How to get AMSN and WINE to work in Puppy 4?

I have been using a version 4 derivative (full install) for over a month now and am seemingly familiar with it.

I just was wondering if someone can give me help in regards to getting a version of AMSN to work and also Wine.

Instructions from start to finish, including where to download and installation steps would be great.

So far I have been unsuccessful with what I have downloaded and tried to install.

If there were versions in package manager that would be great, but there aren't.

All help appreciated.

You haven't said exactly which Puplet you are running, so what I'm saying is how I would do things in Puppy 431 Retro (Frugal Install)

SOUND
To get the sound working I would click on:
Menu > Setup > ALSA Sound Wizard
Then try setting up the Sound Cards one at a time, starting with the top of the list and working down.

WINE
I always use a Wine SFS compiled by Forum User green_dome. In Puppy 431 Retro the latest one I can use is Wine 1.3.0 which can be downloaded from here:

You will also need to download the DEV file from here:

To make Wine 1.3.0 work you will also need to download Gecko from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/wine/fi ... b/download

The idea is to copy the Wine SFS file into your /mnt/home directory and then click on:
Menu > System > BootManager

The Wine SFS file must be moved from the Left Column into the Right Column. Then you click OK and exit the BootManager. Then reboot the computer and the Wine SFS will be activated.

But before you can use it you will have to navigate to this directory:
/usr/share/wine
and create a new subdirectory called
/usr/share/wine/gecko

You then copy the file wine_gecko-1.0.0-x86.cab into /usr/share/wine/gecko

Then click on the file wine_DEV-1.3.0-i486.pet to install it and you are ready to use Wine.

To run Wine you open a Terminal window and type winefile

I did the ALSA wizard.

If the first two options deliver sound through the speakers, the second two do not.

The sound is still distorted though and not clear. Maybe my soundcard is broken or overloaded or something.

Thanks for the tips on WINE. When it is all downloaded I will tell you how I went.

I just realised you have a Full Install. So instead of the SFS file you will need the Wine 1.3.0 PET file from here:

What I said about the DEV file and Gecko still applies though.

I copied the .sfs file to the mnt/home directory.

The boot manager does not want to recognise it. It says there are none in the directory or they are of the wrong type.

The pet file failed to install.

Not to worry, I guess I will just work without it.

The Wine PET file I was talking about is this one:

If you download and click on it from within Puppy, it should install to your computer. Then you'd install the DEV file and Gecko as I explained previously. If Wine won't install it indicates you have other problems. One of the hardest things is working out which version of Puppy is compatible with a given computer.

If you have a working CD or DVD drive the best thing is to download a few different versions of Puppy, check the D/Ls with md5sum, burn each to a CD, then try booting from CD until you find the one that works best on your PC. After using it for a while this way, you might decide to install it to a USB Stick or HDD.

I've found these Puppies work on a wide ranges of PCs:

I got wine to work.

I just downloaded the link you told me to, auto installed it and then it did the gecko install all on its' own.

Now that you have Wine working there is a Windows portable version of aMSN available from:

http://portableapps.com/

It is likely to work, but if it does not or if you want to search for a linux version try googling amsn.
