Can one install KEEPASS and DROPBOX on Puppy-Lucid??

#1 Post by wildsage2 »

First some praise: Puppy has turned my old dog Toshiba laptop (formerly with Windows ME and thus useless) into a blazing modern greyhound!!! Kudos to the programmers!! :D

Question 1: I have several computers and various operating systems, and have found KEEPASS an excellent password manager which works on all of my other OSs and is therefore easy to sync. Is it possible to install on Puppy-Lucid and if so how? Or is there any plan to make it an available "Pet".

Question 2: I have the parallel question concerning DROPBOX which has proven very useful to me across my various systems.

Many thanks for any advice.

I run Password Safe (Windows) and Password Gorilla (available for Windows and Linux, and perhaps Mac) -- which both use the same encrypted password safe format.

Acerose Password Vault V1.02

I've used almost always the portable version of the above for years now [it can be installed if you prefer]; got from that site.
I run the portable version under WINE within many different Puppies, and also within Win2000Pro.

BRILLIANT program. :)

Hi,

Dropbox can be found at http://portablelinuxapps.org/
third column, near the bottom.

Many, but not all, of those apps work perfectly. So please let us know how it goes.

My regards

thanks for alternative programs, but.....

#5 Post by wildsage2 »

I'll check out the Dropbox suggestion, thank you.

As for password management, I realize that there are a number of equally good choices, but I am seeking the specific program Keepass as I can share the database across my several computers. I have it installed on my large IMac, and on my tiny Asus (running Ubuntu Netbook Remix), a Macbook, and would like to share with my reborn Toshiba running Puppy 5.1.

Any thoughts? :?:

If you are/can running/use Wine....the portable version of Keepass works in both Windows and Wine in many puppies.

Keepass/ Dropbox/ Wine or Crossover

#8 Post by wildsage2 »

I've loaded Keepass and its three dependencies from the Ubuntu Lucid Main via Puppy Installer. This is the version I use on my Ubuntu computer, and I use the Mac version on my Mac. I'll test it to see if it is okay. It should be. :?

Alas I haven't found Dropbox in the Puppy compatible Ubuntu Lucid Main, and wonder if it is possible to use. It does require Nautilus, which is also not in the Pet compatible menu. :(

While I can manually transfer databases (presuming the Keepass works), it would really be lovely to have Dropbox as I do on the other computers, as then it is all automated sync. :)

Thoughts? I know it is listed on the Cross-platform page. There is also the possibility of using Wine and a Windows install. Actually I am a tester for CrossOver, the commercial fancy version of Wine. I have it installed on my Ubuntu computer. Has anyone tried it on Puppy Lucid?

Thanks for all the wisdom out there. 8)

Hi again,

I just downloaded Dropbox from the source I gave above and it works in Lucid Puppy 5.1.

My apology - it is in the first column not the third column - (DosBox is in the same row in the third column and I carelessly used that reference).

Download it and place it anywhere you like then left click on it and look in your tray for the blue icon. If it does not work just right click then click Permissions, then click Yes.
Then go back and left click and tell us if it works for you.

My regards

Sir Jasper the wizard of Dropbox

#10 Post by wildsage2 »

After just having confirmed that my Keepass worked by opening a previously saved database taken from Dropbox on another system, ..... behold, I received this most auspicious message from you. I corrected the permission, and as I already have an account, I entered those cryptic details, and there before me is the little blue box, which prompt added the green arrow to declare itself synced. Oh wonder of wonders.

Bless you. As I am using different browsers on all three machines, I really need this database or I'll lose my mind. Thank you so very much. :D

Hi,

Pleased you have won. You can enter any solution you wish in your own words in that section.

Just out of general interest would you kindly explain, in a bit more detail, how you got KeePass to work.

.pet for KeepassX already exists!

#14 Post by Puppeteer »

Hi. I'm running Lucid 5.2.

I'd like to point out that installing the .pet that Muggins made worked for me: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 09&t=37198

You need to install QT4 as well: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -4.3.2.pet

This is the .pet for KeepassX (Muggins updates it as new versions are released):

Code: Select all

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=27665
The current .pet (v. 0.4.3 March 2010) has worked for me on both Lucid 5.1 and 5.2. So no need to convert a .deb if you're having a hard time getting it to work and you haven't tried Muggins' .pet, methinks  ...
