upgrading the kernel module Subject description: for some new wacom products |

tempestuous wrote: | Sure, the existing wacom kernel module should work fine with the upgraded wacom Xorg plugin, but users should consider upgrading the kernel module as well, since this was provided by the wacom developers as part of the 0.10.8 driver package. |
Yes, some new wacom products are supported by the upgraded kernel module.

newest driver from tempestuous |
|
I tried the newest driver from tempestuous(page12) with luci238
and it worked better than the driver from Charlie6 (page10) in that it
worked properly with the mtpaint tablet preferences. It will now
support the the 'correct' standard way of setting all tools to 'Screen'

keep wacom driver loaded |
|
Thank to a suggestion from Shinobar, I found
that it's easy to make the wacom driver automatically load
when rebooting.
I put
at the end of /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG
and that did the trick.
Boot manager wasn't much help since it only listed
wacom_w8001 which is the driver for a touchscreen.
That's not what I have.

I'm running Puppy 4.3.1JP Retro (kernel 2.6.21.7), and I've decided I might as well try to get my Graphire3 tablet running with it. (at least, I think it's a Graphire3... it's model CTE-430 (pearl).) Will any of the 2.6.21.7 .pets from the first page work, or should I look for something specifically compiled for 4.3.1 and kernel 2.6.21.7?
I think I plugged it in under Puppy 4.2.1 (Retro) and the wireless mouse part of the tablet did work... but it doesn't under 4.3.1.

which driver? |
|
Wary 098 and more recent
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1196221651&t=62891
have the wacom driver built-in which is convenient.
However you want a distribution that is Japanese.
LupQ can be converted to Japanese with a language pack
http://shino.pos.to/linux/lupq/features.html
To answer your question Puppy 4.3.1 uses the drivers on the first page,
but try Barry Kauler's driver as well since it was made only a couple of weeks ago.

None of the Puppy 5 packages (drivers) would be compiled against the 2.6.21.7 kernel, though, would they?
I'll try the pets on the first page... or I will, if I can get some free time to sit down and experiment. (Bleah.)

If you're frightened to install a driver in an installation
that is already working perfectly then boot up with the option
pfix=ram
You can write the option in your menu.lst file.
Here are some sample entries that were written for Lighthouse 5g
http://www.lhpup.org/misc/GRUB/SampleMenu.lstEntries
Note that you just need to restart X to feel the difference in the stylus.
There is no need to reboot the computer.
Barry's driver definitely works for the regular Puppy 4.31 but
you'll have to test for the retro version.

I'm okay with it (installing drivers I'm not completely sure about). I usually backup my pupsave first, though.
I thought none of the Puppy 5 versions used any of the Retro kernels, so I didn't think a driver package compiled for use in 5 would necessarily work for my Retro version.

Oops, my Puppy 4.1/4.2 kernel source configuration was corrupt.
I have just corrected the error, and repackaged the wacom driver package for Puppy 4.1/4.2.
Would the 3 people who already downloaded this dotpet please download again.

linuxwacom-0.8.8-10-k2.6.31.14-w5.pet |
|
Compiled linuxwacom-0.8.8-10 against Wary-500.
The pet including the X-driver and the kernel module, linuxwacom-0.8.8-10-k2.6.31.14-w5.pet is available here.
It supports recent models of wacom tablets.
Links to the on-line documents are available at /usr/share/doc/wacom/index.html.
Type 'man wacom' on the virtual terminal.

Hi nuttypup, welcome to puppy !
Asuming you have a wacom tablet ...and your are new to linux ...(I apologize if not , oops!)
1. A first and immediate solution to use the stylus is to open a terminal (or console), and to type
Code: |
#depmod <<<< here push Enter key
#modprobe wacom <<<< here push Enter key
# <<<< here you will maybe get
some comments like 'deprecated
...blablibla' do not take account of them
|
afterward restart Xserver (do Menu/session/you will find restart X server among the proposed actions).
When the display is restarted, the stylus behaves like a mouse (with the difference that the cursor's arrow go back to one corner of the screen each time you lift the stylus from the tablet...! that may bring some fatigue to your wrist ..!)
2. The complete solution (if you want more to your tablet ...)
- you will have to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and add lines requested by the xorg driver to know what to do with the tablet.
- please read carefully the first pages of this thread about xorg.conf editing; before editing xorg.conf it is recommended to make a copy of the current xorg.conf file (copy it under for instance xorg.conforigin or whatever name you want in case you would get back to the original)
- the wacom drivers for Lucid are the two pet file given in forum member Tempestuous at the en of page 12 this thread - post related to Puppy5.1.x.
Hope this would help you !
Have fun with Puppy
Cheers, Charlie
