While attempting to configure sound using the alsa wizard, a warning message on a yellow background appears (too fast to read fully) saying something about depmod-full.

There is also a warning about sound in the initial boot console text output.
tronkel, the warning message on the yellow background is normal, and the boot message is a harmless (seemingly) bug about modprobe.conf being deprecated, it occurs for some modems too, if they are detected.

Did 2 things with the sound problem.
Renamed the depmod symlink in /sbin to xdepmod. (i.e. disable it). then renamed depmod-FULL to depmod.

Then installed retrovol from the PPM. Started retrovol and noticed one of the capture channels was unchecked.

Microphone now works.

Alsamixer seems to be buggy therefore?

edit: renamed depmod back to depmod-FULL and restored the symlink to depmod as was the default. Sound is still OK, so the problem is somewhere in alsamixer.

Wary90 on XO-1

#23 Post by mavrothal »

I have wary90 running on the OLPC XO-1 and almost everything looks OK including sound!
All I had to do is provide a proper (OLPC-based) kernel and modify a bit xorgwizard to include the XO-1's resolution (1200x900)

However,
original wary failed to find the puppy files because could not determine the boot device (an etx3 formatted USB stick).
Defining "PDEV1=sda1" at boot solved this issue and booted fine but on exit failed to save the session. eg offer the option to save the session!
Further defining consecutively DEV1FS, PMEDIA and PSAVEMARK still failed to offer the save session option at shudown.
The Pupstate at the end looked like this

Code: Select all

PUPMODE=5
PDEV1='sda1'
DEV1FS='ext3'
PUPSFS='sda1,ext2,/wary_090.sfs'
PUPSAVE=''
PMEDIA='usbhd' #or usbflash
#kernel with libata pata has both sata and pata drives in ATADRIVES...
ATADRIVES=''
#these directories are unionfs/aufs layers in /initrd...
SAVE_LAYER=''
PUP_LAYER='/pup_ro2'
#The partition that has the warysave file is mounted here...
PUP_HOME=''
#(in /initrd) ...note, /mnt/home is a link to it.
#this file has extra kernel drivers and firmware...
ZDRV=''
#complete set of modules in the initrd (moved to main f.s.)...
ZDRVINIT='yes'
#Partition no. override on boot drive to which session is (or will be) saved...
PSAVEMARK='sda1'  # '1' fixes it see edit
but no cigar.

I'm assuming this is due to the changes in initrd/init and rc.shutdown that are now more flexible in puppyfile location but I can't see how :?

I understand that this is not really wary90, but I would appreciate any suggestions

EDIT: boot argument "PSAVEMARK=1" worked :D
But should be some way to automate this....

EDIT2: In the working setting it still takes a good 2 minutes (!) to search for the files at boot in a 2GB stick (one etx3 and one vfat formatted) and then gives the option to load nothing (0) warysave.2fs (1) and warysave.2fs (2) thought there is only one warysave.2fs!!!

Dit anybody else tried to boot wary090 from a USB stick? Is this the expected behavior?

Seamonkey version 2.07 as supplied with Wary 0.9 had a problem with crashing. This is showing up in Wary 0.9.

This problem was solved by Mozilla in the subsequent 2.08 bug-fixed version.

So this current Seamonkey needs updating to the 2.08 version.

If you try to search for the update using the Help-> check for updates menu item, the dialog just keeps reporting that it is searching, but never finds the update. Can this be fixed for Puppy using an "update-enable" ./configure option when compiling from source?

site.I then exited to the prompt and did "sh NVIDIA-Linux-256.53.run",
it returned an error at one point "/sbin/depmod -aq invalid option"
but it gave me the option to continue which I did.
Unfortunately the driver didn't install so no accelerated graphics.
All Woof-built puppies use Busybox depmod, which has been a contentious decision.

However, the full depmod is still there, renamed to 'depmod-FULL'.

So, just rename /sbin/depmod to something else, and rename /sbin/depmod-FULL to /sbin/depmod, and the Nvidia installer will be happy.

That fixed it, the Nvidia installer worked this time and I have accelerated graphics.Nexuiz runs at 1440x900 with effects set to ultra!
Thank-you.

Download, burn, reboot. Back on line. No problems, sound and network setup without questions. Video setup straight forward.

Mainboard: ASUS P4S533 with P4 2800 Ghz 512 Mb - 32 Mb (shared video) Found my HP scanner however missed the Dynalink RTA100+ router.

Now to do a frugal on my Acer 270 :)

Well done Barry and the team.

I have successfuly compiled the nvidia-71.86.14 driver for the real old nvidia cards, such as Vantas and TNTs. I have never seen mine with such a good frame rate.(Look for a DOTpet soon)

Code: Select all

# glxgears
997 frames in 5.0 seconds = 199.400 FPS
1057 frames in 5.0 seconds = 211.400 FPS
1084 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.800 FPS
1063 frames in 5.0 seconds = 212.600 FPS
1069 frames in 5.0 seconds = 213.800 FPS
1036 frames in 5.0 seconds = 207.200 FPS
video report

Code: Select all

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Wary Puppy, version 090

product: Riva TNT Chip Rev B1

Driver used by Xorg:

Video mode used by Xorg:

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
Funny thing, after I made a savefile networking was a cinch, I have 256MB RAM and a 400MB swap, so that seems weird, now on to sound.

Later on sound... obmixer will not uncheck the mute checkbox on this hardware (old sblive vibralux), so I installed retrovol from quirky in PPM and deleted obmixer_tray from ~/Startup and all is well.

Cheers

Booted fine from CD on my:

Code: Select all

HP Compaq dc5100 SFF
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
MemTotal:        3107212 k
Xorgwizard probe goes to:

Code: Select all

VIDEO REPORT: Wary Puppy, version 090

Chip description:
 Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller

Driver used by Xorg:
intel

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution:  Depth 24  Depth: "Display"
Which defaults to 1680x1050 no matter what resolution I choose. This is the same as the Puppy4 series. (used to use xrandr to get my resolution)

Placing the i810 driver back in /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ and choosing it gives me the resolution I want 1280x1024.

So far so good. :D

I begin trying my favourite programs. Everything seems to work until I get to gnumeric. :cry:

The format-cells crash is back.

Code: Select all

# gnumeric
Segmentation fault
Not something I use a lot, but when I need it, I need it.

Also had trouble with Googleearth crashing X, both 4.3 which worked in Puppy4 and 5.1 which works in Quirky, both in SFS form.

installed mesa-6.5.2-w5.pet and 4.3 still crashed X but 5.1 froze the computer requiring manual reboot.
01micko wrote:There seems to be a bug with pfix=ram.

the blue led was on on sda5, so the live cd detected that the sfs was on the drive and loaded that. Ok, not a big pain for me.. perhaps it's a new feature?

The pupmode is definitely 5, so that suggests I'm running live. See screeny.

Cheers
Ditto, tried the pfix=ram,copy. Didn't make any difference.

Not a bad package but I must say that Quirky 120-130 work better on this machine.

Can confirm the Gnumeric crash when formatting cells.

A Lite version of OpenOffice or even better, the new LibreOffice would be a better idea IMHO. This would mean that Gnumeric could be dropped and thereby space could be saved. Same for Abiword.

lol, just noticed the same thing myself. :)

paste this in at the bottom of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "1"
EndSection

just above the #PuppyHardwareProfile=

This works for 431 and other 4 ver puppies as well. But if you already have an extensions section, you can add it there.
Damn... so simple /when you know how/ :) Thanks.

agrmodem

#33 Post by peebee »

Wary 090 K2.6.30.5 contains the old 2.1.60 versions of agrmodem & agrserial that don't work.

Richard (rerwin) has published the up-to-date 2.1.80 versions for K2.6.30.5 here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 149#456585

I've tested the agrsm-11c11040-2.1.80~20091225-k2.6.30.5.pet however these give modprobe errors with wary090 (they work ok on pup431 k2.6.30.5):

Code: Select all

Oct 10 16:39:01 puppypc user.warn kernel: agrmodem: disagrees about version of symbol snd_hda_codec_read
Oct 10 16:39:01 puppypc user.warn kernel: agrmodem: Unknown symbol snd_hda_codec_read
Oct 10 16:39:01 puppypc user.warn kernel: agrmodem: disagrees about version of symbol snd_hda_codec_write
Oct 10 16:39:01 puppypc user.warn kernel: agrmodem: Unknown symbol snd_hda_codec_write

Maybe no dbus is a poor choice? It makes it hard to add Firefox or upgrade Seamonkey.

All I did to install Firefox was install Wolf Pup's pet from
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 504#207504

Auto-updated to 3.6.10 and added the latest Flash......works fine.Nothing else added.Was expecting to have to add dbus but working fine without doing so.

My guess is dbus is included in that .pet or that Firefox is compiled in such a way as not to need it. Certainly Seamonkey 2.1b complained and would not load.

Not being a regular poster I hope nobody minds me sticking my oar in.
I just want to say that I had the same experience as a previous poster when attempting to open OO the computer froze and I had to do a hard re-boot. Very happy with everything else I've tried so far. A great addition to the puppy family-Irishrm.
