to hdd. First run setup works fine. Wireless connection ok. Cups printer setup and wireless printer ok. PPM installing ok.
Pwidgets still 2.2.7 in PPM. When adding weather or weather station, the browser dialog is still spanish, but menu > setup > quickpet is now english.

Testing DVD playing. With XineDVD i got as far as selecting language then it stopped, couldnt get it playing DVD. Gnome-mplayer and VLC from repo worked fine.
Pidgin ok. Installed PupClockset pet, i think it should be added to next luci.
Alsaconf works ok and sound plays fine. Audio was muted for me though.

Not saved so cant test if luci238 autoconnects on the next boot. Is BK`s fix implemented ?

So far so good. Nothing extraordinal happened in quick test :). Does not levitate but 99 % functional.
Good work and thanks to the developer team !!!

Is the new LuPu still in need of a wallpaper/choices for wallpapers?
I have nothing to do. I'll gladly make one to help out the community! :)

I'll test it in a little while. I don't have the time to download the .iso today, but I will tomorrow. :)

Lucid Puppy 5.2 Base Luci-238 New Version NOV 20

#1154 Post by Billtoo »

I have 238 installed to an 8gb SDHC card which is formatted to ext4.
I installed it to the card with the universal installer and installed
the bootloader with grub4dos.
I installed the luci_devx_238.sfs and kernel_src_L4-2.6.33.2-patched.sfs
files and then installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.21.run driver
file for my Nvidia Geforce 286 GT card.
I've installed a couple of pets and compiled Deadbeef-0.4.4 and
mrxvt-0.5.4.
The dvd player seems to be working well, will go full screen and back
and I also downloaded a new skin for the ui.
Lots more to do but that's it so far.

Advice: Disable automatic thumbnail previews by default in rox - it slows down filer and if you have directory with many photos or images it will create many thunmbnails in /root/.thumbnails and it is one of possible RAM leachers when running in RAM.

Frugal installation with all my normal applications was flawless. Luci 238 looks solid. XineDVD player is great, it needs to be made the default media player.

Weird problem with trying to upgrade a full HD installation of Luci 237. This installation was originally 236, then upgraded from 236 to 237 without problem. Now with the upgrade to 238, my CD/DVD drive is not seen. Also Optical Drive Wizard does not work, when trying to choose the CD or DVD, it just brings up an Usage for Xdialog script. Other software appears to be working correctly.

The following extra applications are installed on both frugal and full HD installations:

I usually don't bother with full HD installations of puppy, and only did so to test Quickpet's added capabilities. Additional testing needs to be done on full HD installations and upgrades.

Cheers,
Jim

Fresh manual frugal install of Luci-238 on the old P3 test box.Everything working as expected.......working sound, internet and correct resolution on initial boot....only had to set the time zone. All settings persistent over a couple of reboots.
Only installed Xorg_High, Firefox 4.0 b7 and VLC so far and everything is working.XineDVD is fine...no problems with menus, fullscreen and nice smooth playback......even on this old P3.

Jim, how did you manage to get all that stuff installed so shortly after the release hour? Impressive!

That must be a new world record :)

PS. The font storage seems to be the old one. Not yet those additions playdayz were speculating earlier in the thread.

After making savefile and rebooting xineDVD started to play DVD nicely !

Correct pemasu. Those should come in the next version of Woof, which I think Barry will release right after Wary 1.0.
